[Duelling Divas] "Lady Marmalade"

Lady Marmalade was a smash hit for LaBelle in 1975 and featured the scandalously suggestive chorus of "Voulez-vous coucher avec moi (ce soir)?". At the time of release, Patti Labelle -who handled the lead- claimed she never really understood the français, saying: "I didn't know what it was about. Nobody, I swear this is God's truth, nobody told me what I'd just sung a song about."

[Duellng Divas] "Baby, It's Cold Outside"

Since it is the season, I thought this latest addition to the Duelling Divas series should be somewhat related.

We've already had a Christmas battle [See: O Holy Night], so this time I've found a winter classic that is pertinent to the coldest season of the northern hemisphere, but isn't holiday related. A bonus of this pick is that it's been covered by such a wide range of singers, over such a large period of time, that we'll get to deal with Divas who don't usually get a look in on the blog.

Before we get to the music, here's a quick blurb from Wiki on the song:

[Review] Diva's Halloween Costume Extravaganza

Yesterday was that special time of year where one could go out dressed like whatever the F***k one wanted, and not get committed or sectioned for their efforts. Yes people, yesterday was Halloween! How spooky!

Now if you're a misery guts like me (see the gifs below to get  a sense of where I'm coming from) you would have done zilch to mark the occasion. Well that's not strictly true, I sat in watching Adams Family and Polyester (Don't ask). I was planning on changing the banner of the site to somehow mark the day, but even that proved too much for my lazy behind.

But our Divas are a more exuberant and festive bunch than yours truly, and they didn't let us down; getting into the unholy spirit in the way only rich people with too much free time on their hands can. So let's check out what our lovely ladies were serving up on the catwalk of Halloween 2012!

Jessica Simpson Vocal Range / Profile

Vocal Type: Lyric Soprano
Vocal Range: 3 Octaves 2 notes and a semitone (E3-G#6)
Whistle Register: Yes
Vocal Pluses: The midrange is smooth and slightly smoky. Depending on the placement of the voice, the chest voice can be bright and smooth- when mixed- or edgy and coarse-when it's pulled up into the throat. The lower half of the belting range- up to a C5- is where the voice finds its strongest sound; being resonate and controlled. The vibrato is stable and pleasant and smooths out any harshness in tone that poor technique may induce. Has the strength and stamina to hold notes for impressive lengths of time throughout the belting range without wavering in pitch.  The head voice is heavy with a piercing quality and fullness to it.
Vocal Negatives: Poor technique; the belting voice is often placed in the throat, making the sound produced sound like shouting in the higher extremes, and the control over the voice can be inconsistent.

Did Jessica Simpson rip off Mariah's "All I want for Christmas"?

Did Jessica Rip off Mariah?

Jessica Simpson has just released her first single from her new Christmas album "Happy Christmas" called "My only wish" and boy oh boy does it sound like Mariah Carey's "All I want for Christmas". It has the same lyrical content, the same melody and the same overall sound as Mariah's hit, with the only real change being the middle eight.
