[Review] Taylor Swift - "Shake It Off"

What is this noise, Taylor!? Seriously, this must be a joke, or a parody of something I'm not cool enough to have seen yet. No? This is a legitimate release, you say? Oh... Ok. Let's me proceed with the review then...*sigh*

Shake It Off signifies Taylor Swift's return to music, and the first release from her October-due 'pop' LP. Perhaps preempting the negative reaction a change in genre can bring, the album's opening gambit is quick to warn those "haters" that Tay isn't going to pay your negativity any mind. That also applies to those who want to talk trash about her personal life- like her many failed relationships. So save yo breath, fools! Admirable advice, but I'm not taking it.

Now, I have no problem with the Diva changing musical direction. In fact, I think her writing skills and voice could suit the genre. What I do have a problem with is generic, weakly produced music- which she worryingly considers to have a "sick beat"- that lacks a catchy chorus, memorable melody, or an engaging bridge. All things Shake It Off is guilty of.

I know there is a market for this brand of slightly obnoxious pop music (even if Avril Lavigne's career suggests otherwise) but it's just not for me. Wrongly or rightly, I expect more from Taylor Swift. That goes for the video too, which I'm not even going to bother touching upon.

 Rating:D-
