[New Music] Sia Adds Dark Twist to "California Dreamin" Cover

The Mamas and The Papas' California Dreamin' is up there as one my favourite songs EVAH.

Hearing that Sia was going to be covering the iconic track for the movie San Andreas was thus an exciting prospect! Well the full track has hit the webz and I'm (on first listen) undecided on the result.

The opening choir, piano and the slow build of the intro is a beautiful start to this reworking. Sia also delivers some gorgeous vocals- being emotive and impressive in equal measure. However, once the strings and beat kick in, the song loses momentum for me, with the predicable production becoming overpowering. This could have been remedied if Sia's vocal had been brought to the fore, but they're lost in the sea of production as is.

Was this a conscious decision by those involved, designed to be symbolic of the victims' voices being lost in the chaos of the earthquake (that's what the film is about, if ya didn't know)? Or was the mix actually fine and my speakers are cruddy and in need of replacement. I'll leave you guys to let me know!

It's still a good cover, don't get me wrong. Just not as good as the intro hinted it would be.

Thoughts?
