Nicole Scherzinger Returns With "Your Love"

If there was ever any doubt that a great set of pipes is never a guarantee of chart success, look no further than Nicole Scherzinger.

With a voice that could destroy many a Diva, the Ex-Pussycat Doll hasn't quite managed to recapture the glory days she shared with her fellow Dolls. Some would say that's the fault of the material she's been singing over- something I'd disagree with, actually enjoying a lot of her solo stuff!

Well, maybe new song Your Love will be more to the tastes of the masses- sure as hell ain't doing much for me! I do like the production, though, but Nicole's voice just isn't unique enough in its mid-range to carry the song. This is why she needs to belt or give us some head-notes.

Anyway, I think this is going to be one of those tracks where the video ends up making or breaking the song for me.

Thoughts?

  1. I don't see why this song had an electriconic approach. It aint that bad but when I hear a song like this, I need me a freak, freak, nasty beat not some *I'm about to go to the white folks club and hop around and fist pump while strobe lights make me nauseous.* The singing, lyrics and the beat really don't mesh well... 5/10....

Generic radio song. *snores* She has too much talent and training to sing a song as boring as this.

  3. I love Nicole's voice and some of her stuff from her debut album but she's not growing artistically and this sucks.

  4. Your white folks club read is 1000% on point.

  5. I agree that her voice doesn't mesh well with the 90's electronic vibe, and does anyone else feel like the song's production sounds a little cheap and unmastered? The song's got a lot of different elements but nothing is coming together. The writing doesn't even come across as romantic like they should, and Nicole has too much talent and too good a voice to be filtered like some kind of will.i.am track.

I'm easily pleased with pop music and I can take most of it, but this song actually sounds manufactured, with a lazy excuse for a hook, a whatever beat that was pulled off out of a recording studio trash can, and unmemorable cut & paste lyrics.

  6. This song makes Paris Hilton sound decent.

  7. As someone who owns her album, I take slight offense to that, even though I know there's truth behind that shade.

  8. I loved the album. I clearly pointed out that the one I couldn't bear was this song LOL.

  9. I love Nicole, but I was actually referring to Paris Hilton's album ahaha.
(and was Her Name Is Nicole even released?)

    ReplyDelete
  10. Her Name Is Nicole was never released but it's on the internet everywhere.

And also... oh... Well I can't say anything. I liked Stars Are Blind...? LOL

  11. I agree, very manufactured sounding but I'm rarely pleased by today's pop music. This sort of music is the kind I'd be expect to hear on a Britney Spears album. And that's not a good thing when you have more talent in your little toe than Britney.

  12. Hmmmm....Well...

What can I say really? I could ramble on about wasted talent, generic production ect but I don't see the point as it will only frustrate me purely based on her capacity to deliver so much more than....this....

That being said I am glad to have her back releasing music and away from the talent show situation. I just hoped for better. The worst thing about this is the fact I was put off instantly by her delivery in the first verse. I hope the next single shows us what she is really capable of.

Monica's voice not as powerful as Christina's?

I rest my case. Monica is a true dramatic soprano. Christina is a lyric mezzo-soprano who needs to scream like Godzilla to project.

And Monica can sing infinitely more refined than Christina can, for example:

  19. Just correct you there (having been a member of this blog for several years and having an extremely good idea of the tastes of the other people who post and their musical interests/tastes...) 'You don't care', at the very least be honest.

Also if you really care so little for these artists then why bother to comment, if DD happened to post an article relating to it nobody would be breaking your arms to either read or comment on either....

    ReplyDelete
  20. LOL Oh I wouldn't even go there Stuey. Because it would mean I'd actually have to look AND listen to she whose name shall not be mentioned.
As for the rest. it would be.... Madonna (though not for the very weak vocals obviously), Callas, Streisand (because Streisand in any combination with any other singer in popular music will always win) and Mariah.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I still stand by my opinion. Something both of us do quite frequently.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Hahaha indeed! It would certainly make for interesting reading! I would have to mute my computer though just by the off chance one of "she's" videos went off by accident!

I actually wholeheartedly agree with your choices funnily enough. Madonna for the simple fact that whilst vocally she is nothing amazing her impact and songs are enough. I cannot choose between the next option, I thought for respect to others and the fact some love them I would put it out there, I would personally rather listen to a broken washing machine lol. Callas as I prefer her timbre although its a very close one indeed. Streisand because the nuances and softer moments are far more comforting to the ear than Celines often attacking and (dare I say it) sometimes cheesy delivery. Finally Mariah simply for the voice.

What artists would you like to see war it out?

    ReplyDelete
  23. Mariah VS Whitney... Whitney all the way!

    ReplyDelete
  24. Cool, I would say MC but its a matter of taste. What puts her ahead for you? :)

I prefer the dynamics of MC's voice and her technical ability (strangely I prefer her voice more as it has aged) and her music although sometimes I would like her to push the envelope with her material more, such as different genres but if she is happy then so am I.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I just love the power and tonality that Whitney possesses... it's something so grandeur. However, Mariah on the other hand is a vocalist whose virtuosity and capabilities far outmatch Whitney's. I actually love both, I just heard Whitney sing first and that nostalgia blinds me... lol!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I would agree about Whitney, nobody can deny the talent for sure its just so tragic how she (and sadly many others) succumbed to the demon drugs ect one of those ones where you just hoped she had got herself sorted, even in the 'I Look To You' days though she was still impressive but it fell apart live though :(. Its one of those age old debates with these two, I can see both sides of the argument though for sure.

I had definitely heard Whitney first too, I actually didn't get into Mariah until about thirteen years ago (jeez, not much when you say it quick lol)

    ReplyDelete
  27. I have to agree. Such a sad life Whitney lead after the demonic drugs overtook her. At least one Diva out of the Original Trinity is still standing strong, Celine Dion. People forget she's in the same league as Whitney and Mimi! lol

    ReplyDelete
  28. Totally with you, Dion is fab too! I actually really enjoyed her new album, it was nice to see her freshen up her sound but still remain true to her roots. Vocally she has also remained pretty static in her quality which amazes me considering the vocal punishment of doing all those Vegas shows.

    ReplyDelete
  29. You would pick some biased video highlighting Christina's worse and these singers best. And not all of the belts were bad. Lets examine a little closer, Monica's Eb5 was so nasil, If I hadn't seen it was Monica, I would have thought that was lightweight Ariana there. It was also shrill and pushed. That E5 of Christina's "Candyman", first started an octive lower and an went up to the E5 and her mic was 2 feet away from her mouth. So don't tell me her voice isn't as powerful. Monica keeps the mic redicoulously close to her face.

    ReplyDelete
  30. She's like Patti LaBelle, naturally gifted with vocal longevity.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Please Christina takes risk and lays all out on the stage, she is not a robot unlike Beyoncé. Vocals have no emotions, just a repetitive vibrato.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I would rather take the robot anyday. Beyoncé is vocally is superior and I'm no Beyhive member, but I know real singing. Beyoncé uses correct technique no matter what she singing rather its pop, rnb, adult contemporary, or Latin. Christina uses correct technique, never.

  34. Absolutely Monica is better in every aspect than Christina. Monica uses correct technique, produces healthy sound and resonates greatly. Christina is a joke and should have not been teaching that contestant how to belt. She was really teaching her how to destroy her voice. I hear people who are not followers of music and singing as we are speak of how terrible her screaming is. Screaming is not the same as belting and screaming is not powerful vocals.

  35. Lol

    ReplyDelete
  36. Oh, so basically that fanmade collection of demos lol.

And well I won't argue with you because I know it's Paris and all, but I like it dammit haha

    ReplyDelete
  37. I agree, except I'm gonna have to disagree on the Britney part, aside from her most recent, she's always consistently put out very good forward thinking pop music actually. She may not have the range to sing to the moon, but she's more of a deliverer or great music than a vocalist.

Anyways yeah, I'm really curious to why her management gave her this song. Although I'm not sure why her management is doing anything they do, such as not releasing her material in America, despite her massive success in Europe and with PCD. And Boomerang actually charted in the top 10 in the few countries she's released them too.

    Maybe she's testing new ground?

    ReplyDelete
  38. I don't think the lower and higher extremities of this song is as complimentary of her voice as it is to Bey's, but when she did good she did good.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Oh; I also have one guilty pleasure from one of the albums "Fighting Over Me" LMFAO!

    ReplyDelete
  40. Nothing in This World was immaculate though. With a "da, da da, dada da da" much catchier than this B-list Disney star reject here.

    ReplyDelete
  41. That song's not bad either. But somehow I can't really get into that song. :\

    ReplyDelete
  42. LOL This Monica women eviscerated Christina in every clip.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Her voice cracked on the high F, but it's otherwise reasonably excellent.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yyw3ZKZ2agk

    ReplyDelete
  44. LOL it sure would be torture for both of us eh? ;-)

I picked Madonna and Callas for the same reasons, Streisand because (much as I love Dion as well) she is just superior in every aspect of singing really.
Mariah because I think she is a better interpreter of song.

But actually I think the concept is rather quaint to me...this "battle" between singers. I mean, given two choices, I can pick one but I have not ever thought of setting the challenge myself. But now that I think about it, I could say Alison Krauss v. Mindy Smith. But only because I know a lot of fans of the one are also fan of the other. But personally, that surprises me as I don't think there is a real question there. :-) Suffice it to say..Mindy bores me to death.

  46. shes so talented in so many ways
so sad that her voice gets wasted on a track like this...
the chorus sucks, the lyrics suck, is she even singing the verses???

    ReplyDelete
  47. I don't like the cover because it's boring. Why cover a song if you're not going to leave you mark on it? I just haven't been away to distinguish Rita O from other pop star. She's just seems kind of redundant. She makes such a fashion statement but nothing with her music. Although, at first glance she always looks like Rihanna.

    ReplyDelete
  48. There is no doubt that crazy stans are behind those ridiculous votes. To even imply otherwise is ludicrous. Beyonce was in the clear lead before it became a button bashing war.

    ReplyDelete
  49. This is actually pathetic.

    ReplyDelete
  50. To be fair Christina does have stamina! I mean the fact that she can even still talk after years of screaming is a true testament to that. :)

IDGAF to that healthy singin whatever... christina is in the mothafuckin house... i love her mothafuckin voice, it is real soul and emotion. and isnt that the mothafuckin point of music, to make us feel somethin and entertain us.... look at xtina's voice as like a steak. you are dieting but you know it aint healthy and fatty as hell, but it makes y'all feel somethin, somethin real good. that to me is what matters...

  52. Nicole gets the songs everyone rejects.

  53. Why am I not surprised that the Mariah haters are talking shit when this performance has nothing to with her.
