If you've watched The Fifth Element, and are a fan of this site, then there is a part of that movie that has got to have stuck with you long after the end credits rolled. Yes, it's time to finally show Diva Plavalaguna some love and feature the The Diva Dance
The first half of this glorious performance, brilliantly acted by Maïwenn Le Besco, contains music from Gaetano Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor: "Il dolce suono". Though beautiful, this part will leave most with no interest in opera unfazed. After all, it could sound like any other opera to the uninitiated. But don't turn off, it's after the aria ends that the Diva lets loose, giving us the iconic wordless vocal that is the Diva Dance. (Try not to skip to it. The buildup is part of the fun)
Now, the range covered throughout the scene ( G#2 to F#6) isn't actually that wide, or alien, when compared to some of our Divas (it's almost exactly the same range Beyonce has demonstrated). However it's not the range alone that is impressive. Rather it's the consistency, power and control that soprano Inva Mula -who provided the voice- exhibits throughout that is something else.
Sadly this scene has never been given the live treatment by Ms.Mula. Nonetheless, that hasn't stopped some brave souls attempting to go where she hasn't and try to recreate the song live*. Check out how they fared after watching the real deal, below.
Note: To those who don't want any movie spoilers, watch the second, green screen video.
*Not all are live...lol
