I don't think I'll ever get tired of Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas. In fact, I think I could stand to hear it all year round. (Something I'm sure Mariah's publisher would also want to see happening). Still, it takes a brave Diva to cover such an iconic song.
Enter The Snow Queen herself, Idina Menzel, who recorded the Christmas classic for her seasonal LP, Holiday Wishes.
With a jazzier production than the Motown-esque original, Idina is given the room to deliver a (complimenting) vocal that is freer and less structured than Mariah's. Certain refrains from the source material are interwoven in, but Idina smartly switches octaves and flips dynamics to mitigate the amount of direct comparisons that could be drawn between the two Divas. It makes for an interesting first few listens. However, on repeated plays, it doesn't quite capture the magic of the original for me- being slightly too long post bridge.
But what did you think? Let me Know!
Thoughts?
