Iggy Azalea and Ariana Grande Perform @ Billboard Music Awards 2014

Can't even be bothered to watch, nor review this performance of Iggy Azalea and Ariana Grande- but I'll post it since some of you guys might want to enjoy/discuss it.

Why am I being such a lazy h*ebag, you ask?

Well I feel like a broken record when it comes to Ariana and her live showings- "good, slightly awkward with dodgy annunciation". (Perhaps this performance will be different- I'm sure you guys will let me know- but I honestly just don't want to take the time to find out.) As for Iggy- if the Tweets are genuine- I just can't with her and her stupid ass right now.

Thus, the combination of the two is a definite no go for me today.

Thoughts?

  1. love the double back to back performance !. vocal review-ish

iggy: i love her but live rap aint her thing, she writes her raps without pacing meaning she runs out of breath during her bars, it always starts of slow/gets faster/slow/shouts meaning by the end she's had to stop to breathe half way through and half the words are missed.

charlie xcx: i like this girl but again didn't deliver live, iv seen her do better so i'll give her a pass.

ariana: STAY STILL WOMAN ! lol her vocals would have befitted if she calmed down the movements a little, i find her voice hard to place, because her voice hasn't got weight to it it sounds like its forever going higher without...getting higher....which isnt a bad thing, if you were to say "how you doin" like wendy willams says it and where you place the "how" in your throat feels like where ariana sings from, that made no sense ha but yeah i still think her studio vocals are amazing even though im not a fan.

iggy again: much better this time, took breaths , rap was understandable.

  2. tbh, katy perry has been a consistently poor performer, especially for someone in their late 20s whereas you have someone like dolly parton who is a consistently good performer in her late 60s....lol. (p.s. im aware katy has had some good live performance).

  3. Well, this is nothing new; once again, she exhibits the very reason as to why she is one of the worst- live performers in Popular music...

  5. I refuse to take Ariana Grande seriously when she looks like an 11 year old in Stripper aesthetics and I can't understand a word she sings below G4. On the other hand, I'm starting to like & appreciate Iggy Azealea.

Anyway, this was, without a doubt, the greatest- live performance to this grace this awards show in years. Beyonce', where art thou?

  6. Thanks Ruru but you were too nice!!!! I found this gross....

Iggy: That ass though!!!!!!!!! Loved you but yeah, learn to pace yourself and you need better intonation. I LOVE YOU!!!!!!!!!!! Don't take this to heart LOL.

Ariana: Gurl if you don't sat yo lil' 5'1 no booty, too cute to be sexy looking like bait rape ass down somewhere, we gonna have a problem. As always, intonation was just gross. Your attempts at adlibs were just gross... And you dancing...not gross but still gross!!!!!! At least you've been working on stage presence... I guess that's one positive from your performance...

Charlie Xcx: ... Kid.... I have so many negative things to say but since this is my first time watching you live I'm not gonna say it... But I can already tell...will never be a fan....NEVER!!!!!

  7. Breath management for days...Most impressive part when she was just going in on that white dude when she walked off stage than back on it LOL. And the shade at the end when they zoomed in on Michelle, Kelly and Rihanna LOL.

This performance is also wonderful.... And she has the same voice type as Ariana but is just a much better singer and a much better performer...

  10. Oh yes, I've often reveled at this performance; it was incredible. In my opinion, Janelle is "The Female Performer" of her generation thus far; she' s a Black Female artist who fuses Modern- Alternative Rock with Classicist- Soul/Rock & Roll music and I love that. Her sense artistry is awe-inspiring.

This is my favorite performance of hers though. I perpetually receive MY LIFE at the end. LOL...

  11. I love this performance, but there was a moment when I noticed that her lips weren't in sync with the voice. It was HD, too, and no audio problems. Either way, iconic performance.

  12. Ugh, she is so splendid. Especially Sincerely Jane and Sally Ride etc etc. Her first archandroid is so great.

  15. oh gurl, harsh on charlie xcx ! although i have no fandom for that child so i shall not defend her haha. DATE RAPE !? i laughed too much at that and i kinda agree, she looks 15 but she's my age. take a look at miley she went from looking like she's 12 then she done some serious gowns and high fashion looks before she went ratchet. ariana still wears stripper heels and pastel blue baggy jumpers....which she wore when performing for the president lol.

iggy done a little better here :).

  20. No you know good damn well I know about some damn hair why you're going through an identity crisis LOL. That was a joke like frfr... Dudley you got a get a shovel to get it out the damn can... I know. LOL. But nothing works better than good old fashion Nigerian hybrid shae butter mix and some natural co-washing agents like Design Essentials co-washing shampoo (it's really conditioner.) Also shampoos dry the living turds out your hair so co-washing agents are the best!!!!!

And J you ain't ever lied about them thots in Albany... Thirstier than the dry side of a camel hump... I almost got into a situation Sunday...had to cut some bitches from thy royal contact list...

And you tried to come for me about some damn hair... HAIR???? The leading premium niggaologist hair stylist here and you tried to come for me??? Like dafuuuuuuq *Gay voice*? And have you forgotten just how long my hair is and how oily this shit gets? Gotta put light stuff in my hair because it'll look like a bad jerry curl if I put too much in... This shit already wanna grow straight, niggaliciously nappy, curly and inbetween. Can't be messing up the nigga hair routine like that... You know black people hair be on the brink LOL.

Our hair already lacks enough vibrancy as it is, ain't nobody got time for that. It's even worse if you're a nigga 'cause you can't wear no damn tracks or lace fronts to cover dat shit up lol. And shae butter??? ROFL! That's some ghetto ass shit. You may as well put some damn Crisco in that bitch too lol. Once that shit dries up it be havin' your ass lookin' like Blue Ivy...all that damn money and they got that poor baby lookin' like a damn gremlin lol!

  28. Somehow her cardiovascular health is of the gods and she can probably do all of Sean T's workouts while belting.

Same voice type as Ariana tho? Ariana is such a light voice that I sometimes wonder if she's perhaps a souberette with good belting abilitly.

I mean...if people consider Mariah a light lyric......

    ReplyDelete
  29. I love the fact that she elected to wear the same green wig, like "bitch, idgaf about whether or not I jacked yo shit" in Gaga's face with similar harajuku flavor. Get that subtle shade bitch, get it.

She even has a pause in the show that has Katy Keene, with the message "Technical difficulties; please stand by".

    ReplyDelete
  30. No, she's certainly a Lyric. There's no denying it.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Yeah; a lot of haircare products focus on adding a lot of stuff like mineral oil that make out hair shinier but greasy.

I'm surprised more AAs don't know that detanglers are where it's at for our hair. I use detangler with some garnier fructis leave-in conditioner (mineral oil/heavy cream free), and it looks like I got a mild texturizer.

Adding lemon juice to detanglers makes it extra potent because the acid neutralizes static, which is what largely causes knots.

  32. YASSSS nigga nigga!!!!!!! But I gotta try that. My hair, when I keep it up, i can run my fingers through it. However, combing it...at all times is a no go.... Unless is wet.... Everyone says combing wet hair causes breakage but it doesn't with my hair... for me, washing my hair in even warm water causes breakage and dry scalp soo...LOL... and leave in conditioners are the best!!!!!!!

  35. On another note, the REAL Mariah Carey is streaming her album on iTunes Radio in a few hours.

    ReplyDelete
  36. She's serving Kids Choice Awards realness with some West Hollywood dancers. Okay. I mean you're trying your best.

    ReplyDelete
  37. She really doesn't change up her performances for this song.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I don't know why I'm always surprised that Ariana doesn't do as well as I hope. Maybe it's just that I expect so much more from someone who started their career on Broadway, or the fact that she's received praise from the Lady Marmalade herself, as well as other veteran divas. But like with most of her posts, what's done is done, and what's said is already said in the comments here.

Iggy on the other hand, first, her problematic ways extend beyond some accusations of fetishizing Japan or trying to be ratchet. Some of the shit she's said is actually like, offensive.
That aside, I do like her flow, and her style, offensive lyrics aside, she's nothing special, but I'll be damned if Fancy isn't one of the catchiest songs of the year. She didn't do terrible here, she carried herself well with swag. Not much else to say. Although her "wait I'm here now!" entrance in Problem, and the "ok well bye now" exit were pretty awkwardly executed.

I care too much for Charli XCX's performance here, I just feel like she's more of an ~*artist*~ than vocalist so I'll forgive her. (But yeah, if we're being real, she didn't do terrible, but you know, she has a voice for the studio.)

    ReplyDelete
  39. She indeed sounds like she is full of snot all the time.

This song is one of the worst she has sounded in. I really don't get the shouting parts in the song. What is she trying to pull there?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Believe me, you missed nothing. Ariana delivered a good vocal and I liked the belts, but her pronunciation and intonation are still the pits, so you're most likely not to understand a word out of what she sang.

    ReplyDelete
  41. I see Ariana is already resorting to tighter and shorter outfits and hot dancers to make up for the fact that her performances are lacklustre and her vocals are weak as cold tea...

    ReplyDelete

  45. I'm not sure what fach you are, probably a bariton. You are using "Edge" a lot, it's a technique which is very metallic. So with another technique your voice might not sound as steely. If you want to find singers who sound similar to you, check out some metal vocalists. Tony Kakko for example.

  50. I didn't understand a single word

    ReplyDelete
  51. Awful breath support. She should be banned from performing at majour award shows. Performances like this project them to be a mere farce. Professionalism has taken one large step into hell. How is incompetence of this level even legal? Oh my goodness.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Already? She's been doing that since day 1. And there's not a single off note, and her placement never slips, so I would call those pretty solid vocals. She's just literally incomprehensible.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Ariana's belting G#5s like it's nothing but breathing to her, and you're all just complaining? Nice guys...really nice...
So she doesn't pronounce words like a normal person when she sings - the same can be said of a bunch of different singers (the one I'm most familiar with is Patrick Stump of Fall Out Boy, who, back in 2005 could barely sing three comprehensible words in a row), but that's not important. It's the music, and the voice.
She's a light-lyric voice. It'll lean towards nasality naturally. Add onto that, she belts straight into the mask and her head, making the nasality even more pronounced. But at the core of the voice is a brilliant sense of pitch, great control, and excellent rhythm, as well as musicality that sometimes veers a little, but mostly stays with the music and the melody. If this is her at her worst, I'd HATE to see what other singers nowadays would be thinking.

    ReplyDelete
  54. By weak vocals I don't mean her technique, I just mean her weak voice in general.

    ReplyDelete
  55. G#5s like nothing at the expense of a neutral larynx? Ideal, huh. Let's not get into her diction because the problem is abundantly evident. Intonation? How dare you say she has brilliant sense of pitch when her intonation is constantly on the brink? She's extremely pitchy, constantly going flat. Control? As in what? Dynamics? Very limited use. Breath support? Funny because she cuts off In the middle of notes and runs. Actually, her fully controlled singing range is from C5-F#5, being generous. Barely an octave Is supported. Musicality? Excellent? I wouldn't go that far. It seems to me a pure fan is talking rather than being objective. Sometimes in middle voice she'll lower her larynx to achieve sultry tone. When she belts high (primarily above F#5) that larynx takes an incessant trip to the moon. Are you one of the many people who consider this karaoke singer great? I simply find her to be nothing more than a statistic.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Technically, her vocal delivery was weak. I certainly wouldn't call it anything on the lines of strong. Not a single off note? I noticed a lot of unsupported notes and a flat some flat ones. You may want to play it back and listen a bit more meticulously. Solidity is actually quite antonymous with her singing. Unstable is moreso complimentary than anything if you're going to take a more realistic route in examining her singing thoroughly. Just saying :)

    ReplyDelete
  57. diva i loveee that you used the term BASIC
haha katy is the epitome of basic

ill admit birthday is catchy - but i really cant believe people arent bothered with her live performances.... like seriously does it not bother you that one of the most successful pop acts right now can barely sing her own songs correctly - lets not even get started with the concept and lyrics of this song - first she sings about people feeling like plastic bags drifting through the wind and now shes trying to belt about bringing out big balloons for someone's birthday
is there really no substance anymore???
its fine to bring out big production but if you can't back it up with a good voice then theres no point

thats another thing - her visuals are just so scattered and mindless; she doesn't even try to inject any meaning whatsoever with the visuals she brings to the table.

all in all it just bothers me that people are so lazy and don't look into the music or artists they are tryin to support

    ReplyDelete
  58. this bitch is crazy lmao
    wide range?
    really good songwriter?

the fact that she works with dr luke is a sign shes basic like katy

    ReplyDelete
  59. you cant shade someone if you are far less talented than them
thats like nicki minaj shading mariah
    LMFAO

shading doesnt mean anything if you are a BASIC ASS BITCH

    ReplyDelete
  60. Well, yeah...light-lyric soprano, doesn't force her voice, she's in her early 20s...it's gonna be weak. Not a surprise.

    ReplyDelete
  61. If her larynx were raising, then the difference in tone would be far more palpable (a la Christina Aguilera - completely different voice at D5 as opposed to A4). As it stands, her tone doesn't change from around F4 to A5, so I'd say that her control of the soprano 'belting' area is pretty strong. She doesn't place the voice well...at all...but she does know how to keep a neutral larynx, because as she goes higher into the belting range, there's no decline or palpable shift in sound that is the hallmark of bad technique.

Control, as in she can do vocal runs where every note sounds like a note, and not a blur. As it is pop music, I think we can forgive a lack of dynamics, as most singers have the two - falsetto and belt.

Her use of a lowered larynx to achieve sultry tone, by the way, isn't a crime so long as it's an exception, not a rule. The thing that worries me the most about her voice is how she seems to 'thicken' the sound of her voice to achieve a 'bigger' sound, while in reality, she's reducing her resonance.

As for pitch - find a singer of today who does high-octane belting all the time and doesn't go flat every once in a while. Find a singer of ANY generation who doesn't go flat sometimes, because that was the case even with much better singers like Mariah and Whitney. Ariana's biggest pitchy area is the notes above E5 (and as all of her songs go above that, it's a problem), because she doesn't seem to reach for the notes enough, and below E4 (where, as a light-lyric, she loses confidence, and therefore, support, weakening the sound severely).

I realize very well that, as a singer, she has multiple problems, but they all stem from two "big" ones - artificial tone, and unsupported lower register. If she fixed those, all of her intonation issues would likely disappear, as well as this odd feeling that she's got to blow her nose the whole performance.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I get that, but there are other light lyric sopranos who have stronger, more resonant voices without forcing it and were like that in their 20s - Mariah, Leona, Minnie as example for starters.

    ReplyDelete
  63. she's been wearing that wig since before gaga made that comment.

    ReplyDelete
  64. I feel like these celebrity vocal coaches obviously just over exaggerate their students vocal ability.

I mean for christ sakes I saw Austin Mahones vocal coach of twitter tweeting about how he had a whistle register and could sing as high as the piano could go. It's possible but sounds like absolute bull considering his vocal ability.

    ReplyDelete
  65. "No substance" It's a fun, tongue-in-cheek song about giving her man birthday sex, what were you expecting? The song is meant to be fun. This song is meant for the dance floor and parties, not something to wrack your brain over. I mean, it's like saying a ballad isn't fun.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I agree with Seren. I underestand that you complain about "Unconditionally" not having much substance because the topic of the song is supposed to be "stop pretending you're someone you are not, I love you just the way you are" and that could give more play than the song did, but this? It's about giving birthday sex, not that you really have to be too deep for that...

    ReplyDelete
  67. I generally don't reply to comments of this nature...I just sit back and be like, "oh that's good!! Someone's voicing their opinion," but dayum... What the fuck, did you literally think this song was about a birthday? I mean it is about someone's birthday but seriously, kid? I'm not being mean I'm just legit amazed like...fuhreal doe??? I ain't trying to be condescending and rude, I'm just like...shit fuhreal doe???????? Like mystepdad always says #Gotstobemorecareful

    ReplyDelete
  68. Austin Mahone is the most mediocre singer to come onto the music scene within the last few years. It's actually astonishing how weak his voice is and he still gets a recording contract! I saw him perform on some morning show and he could barely sing a three note song yet along do these basic dance moves with any kind of real pizzazz. I don't care for Bieber, but he's certainly the superior talent. Mahone's team is clearly trying to make him the new Bieber and I find this pathetic.

    ReplyDelete
  69. He has a nice tone but his overall voice is weak. His belting is weak and thin and his range is limited. He has gotten better though.

    ReplyDelete
  70. She's overly nice to every singer. It's best to look for Deliesa Hunter. For one, she's showcased her exceptional abilities. Secondly, she just pours true tea--not hate or exaltation.

    ReplyDelete
  71. You guys are as fun as grumpy old geezers at an old folks home.
She doesn't always have a stable voice but you guys might as well be the bash katy perry club lmao.
Everyone I knew enjoyed this performance.
Her best performances are the acoustic ones, she's more of an indie artist rather than a popstar if you strip her down. Her MTV acoustic session was great, and she was a blast at warped tour.
She fits more into a rocker/indie side rather than diva.
You guys need to lighten up.

    ReplyDelete
  72. You are nothing more than a biased 'Celiniac' whose, clearly, incapable of being objective and arguing with logic. I cannot believe you actually want to continue this conversation when I've defied your poor reasoning's in every manner possible? But okay...

    1) Arguably, Mariah's hardest songs within her entire discography - range wise - are 'Emotions & Anytime You Need A Friend; both of which she has sung live (especially in her prime) on multiple occasions and in its original key. Mariah only began to lower the key of 'Emotions' a half- step, per say, post- 1994 albeit the song was released in 1991 and the same goes for 'Anytime You Need A Friend' of which she began to lower in 1996 albeit the song was released in 1993. On the other hand, Celine was lowering the key to songs such as 'Where Does My Heart Beat Now' the same year they were released which consist of no more than basic lower-mid belts.

[The climax of 'Anytime You Need A Friend' contains 2 C5's, 34 D5's, 18 E5's, 17 F5's, 10 G5's and a G6 - B6 Whistle note, all of which are sung within 1 minute and executed with virtuous dynamics, supreme resonance & tonal consistency. When has Celine ever vocalized anything of such high caliber?]

    2) Of course Mariah could sing "It's All Coming Back To Me Now", she would have had absolutely no problem with that. In actuality, Mariah would have most probably RAISED they key so to speak. Now, she may not have exhibited the same interpretive expression that Celine did but that is entirely subjective and depends on the individual listening.

  73. I have the hardest time with females because it seems like the pop sphere is based upon the same vocal range, even for males. And everyone wants the power belt and agility, so they do some pretty unnatural things.

It's nice to hear stars like Floor Jansen because they know their fach. And whew, her "Alone" cover makes Carrie Underwood's seem a bit passive.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Yeah........those............are exactly what I mean. I can see how someone would think of Usher as dramatic when you compare him to how nasal some male R&B stars get (e.g. Chris Brown)

But when you compare him to the old-school singers, like Vandross and Peabo Bryson, it's obvious something is missing in the asssessment.

What is your voice class, btw?

    ReplyDelete
  75. So what do you think of Ambrovic (sp?) and people like Millie Brown?

I thought what Yoko did was a joke. If you take a more technically refined route with a good dose of emotion, that probably would've sounded more like:
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cVBCE3gaNxc
which is reportedly an opera singer (so I heard).

I'm fairly certain some would still prefer "artful Yoko" however...

For the stuffy nose the "hung" exercise helps, the vibrations on the mask clear up those channels. Also, you should try some face yoga, I feel that really moves the blockage of fluids. I've been practicing for some weeks, as I just turned 26 and I am scared and I want to avoid getting wrinkles :P I'm like Queen Ravenna from "Snow White and the Hunstman"

For head voice there are some exercises that help you find the point where the vocal folds start to thin out and shorten, so the voice starts to go to a real head voice. I can email you some stuff if you want.

  79. Pop voices have some similarities to operatic voices, but for the most part it's just taking guesses for some, and taking educated guesses for others. I think distinguishing voices is a lot like learning a language, the more you hear it, the clearer it becomes to you.

  80. I'm not one to post my own material, but I'm looking for some feedback. I've posted these in the chatbox before, so I think it's time I put it on a FFAF.

Cover my favorite P!nk song (because it's low note heavy), "Crystal Ball"

Here is a cover of "Love is an Open Door" from Frozen. It was originally meant to be a duet w/ Eddy but ishh happened we never got it done lol.

  81. I see your points. I will say this though, it is hard not to get vested into this website. When I was doing the constructing profile shit and putting myself out there, my dumbass was not prepared for any feedback both positive and negative. I truly got bothered by the feed back and realized my skin wasn't as tough as I once thought it was. Lol, and the positive feed back really got under my skin considering how the negative feedback made me feel. I made the decision to stop because I truly wasn't mentally prepared for the feedback. Fast forward 12 months, I can definitely say my nerves or more solid but making profiles just isn't for me.

Ultimately what I'm trying to say is that, this is a place of passion and talent and its hard not to get emotionally vested when you consider what this place is about and all that runs through it. Seriously, the talent that runs through this place is breathtaking let alone the talent of the Divas this website represents. And consequently, I can understand why the comment sections are emotionally charged. LMAO....

Mind you, I'm a little bit sleepy and I'm afraid my point didn't come out as cleanly as I wished. Lol.

  83. I'd be interested in just a male video correlating rock/pop/soul vocals to their operatic counterparts. I don't think it's been done on youtube yet. Notable mentions:
    Freddie Mercury
    Stevie Wonder
    Michael Bolton
Barry White (bass-baritone IMO, not a bass).
    Josh Turner
    Axl Rose
    Robert Plant
    Luther Vandross
Peabo Bryson (the most "classical" sounding).
    Usher.

  85. And once again Celine. Guess I can't help myself but I finally found this epic performance in good quality and I think it really is worth seeing. Celine Dion - With This Tear (Live - 1993) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqmdQJge9N0

  86. But you're making it seem as if mariah is the best singer and because celine's technique is a little weak she's somehow the worlds' worst singer. not every singer must have perfect technique. celine is very emotional and thats what makes her a good singer. so... I'm not always wrong!

  87. I wonder if you guys could suggest singing lessons in form of books or CD's, DVD's because I can't afford a vocal coach and I really wanna change my voice also for the sake of the quality of my band's concerts...

  89. How interesting. I kind of have the same problem as you (but without the superrange). People often mistake me for a bass because my talking range is quite low and my low notes sound really bassy. My singing range though is in the fourth octave though.

Now, about you. I think you should tell us where your passagio is and where you feel most comfortable singing..
