Free For All Friday

It's that time agaiiiiiiiiiiin: FREE FOR ALL FRIDAY, EVERYBODY! While you guys get to it in the comments, I'm gonna watch this cat work the morph ball for a few hours. Maybe I can learn the meaning of life from it. I have a feeling it's hidden in there somewhere..

If you don't know the score, here be the rules:

  • Try not to get too perverted- this site  needs to basically be "safe for work".
  • If somebody starts a controversial subject, try keeping it civil when dealing with it. If things get out of hand please flag the conversation.
  • It would be nice if it stuck to music, but it's not a requirement! So talk about news, current events, how you're getting your hair done next time you hit the hairdresser! Whateves, really!
  • No nasty comments aimed at other users.
Inappropriate hugs to all of y'all (hi fives to the underagers), and wishing you an awesome weekend!

  2. Ah goody! Was hoping for an opportunity to share this Miranda Lambert song I recently discovered due to an interview with one of the writers of the song (Brandy Clark)
I am loving it. The video is funny and the song is catchy and the kind great to sing/shout along when a bit intoxicated LOL

  4. Seeing as I don't go or view pop concerts, I wouldn't know for sure, but this does look like "fresh" and "original". And probably because I am more ope nminded when it comes to Miley than I am towards most pop acts, I did not find that "disturbing". Instead I liked it.
(though tbh there is also plenty of Miley stuff around which I do not like so I am not sure in how far my liking this really has to do with my liking Miley)

Here is my cover of "Love & War" by Tamar Braxton. I just thought I'd post it seeing as it's my FAVORITE recording thus far. I hope you guys like it; feedback would also be very much appreciated.

Some songs are awful, but in a mashup, they're amazing. And you don't like Marnia, Lana, or Paramore? :OO

    ReplyDelete
  31. The song's a desperate grab at being "trendy", I don't think it's racist or appropriative, but I think her youth's finally wearing off because she looks like a mom trying to be a cool teen.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I liked her at first when she started getting big on YouTube, but then I kinda got tired and I thought her voice was super shrill, but The Voice rejuvenated my love for her, I think she just needed that helping hand with artistic direction.
Here's a lesser known video I love of hers.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t9E_ly8dGkY

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think her voice is fine and she has talent, but her timbre is gonna be an acquired taste. But I feel like the thing most people are amazed at is the fact that she's a nun, let's be real.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Primo Uomo Assoluto3 May 2014 at 01:02

Great! Your voice is rather androgynous but I like it :) and you sail to the high notes instead of squeezing to get them. Good job! I'd love to hear you recorded with a better microphone, your voice deserves it.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I love Jenna's milky smooth tone, although her belts could be stronger, her midrange is gorgeous. I loved her in Seasons of Love on Glee, even though it was just one small line.

On the topic of this song, what do we think of Fifth Harmony's cover of it? I think they all have beautiful, strong voices that fit together in a group, and their ad libs in the last third of the song were gorgeous and gave the song new life without going too astray. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=awq0ggVyQTQ

    ReplyDelete
  37. Blown away! I don't think any of us were expecting a voice as talented as that. And those high notes, slayyyy honey.

    ReplyDelete
  38. This is barely disturbing compared to some things we've seen out there on the internet. How old are you? Haha

  39. Primo Uomo Assoluto3 May 2014 at 01:07

Since ye all didn't mind me posting of mine some weeks ago, here's a recording I made last week, my version of Barbra's "Evergreen". I had the opportunity to record to tape as opposed to digital and I liked the color it adds to the vocal :) there's a C7 during the bridge that was sort of a happy accident, but we kept it. The instrumentation is very electro right now, so I think I'll add acoustic guitar. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ghlt_rLQMtY

    ReplyDelete
  40. On average I liked it, even though her voice sounded strange to me at times..

    ReplyDelete
  41. It doesn't look disgusting but the message behind it seems to be: I likeee bondaaageeee!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I don't even think it's very "bondage" in that It's hardly erotic. She does things that if other celeb would do it would extremely "raunchy" but when Miley does it it's just not. It's just her doing weird and interesting stuff enough. It's very different at least from what we commonly see in the pop world.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Like I said, I found potential on her voice. Yes, I liked the sound of her voice got me the 3rd time I heard the song. Maybe she sould polish her voice a little bit. But her voice is pretty nice.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I expressed myself poorly, I didn't mean it as an exclusively sexual act, but rather just - bondage. As in - I have no control over myself, or - I am being controlled by others and I like it.

The black fabric goes over her mouth most of the time, her eyes are covered with some masks and her neck is tied in many "scenes".

    ReplyDelete
  45. Beautiful!! Your tone is very similar to Sam Smith's sometimes. Fantastic job!

    ReplyDelete
  46. Okay so I have a suggestion for a new kind of segment we could do on this site, bear with me.
It's basically like an introduction to an artist, for instance: We have a lot of younger readers on this site, some who might have never even heard an Anastacia or Kylie Minogue song for example (or at least know they were listening to one),
Since they're in the beginning of a new era, it would be really cool to kind of introduce those people to these new artists who are pretty classic. We can have a written part about what makes these artists unique, and then describe their sound and voice, and give a playlist of their classic hits, as well as a few lesser known cuts we can do to hype them up.
I know DD always tries to pump up newer singers like Tinashe and Sevyn Streeter, but wouldn't it be really great if we could introduce a fresher audience to some good old classic divas?

    ReplyDelete
  47. Really cool art without taking herself too seriously (*side eyes gaga*) In no way 'literally disturbing' imo

    ReplyDelete
  48. Didn't you post this last week already?

    ReplyDelete
  49. Thought I was doing that already? ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  50. There's no Country radio in my country Natsu.
Plus I anyway don't listen to any kind of radio. Plus I think I already said many times ... I despise modern Nashville industry "Country".

It's only recently I discovered some good stuff in between the loads of horrid as well. But I just do not intent to waste hours on end listening to dross which I could spend listening to good music.

And obviously..the good stuff eventually floats to me anyway.
Like this song which I discovered through Brandy Clark's wonderful album. Brandy is the kind of Country music I do listen to.
Same with Leann Rimes' wonderful latest album. Both albums I actually discovered through Darrel Brown.
I became facebook friends with him after seeing him during the Alison Krauss Country Music Master Class organized by Renee Fleming for The Kennedy Center.
So you see, I only had to listen to good music and listening to real musicians talk, to get to the good modern Country instead of wasting loads of time wading through endless dross.
Only came there a bit later. But seeing as that later was filled with mostly good music...I am fine with that. :-)

But it all does make me rethink whether it wouldn't be better to spent the same amount of time I spent on crap pop music on crap Country music instead. Seeing as the good Country stuff imo is better than the good pop stuff. ;-)

Anyway, I love that song and video but I seem to be rather alone on that in this blog.
I really ought to find or start a Americana music blog.:-)

    ReplyDelete
  51. "As in - I have no control over myself, or - I am being controlled by others and I like it." Uhm that IS the sexual act's essence.

Not sure there is any separation there, the way you are suggesting?

  58. I hate her for her screaming. Her upper belts sound soooo nasty! Almost resemble pig squeals.

I am watching The Voice and this girl has practically NO lower register on her. She sounds flat as a dime down there. Shaky and no control. She has a very crappy cover of Katy Perry's 'Dark Horse'.

Sadly, she's going to win the competition thanks to her teeny bopper fanbase.

I love your sense of legato as well as vibrato. I'm curious however; what is your voice type? Although you were singing at a predominantly bright height, I could still hear a noticeable richness and fullness which leads me to believe that your chest voice is rather dark and heavy [2:06 - 2: 12] but you just chose to lift your vocal weight in this particular song? You're most definitely not a Lyric voice in it's entirety albeit your voice does have Lyric characteristics. Also, you have a Baritone's bottom but a Tenor's top... Spinto Tenor perhaps? Baritenor/Verdi Baritone?

Anyway, you have a lovely voice & accent and a nice face. Are you Latino or a Straight- Spaniard? [Thank you for the feedback on my video too] :-)

    ReplyDelete
  63. I quite like her voice, but I don't like that she's actually getting all the hype due to being a nun. If she ever gets to release an album, I will surely check it, though.

    ReplyDelete
  94. It isn't gays that just like the young/sexy look. That is an over-generalization. The media knows young sexy sells in America. It is an American thing if anything - not a gay thing.

    ReplyDelete
  95. That is a huge flaw in her singing. You can't understand her because she isn't as technically skilled as some people make her out to be. A song isn't really worth much if no one can understand what you're singing.

    ReplyDelete
  96. My favorite unreleased from her!

  103. In my personal opinion, Bieber doesn't have a bad voice, and the style of music he's doing now suits it, and he has this nice raspy quality from smoking so much probably.

But I think he's such a bad person right now, I used to think he was a good kid, but after drunk driving, showing absolutely no remorse for possibly putting other people's lives in danger, and acting completely unprofessionally and disrespectfully at a police questioning.

  106. Primo Uomo Assoluto4 May 2014 at 05:04

The whistle tone was pre-recorded, and it was very noticeable :P
The note before is under pitch, and then the high note comes in, and then her vocals come down, but her live vocal comes in a bit ahead, and the two vocals overlap :P

  107. Primo Uomo Assoluto4 May 2014 at 05:13

    Thanks for listening :)

Ethnically I'm mixture of Spaniard/Native American (Mestizo) with Croatian from my dad's side, and French/Spaniard from my mom's side.

I did lighten the vocal color as I wanted to convey tenderness, and I felt a heavy heavy sound wouldn't be so good for that.

My voice type is weird, my first voice teacher thought I was a Rossini tenor because of the natural agility and high notes, while my second voice teacher thinks I'm a dramatic tenor, or "drammatico d'agilità", a dramatic coloratura tenor. While other professionals with 30 years of experience insist I'm a lyric baritone or "a real tenore contraltino".

What Makes a Great Soprano (Opera).

I'm not into opera, but the virtuoso has to be respected. There's a few clips of the greats training hopefuls. Pitch is about 1/8th of what they must master. I love LOVE when a hopeful is stopped during her technically proficient delivery to be told, "You have to give me another color." Another hopeful has a slight straining issue that is corrected by a simple rounding of a vowel.

What is also impressive is that nowadays, vocal coaches work in tandem with Speech Pathologists and Ear Nose & Throat doctors. A soprano-to-be is asked to sing a scale, in order to see her vocal folds operate as she ascends. He tells her the cords are banging and shows them the footage.

Must watch, even if Opera isn't your thing. We know a lot of singers who could use more "color" and less "collisions"

I think opera is simply an acquired taste for most people. It is challenging to listen to as it is in a different language, sung at a range most people cannot sing along to, the arias can be longer than typical attention span, and involve complex emotions beyond "I love you".
But it's like liking sushi, one doesn't know if one will truly love it until one tries it a couple of times (or several) and develops a taste for it.

i really do love the Jazz songs of this concert. I hope she will do a Jazz, Soul or Blues Album. It would be awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  120. Primo Uomo Assoluto4 May 2014 at 08:36

Maybe blues. I don't think she has the finesse to sing jazz or the depth of expression to sing soul music.

  121. And not necessarily too young people. People who live outside of the USA don't know many of the songs that are considered as classics there. I, for example, when Glee did that competetion in which 30% of the songs had to be vintage, didn't know any of the ones who appeared lol so yes, I'd gladly put my two cents by adding some songs that are not yet a classic but I think they'll be in the future:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RUi54JTgL5s

What person older than 15 hasn't sung along to that "I'm sooorry I can't beee, peeerfect..."?

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YxaaGgTQYM

Who hasn't ever tried to do the two voices in the chorus of this song?

    ReplyDelete
  122. Primo Uomo Assoluto4 May 2014 at 10:13

Same in USA, people think all the great singers lived only in USA and haven't heard of the great ones in Europe, Asia, Australia or Latin America.

  124. I seem to recall that being the Fre friday thread being discussed as serving that purpose before DD started it though.

As for the single post dedicated to one artist... you can express yourself pretty good. Try writing one and submit it to DD. Maybe he will post it. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  125. Hey, I did hate it but was polite enough to therefor not respond in any way. But if you insist..I think it is a dreadful cover, guilty of the same lack of insight Leah mcFall keeps displaying.

    ReplyDelete
  126. And do you notice that this week as well, it doesn't get much response?

  127. I was referring to the sound quality and the fact that the vocals were drowned out by the instruments. The singing along is incredibly annoying but another factor than what I meant.

  130. Primo Uomo Assoluto4 May 2014 at 12:35

LOL, well...I am niche and I know it. I don't mind it if only a few people like and appreciate what I do, because if I were out to be liked by everybody I wouldn't sing what I sing with the kind of voice I sing it, so your attempt at a dig at me slides right off.
You may dislike my cover because of some subjective reason of yours, and that's completely fine. Nobody is a gold coin to be loved by everybody.
I, personally, am very proud of it because I feel it displays some of the best legato singing I've ever done as well as a well executed messa di voce which is one of the most challenging technical vocal feats a classically trained singer can pull off.
And some people have actually told me they felt a lot of emotion listening to it, so, a matter of taste :)
    Thanks for listening :)

  131. #Dreamfighter4 May 2014 at 13:20

you don't have to compare in jazz. its all about finding your own interpretation of a song. Miss Aguilera does have enough personality and finess in her voice to make a wonderful rendition. Maybe she didn't show it at the her rendition at the grammys, but she definitely could do it. (Says a jazz vocalist - not me!)
Maybe you are right about aguileras voice from a classical standpoint, but Jazz is not your gap. Or did you study it?
Other things we talk her are about preferences... but in Jazz nearly everything is possible... so we don't have a basis to talk about.

  137. No "dig". Just my honest opinion. Note I have stated in the past I like your tone and it is obvious your technique is excellent. And all I said now was that it showed the same lack of insight Leah's covers do. Not exactly a huge "dig". Seeing as Leah's covers are liked by quite a lot of people. Millions in fact. Hardly niche.
I do love how you are reading all kinds of things in my assessment that I didn't say. Maybe those were points others mentioned though?

Once again you are clearly contradicting yourself.
The only one making "digs" here is you. Which would indicate you DO mind. Just like re-posting this when it didn't get the attention you hoped for last week might indicate that "niche" is not at all what you are content with.

Using the argument what "some people" told you about your cover..another
clear sign you most definitely care what other people say.

The calling me a "hater" when I merely, with no judgment in any way on your singing, ask if you didn't already posted it last week...another indicator you care way more than you pretend to do.

Which is normal dude. Who wouldn't care what other people think of their singing. If you didn't care, you wouldn't be posting it on youtube nor here. (on the other hand, it is true you disable the rating system under your videos. Well under the ones of you singing that is.. But not the commentaries. Which of course you can either respond to or delete. Neither you can do with the just thumbs up or down. Can you now? ;-D )
Just fyi...I know and understand why you pretend you don't care. I just wish you would realize the act isn't fooling anybody.
    And your welcome. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  138. So you are reading that video as Miley saying she is controlled and manipulated by the music industry and she likes it?
How exactly does that stack up against her saying she restrained herself in line with her Disney contract because that was her contract (signed when she was a small child) but now is free to do what she wants?
This is not Gaga and her self contradictory passive-aggressive nonsense we are talking.
I think Miley doesn't feel retrained at all at present (well other than by her health issue right now)
I think you are reading some kind of statement in this which isn't there.
But if that message is all that a disturbing one to you, the "bondage" of industry, you must be disgusted by most of today's popstars and sports stars for that matter?

Here is another great artist from New Zealand, Gin Wigmore. A lot of people say she is like a cross between Amy Winehouse, Duffy, and Janis Joplin but I appreciate her for her talent, songwriting, and the attitude she has in her songs. She played in the Vans Warped Tour last summer and I was rather bummed that I wasn't able to go but anyway I wanted to share her great music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u7aNKstBCM4

So far I've only written three posts on Lily Allen, Ariana Grande, and Mariah. My writing takes a more comedic route, and it's very very gay (like gayer than DD), I'm hoping to write more soon but it might take a while since AP exams are starting.

  156. So I'm kind of shameless plugging right now, but I've started a new music blog, and I'm kind of hoping people check it out and tell me what you think. So far I've only written three posts about Ariana, Mariah, and Lily Allen. I kind of have a comedic vibe in my writing, but I do have actual topics and opinions I'm writing about. It's mainly pop, just reflecting my own personal style, but I definitely won't hesitate to write about music from other genres. It's also a little less focus on the vocals as this site is, and more about just songs and albums and such in whole.
Disclaimer: In no way do I think I'm a good writer, but I feel like I just have a bunch to say about pop music so I wanted to get it out there.

  157. LOL happy to oblige. I have been thinking of doing some practice pieces myself and see if I can come up with enough to start a blog. But it definitely will under no circumstances have anything on Mariah or Ariana. Lilly Allen...perhaps. ;-)

Wouldn't worry about it MikeyPop, imo you can write alright. And you indeed have an amusing way about you.
I am not "following" because I don't have a tumblr account and refuse to open yet another internet account. But I bookmarked and will be reading the other two articles as well as keep an eye out for new ones.

Yes! Although I don't think it's much of a location thing but more of a time thing (most of my friends don't listen to 'old' music anymore, they perceive my music taste as weird). Laura Pausini is extremely overrated; basically Italy's Katy Perry..

I have studied jazz, yes, I sang with a group during my undergrad years and performed at a club here in Houston called Cezanne that is pretty prestigious.
I think Christina could perhaps sing jazz if she tames her hoolabaloola tendencies as she has done for some things, in her case, less is more. My favorite vocal performances by her are in songs such as "Falling in love again", "Birds of prey", "Save me from myself", "Genie 2.0", etc

    ReplyDelete
  181. Primo Uomo Assoluto6 May 2014 at 10:13

Friends that wanted to record me :) specifically to record to tape

As I said, nobody lights a candle to hide it or put it away. I show my work because I'm proud of it, because even if it's not as good as someone like Barbra, it is the best I can do at this moment of my artistic development, which I consider a life-long journey.
I think most people would agree that people like Yma Sumac, Kimera, Sarah Brightman, Malena Ernman, etc are "niche", and I feel they are the closest I could parallel to myself. That doesn't mean I don't want or care if people listen to my music or not. It means I understand it's certainly not for everybody's taste.

You must understand that the gif I used was ironic, because it seemed what you wrote was with the intention of poking fun at me or something, which I kinda expect you to do sometimes.

And I've already explained to you why I don't enable ratings for my singing. To this day I have stans of a particular singer stalking my videos leaving nasty comments, and their opinion is not welcome. But if you ever saw the comments people leave me, I don't delete comments that question my voice or technique or interpretation, I actually enjoy engaging in musical discussion about that. I only delete those that are truly threatening and flat out seek to offend me.

    ReplyDelete
  182. #Dreamfighter6 May 2014 at 10:18

You studied both, Jazz and Classical vocals? How old are you?

I think, the point in Jazz is, that you really make a song your own. Christina has her unique way of singing and interpret songs. So for sure she is able to sing Jazz (even with her hoolabolooa tendencies).

    ReplyDelete
  186. That's what I said primo, "nobody lights a candle to hide it or put it away". That's why I don't believe you when you say you "don't care what people think".
Your explanation of disabling the rating is undermining your statement even more so.
Believe me, I totally get you in that. I did the same when I saw people were thumbing down videos of artists just because they were engaged in argument with me over something totally unrelated.
But I did that BECAUSE I care. I care when the rating gets skewered like that by childish individuals. and naturally so do you.
Your statement on how you respond to some comments and delete others is exactly what I said you did. :-)

I didn't see your gif as "ironic". There was no reason for me to interpret it like that yet every reason to interpret it as I did.

Now, in spite of anything else, when I decide to check out a video of one of the posters here singing, ANYONE of the posters, I do my utmost to judge it fairly and without letting previous arguments influence my assessment. I also do my best to phrase my judgment honestly but if it is negative, not nastily.

Hence I ignored it the first time, but spoke my mind the second time. I really felt , like Leah, you were overdoing it, trying to put every note you can sing and every technique you mastered, into the song. When imo it is a "simple" song with an emotional content more fitting to "straightforward" singing. Therefor, seeing as your approach was the opposite of that view, it was a dreadful cover to me.

  190. I think you guys are right. Tone throws a lot of us novices off. I think a clear sign is the head voice in "Left outside alone." It sounds like an amateurish mezzo (solely because she isn't probably using operatic technique).

Also, the sheer volume of her upper notes vs. her lower notes live is a good indicator.

    ReplyDelete

  192. It's more to it than that. Below F4 she might sound a little androgynous which is understandable. However, above F4 her voice takes on a feminine color. A true contralto would only have feminine top notes if that at all. The only reason a contralto's top notes would be "feminine" would be due to lightening and brightening every voice goes through.
