[New Music] Mariah Carey - "Thirsty"

Jeez, Mariah. What is this mess of a new song, Thirsty??

Really, I don't even know how to react to this. There's a part of me hoping I'm slightly in shock from the direction she's decided to take with the track, and that it'll grow on me once the HQ version  hits. But honestly, this Pour It Up/ Obsessed/ Ni**as In Paris hybrid just sounds awful to me and I can't see myself changing my mind. Vocally, she doesn't sound great either, with the end belt being stringy, unpleasant and nigh on impossible for her to recreate live.

So disappointed right now.

Thoughts?

  3. http://www.directlyrics.com/new-music-mariah-carey-thirsty-premiere-news.html <- The HQ version can be found below but.... IDK. Like.... I really hoped she put some more thought into this. It's so cluttered.

  5. OK... I can't turn up to no Mariah Carey... Dafuq I look like... She used to have a 5 octave vocal range.... no...I can't...simply can't...like FRFR..... And the song ain't even club material like dafuq is it? I swear if I see some girls twerking to this at Exclusiv I'm gonna leave the joint.

  6. Wow, readers over there are loving it!

    ReplyDelete
  7. Really? Help me get into it, tell me exactly what you're here for!

  8. this is really off topic, sorry bout it. But I wondered what does Sam Smith do on the chorus of 'Money On My Mind' ? Is it mixed voice or just a really, really developed falsetto? How can I do this? Like my falsetto is so breathy and silent I wonder how I can sing up there loudly and with tone. Anyone ?

  9. I have the same problem :/ I applied vocal cord closure and compression and now the volume increased in my falsetto (not dramatically though) but not the timbre

  10. Pretty much what I expected

  11. I'm not here for this either. To noisy for me.

I do like though that every song off this album sounds really different. Beautiful was indeed beautiful and fresh, The art of letting go was truly heartfelt and I can tell that Mariah put her heart in the lyrics, YME was meh and this is just far to noisy.

I am excited for the other tracks though.

  12. I love Mariah but I hardly listen to anything she's done since Daydream, with maybe a few exceptions. I prefer her ballads like, Vision of Love, Vanishing, Can't Let Go, Hero, and Melt Away.

lol y'all are exaggerating...it's not that bad. I think it's the idea of Mariah Carey singing the song that makes you stay away

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yes my point exactly!!!!! She's branching out and it doesn't suit her... I'm not here for her thot music!!! She looks to clean to represent us thots!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  15. thedigblackbick14 May 2014 at 01:30

I guess she has some thot she needs to let out lol can't keep it in forever.
    I mean, it's a nice song...but yeah, Mariah? You're 40 something lol chill

    ReplyDelete
  16. The only way I can accept this is that she's reaching her mid-life crisis... and she's not even that old.

    ReplyDelete
  17. According to other stans, public reception is very good. This is probably what she needs to propel her into relevancy. Next will come a ballad, of course.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Yeah that's the first thought that came to mind with this track. Something basic and thotty to make people get hooked then bam, hit them with a power ballad like it's 1999.

    ReplyDelete
  19. She kinda is though.

But what's wrong with Mariah making this kind of music? Please don't tell me that her status and/or reputation limits the kind of music she can make.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I prefer her ballads too. She's had some good ones since Daydream. Butterfly, Lead the Way, We Belong Together, I Stay in Love, I Wanna Know What Love Is.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I'm guessing she'll release "One More Try".

    ReplyDelete
  22. I don't know, my brain associates her with a specific kind of music. I mean sure she has done some similar stuff before...

    ReplyDelete
  23. Uh. I think everyone is focussing too much on that it's Mariah and not enough on the song. The song isn't bad, and neither is the vocal. Those runs at the end are insane. The song is catchy, although the prechorus is kinda weak. If this was a new singer, everyone would be going "who the fuck is this that voice is awesome".
    I'm here for this.
As to the people saying they only associate Mariah with her 5 octave range, can't dance to this, she's a ballad only singer etc; let's not forget Shake it Off, It's Like That, Touch My Body etc. She's done songs like this before, and been successful with them. I think it's a style that really suits her.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Say what you will, but it's not half as boring as its washed out predecessor. I like this look on Mariah, I've been craving a bit of bite/charisma from her. I think she's a lot more versatile than people give her credit for. Personally, I hope she experiments a lot more.

    ReplyDelete
  25. I will say this, and I am a fan as all of us are, but even more so im a realist. Mariah the five octive power house is gone and never coming back. She don't have the vocal capabilities anymore. Her voice is super thin, damaged, and shrill at points. She don't have the vocal control anymore. She lips all the time. The fact that she lipped a song as simple as You're Mine says it all. I've come to accept Mariah the as what she has been for the last 10 years, a trendy R&B- Hip Hop artist.(But cry when I see pre 97 live performances). I think she is great writer and has written some deep songs. This isn't anything good but its not as bad as Pour It Up or Obsessed. At least she didn't sing about sex. But maybe that will all change when the video is released. We know Mariah will be naked in any video no matter the song type.

    ReplyDelete
  26. yo, actually, coming back now. give the song a couple more listens and listen to the ad-libs that are buried beneath the backing track. it's actually an amazingly circus clutter song to the point where its great and i am convinced that crazyriah is here to stay. god bless.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Just release the album already... Enough with the singles!!!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Edit: She's always been an albums artist, exclusively, so what's with all the damn singles? Ugh!

    ReplyDelete
  29. But...

Mariah has always been, essentially, a "Popular- singles Artist" since the beginning of her career; a "Popular- singles act" of whom possessed the ability to also sell albums [once upon a time especially] and most notably in the United States.

It's not as if she were a Jazz, Blues, Neo-Soul, Heavy-Metal or Progressive Rock artist where there is only a few, or if any, singles released at all by their record label to Top 40 Radio/Digital outlets. One could argue that Prince, Pink Floyd, Bruce Springsteen and even Maxwell & Jill Scott are "Albums artists" but not Ms. Carey-Cannon. : - D

    ReplyDelete
  30. I thoroughly agree. Personally speaking, I think...

    1) Mariah should participate in a Las Vegas residency sometime in the near future. Albeit she was never a "Global- Touring force" to begin with, especially to the likes of Celine Dion or even Whitney Houston, nor did she ever quite possess the greatest of live- performance skills, but I think that the majority of her fans [including myself] would definitely like and approve of that.

    2) From an artistic perspective, she has failed to capture my full attention since Glitter circa. 01. Also, she no longer has the voice for 'Power ballads' and her continual involvement within the Mainstream R&B/Hip-Hop aria is becoming quite stagnant. I believe she should turn towards Jazz music [her voices carries enough finesse perfect for that genre] or perhaps create a mature & classicist- R&B/Soul standards album in the vein of Toni Braxton's/Babyface's recent work.

  31. To each their own but this song is terrible, in my opinion. This is the music that I want Mariah to be creating now, I beg of her.......

Mariah why do you do this to me? I wanna love you, and you keep hurting me :(

    ReplyDelete
  33. LOL If she made music like that maybe I'd refind some of that respect I used to have for Mariah as an artist.
In the meantime, thanks for posting that. A treat! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  34. Primo Uomo Assoluto14 May 2014 at 15:02

She can do any kind of music she wants, but I feel at this point in her career, at this point in her life, she should be showing far more artistic growth than she has. I feel she is flat out catering to the basic bitches trying to stay relevant instead of making art. I feel I see an artistic growth in artists like Anastacia, Monica Naranjo, Lara Fabian, etc who are in their late 30's, early to mid 40's, but Mariah tries so hard to play with the kids, it's embarrassing.

    ReplyDelete
  35. I'm just gonna run from Mariah and listen to Jazmine Sullivan's new song. LMAO. I still got 12 ounces of faith in Mariah. I had a whole pound but...you know.... she knocked of 4 ounces with that shit above.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Primo Uomo Assoluto14 May 2014 at 15:05

When he sings "More" or when he sings "Money in my mind"?
"More" sounds like a light head voice mix to me
While "Money on my mind" sounds like a splatted, nasal mixed voice

    ReplyDelete
  37. Primo Uomo Assoluto14 May 2014 at 15:07

Perhaps you would think she is a "show off", but I think you should check out Debelah Morgan, especially her more R&B stuff. I could send you some of her music if you want.

    ReplyDelete
  38. The run definitely sounds better on the high quality version. Also the song gets more palatable with repeated listen- still not loving it. But as someone below mentioned, the production is cluttered. The mix, in parts, is also too high on the instrumentation, making her vocals sound washed out.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I wish I was exaggerating. I usually love Mariah experimenting with harder beats and different genres- Migrate is still my song. But Thirsty still sounds like a mess to me- even on the HQ version. I think my main beef with it now is the production. It's awful.

    ReplyDelete
  40. So soothing- love this album. MAriah had to have been listening to a lot of minne when she came up with bliss.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Well I'm sorry.... I just can't make my basic little mind accept her outputting music like this. It's not the subject of the song that's got me all riled up. It's the poor attempt that I really hate. And TBH, I always viewed Mariah as simply a voice... Most of the music I've listened to from her her just leaves a lot to be desired and... Maybe I should I give her more of a chance but...considering I really dislike her...I probably won't LMAO.

Cheers, I will look for her videos on youtube. Though I vaguely recall checking her out before.

  45. Her majesty OpieEver14 May 2014 at 16:07

Boo, you really need to do a English refresher course. :-)
Seeing as I am not denying I use personal taste as the measuring stick for which singers are in my personal taste, I can not be called a "hypocrite".

    ReplyDelete
  46. Posting an Ariana performance in a Mariah post? Dude, you really are bold lol

    ReplyDelete
  47. I think that you missunderestood his comment. He didn't mean that people who sing with proper technique are not naturally gifted singers. He meant that some singers don't naturally have the emotion and the beautiful tone and therefore they're only good trait is technique, but that doesn't mean that someone can't have the the three of them (Mariah is/was an example of a combination of the three). Anyway, I agree with you: bashing Renee Fleming was not okay, that lady does have the three of them.

(Now that I reread this I think I didn't explain myself too well. If it's the case, let me know)

He also has a point in saying that usually clasically trained singers "can't" sing pop songs. And by "can't" that doesn't mean that they're not able to hit all the notes, to do all the acrobatics and to convey the emotion, but that there's usually something off in it. As a (bad) example: the technique for playing tennis and paddle tenis is pretty much the same, but if you put a professional tennis player to play paddle, he won't be too comfortable and there will be something off in his play.

BTW, even though I think that you could have refrained from insulting back, you are completely right: that guy's response was plain rude and completely unnecessary.

    ReplyDelete
  48. You're very welcome. :-)

I adore Minnie Riperton and I believe that this is the musical direction in which Mariah should gravitate towards.

    ReplyDelete
  49. LMAO. Exactly...

    ReplyDelete
  50. I like the song for what it is , I'm not judging mariah. I think it has that 90s throwback vibe which she created so I don't why people are surprised . I actually think its really great.

    ReplyDelete
  51. He didn't "bash" Renee Fleming. He merely gave his polite opinion.
He also btw already gave a perfectly thorough explanation of what he meant himself. As usual primo simply did not READ that explanation due to his blind spot.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Her Majesty OpieEver14 May 2014 at 17:28

LOL I see you found a dedicated fan? Your "biggest Fan" probably. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  53. He said that her voice was annoying and called her a "sub-singer". That, for me, is bashing.

I didn't know he had given a deeper explanation of what he meant because, TBH, I'm too lazy to read all the posts because I've been all day studying and my mind is not ready for that... actually, I don't even know why I am posting in here since I'm going to start a debate I just don't have the strenght to handle right now. I'll just go back to drawing...

Btw yo... Pardon "Elise" forgot one! Yo..."Elise" may want to fix that. And the "Elise" account might want to click Follow on the "Primo" account. Ya know, just so as to sell it more convincingly when it up votes your every comment within the hour. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  55. LOL Leith little advice..If you are too lazy to read and don't want to get into a debate, better not respond in arguments like these.
Or at least read what you do decide to respond on?

What he said about Renee was "Renee Fleming, about whom I only meant that her voice is ordinary, if
anything. She sounds like people when they would mock opera."

Now I also think highly of Renee and I read that as something I don't agree with but not at all as "bashing" i.e Fierce criticism or opposition.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Holy shit. I have always been a fan of Arianas tone, and her sound. Her enunciation though, it bring her entire voice into a different sound. Kinda wish she'd re-record problem because that live version is 10times better than the song.

    ReplyDelete
  57. and to add to that, Mariah should be taking notes. When someone critiques something with your technique, in this case Arianas enunciation, you fix it. Mariah could use some humbleness.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Yes, we can. Nodules shouldn't take multiple octaves from her repertoire. Beyond that, she caused her own vocal nodules due to her bad habits. Vocal range is supposed to grow with age when you are a trained singer, not shrink,

    ReplyDelete
  59. I knew I would have to face the mix sooner or later. What can I do if I want to improve my voice significantly but can't afford a vocal coach? Like are there any books, CD's etc you could recommend?

    ReplyDelete
  60. I like to see you put so much strength into debate. Most people lack this kind of passion.

    ReplyDelete
  61. I'll up vote yours too.

    ReplyDelete
  62. what you guys think about this? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E4VE4qgzLgc

    ReplyDelete
  63. I want Mariah to cover Minnie ripperton so bad. I'd love to hear her take on inside my love and reasons.

    ReplyDelete
  64. To be honest I love it

    ReplyDelete
  65. LOL I don't really care for upvotes. My point was I have severe doubts Elise and Primo are different people.
But whether they are or are not, if you upvote what primo is saying, you cannot sincerely upvote what I am saying. Seeing as they are comments/opinions counter each other.

    ReplyDelete
  66. Like I said, I like to debate. I would hope anybody would put passion into doing whatever they like to do? Not everybody debating likes to debate though. That is often their downfall. ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  67. ps here's another person saying the same thing you are missing is actually being said...

  68. Mariah's technique was fine early on in her career, she's had nodules since a very young age, before her debut.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Her Majesty OpieEver14 May 2014 at 20:42

Also I never put singers down FOR having good technique nor do I claim technically mediocre singers to be better than mediocre. Once again the only one demonstrating logical fallacies....wait for it..............You Boo!

    ReplyDelete
  70. No, you're wrong, Primo Uomo Assoluto is actually correct. That comment made on Rene's singing insinuates that those who sing properly with adept skill aren't talented singers. That is incredibly incorrect and is by every standard of the word, ignorant. I wholeheartedly agree with what Primo is saying.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Pop isn't as defining as other genres. There is no definite 'pop sound'. Not many classical singers can sing pop, all of them can. The sound of a particular singer may be reminiscent of another Genre but that in no way means it isn't pop, and that they can't sing pop. Being "too trained" doesn't prohibit one from singing pop. Mariah Carey, Whitney, Dilessa Hunter, Chris Mann, Lea Michelle and many others are incredibly skilled in classical music and can sing pop perfectly. There are those who'd disagree and counter "they don't sound like pop" but again, there is no definite pop sound. It doesn't exist. A variety of different sounds constitute Pop. It's not just one. No, Alanseasable isn't correct, not objectively.

    ReplyDelete
  72. She so thirsty *ehem* horny *ehem*, she really wants to get that "D" alright. Anyway kidding aside, what happened??? she kept on talking about ballads and where are they??? Another poor song choice to stay relevant and attract the young crowd. Okay im gonna listen to some other song because this is so...... "trashy." (she should change the title to that).
    http://www.reactiongifs.com/r/lalalala.gif

    ReplyDelete
  73. No, OMT is on the standard tracklist.

"Dedicated" has Nas in it, and he's a rapper, so I don't think it's a ballad.

    ReplyDelete
  74. I don't think it's embarrassing to chase success and relevancy. And I don't think she has to show artistic growth. She did 'mature' music very early in her career, so I don't think she has to do it anymore. She can do what she wants.

And also, are you insinuating that hip-hop isn't an art? Your whole comment came off as rather elitist, so I just wanted to understand what you meant.

    ReplyDelete
  75. I agree with Primo when he talks about technique, but I disagree with his way of dealing with contrary opinions, especially when he make rude remarks. But who am I to lecture others? By the end of the day we are a bunch of strangers talking about music and singers / vocalists who don't give a shit about it.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Just stop guys she can't make ballads forever and she needs to chase trends too and seriously did I mention the word Mariah is not synonymous with the word ballad she doesn't need to make that kind of music she's always said that hip-hop was her passion so rn she's doing what she wants

This is better than her last two singles to be honest cuz TAOLG was shit in a shithole that wasn't flushed for days and YME was just a recording of the the air

    guys

    please

    ReplyDelete
  77. It's a wonder how she even has 5 octaves with nodules but she learnt how to use that to her advantage and sing through them. I know someone who had a 3.5 octave range, developed nodules later in life and now they can barely cover 2 octaves, so yes nodules do take away your voice especially if you overwork it so much like Mariah did. Her "bad" vocal habits were not that prominent either I don't think.

    ReplyDelete
  78. I'm interested in hearing her version of this.

    ReplyDelete
  79. LOL you do realize your up votes are visible?

    Bliss is untouchable.

    ReplyDelete
  81. thedigblackbick14 May 2014 at 23:44

Really. She has tons of ballads in past albums. Leave the woman alone and let her do what she wants LOL....seriously...she's made her place in the music industry, so now I would say she's just having fun.

    ReplyDelete
  82. You are kidding right?
Most of the singers you mentioned are not classical singers. Just because someone took lessons, doesn't make her a classical singer. You cannot possibly be equating those singers you mentioned to a Renee Fleming? No dear, Mariah and Whitney and Lea are not "incredibly skilled in classical music" the way Renee Fleming is. LOL

As for the point Alanseable and I were making, I refer you to the link I posted right above your comment here.

    ReplyDelete
  83. I like you Jules!!!! Keep up the good shade!!!

    ReplyDelete
  84. It does NOT insinuate that at all. And he didn't need to "insinuate" , he actually explained it.
He was not saying what you and Primo are reading.
What he was saying was the same thing this guy is saying...
    http://www.backstage.com/advice-for-actors/singing/transitioning-from-opera-to-broadway/

And he also was saying he doesn't think Renee has as much natural ability as she has technical ability.
Now personally I happen to disagree with him on that particular statement but like primo keeps admonishing others , even if he does tend to not realize that aspect in his own likes, technical skill is measurable objectively, the other thing is subjective.

    ReplyDelete
  85. This cover is just a show stopper. I live her voice above C5. I just wish she was as comfortable belting as she was singing in HV.

    ReplyDelete
  86. Yeah Solange's music is something really special.

    ReplyDelete
  87. It came from compounded frustration at primo's responses. As he made clear.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Mariah's range has been roughly the same since her prime, always about 4 octaves. Her range has actually grown since her prime as well, extending several notes lower, into the mid second octave. She has lost a few of the stratospheric high notes, but has shown the facility to reach at least C#7.

I really don't know where you've gotten that she's lost octaves?
I should clarify, I'm not a fan of Mariah, but I believe you should come correct if you're going to make statements.

    ReplyDelete
  89. She's lipping here, beginning to end.

    ReplyDelete
  90. She's going to put out her voice soon if she keeps shouting out those G#s.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Mariah's technique was super good though, not like Ariana's.

    ReplyDelete
  92. Yes, obviously because she's aged she has to start making music that isn't young or fun. Obviously, when one reaches a certain age, one has to stop doing certain things because of societal expectations.

Ridiculous. I don't think this kind of music suits her half as much as hip-hop, but as you said, to each their own.

    ReplyDelete
  93. Opie, are you implying that certain types of music are more respectable than others??

    ReplyDelete
  94. Yes, obviously when one reaches a certain age, they lose the freedom to do what they want.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Are you kiddingZ? Her artistic peak was her fourth and fifth albums- Daydream and Butterfly.

Are you familiar with her discography?

    ReplyDelete
  96. Yes, release the album to no buzz or fanfare.

ARe you stupid? Since she released Thirsty, pre-orders have shot up. She was doing what's smart for her... obviously some people are so selfish that they can't comprehend basic things and have to have the album NOW NOW NOW.

FML. SMH. I can't express myself adequately.

    ReplyDelete
  97. Yes, those are all great idea's that would all be great directions to take her career. But Mariah for some reason is more concerened with holding titles and records like having the most number ones and stuff. Which is not important. Her overall body of work from Vision of Love to this, are so different its hard to believe the artist would sang both.
Mariah doing a residency would be grand, I know I would be on the first fight to Vegas. But she dosent have the vocal stamina for that. It would be TOTALLY lipped. I know Celine lipped some of her parts to a live recordings but, there was still some actual live singing included.
Jazz would be great for Mariah, she is naturally melodic, which I think people often overlook, but can be heard in the details of her vocals and music.
A contemporary adult album would be great for her as Toni/Babyface. I would like to she teamed up with Brian McKnight who is has multi octives it could be great.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Sorry...not Mariah's best. However, it is very 'Emancipation of Mimi'-esque, seeing as it at least HAS character to it (unlike her last two non-Christmas albums...'cause that Christmas album was the SHIT). She's proved that she can still pull a high G out of somewhere, and her voice sounds more solid than it did on 'Memoirs'.
That said, those lyrics...make my little ears bleed. Because for someone who's used to hearing the damn-near poetic lyrics of my favourite pop-punk acts, these were...words...ow...

    ReplyDelete
  99. LOL Well now, that would depend on what commands one's respect now wouldn't it?
In my case, expertise, depth of knowledge, longevity generate more respect from me than "getting by" does. Which means that yes, generally speaking certain types of music are in my eyes more respectable than others as they won't let an artist "get by" with minimal amounts of the aforementioned the way certain other types do.

HOWEVER...in this case my remark didn't go to the genre but to the artist. The lipping, the not taking care of her one instrument, the not adequately responding to her present limitations, the fact that she generally seems to not care all that much about music in itself...these all went to diminishing the respect I had for Mariah before I was aware of these things being the case.

And I wasn't aware of those because I , until I started frequenting this blog, only knew the Mariah of the first two albums.
I bought the first because I loved her voice and style. Found out I didn't like most of her material. Second album same deal. I therefor focused on people whose voice AND material I liked instead. Mariah , for me,fell by the wayside so to speak.

I also find her to be lacking in general musical development due to all that. I get the impression any changes in her music are only generated by a changing market. Not by any musical or just life development in Mariah.(which is one of the reasons I get the impression she doesn't really care all that much for music generally).

    ReplyDelete
  100. I can't help but agree about the part referring to Mariah's lack of care for music. She has this debonair attitude that bothers me and it seems like she goes with whatever her marketing team thinks will sell. Sure she had a great voice, and frankly still does despite the deterioration, it's just that a voice can only get you so far. You can be the best singer in the world to my ears but have musical content that leaves so much to be desired. There is nothing better than the feeling of a cohesive album with a story...

This is a song that I love simply for its lyrical simplicity and the story it paints on top of a few other things such as the voice behind it and the fact that this is truly an anthem for those who had "no way out"... I know you're not the biggest fan of Jazmine Sullivan, but as a girl from Phily who's had her fair share of pain and heartache, she has this ability to capture what's around her and place it in a song, and for me, it has tons of conviction. LOL, I won't go into too much about the domestic violence the song is "condoning" but every woman in my life that I know that has been through something along the lines of this tend to have a little smile on their face when this song is played... LMAOOO.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a9EYGHmBjvA

Also, are there any songs you know that paint a vivid picture and tell a deep story by emphasizing the simplistic lyrics? I don't know if that's your style of listening but I'm open to songs that can paint a gruesome story LOL. (IDK what is wrong with me at the moment)

    ReplyDelete
  101. That guy (Primo) tends to be quite an offensive guy if he perceives something as an insult to the singers he likes, yet he's the first in line to bash many, many singers and their fans.

If a certain singer has a bad technique and is getting a lot of praise from people who don't give a single shit about technique, Primo will just jump at them and insult like a savage man, quote: "your opinion about my singing is worth less than nothing :) so you can shove it where your daddy molested you.". I'm disgusted. What a savage man.

    ReplyDelete
  102. I so hope she's smart and she thinks more about her voice and how far it will carry her than making decisions that will advance her career for just a year or so :( She has SO much potential. She was seeing a coach and I hope when the SA tour is done she goes back even if she's still gonna be off touring again

    ReplyDelete
  103. Generally speaking..yes. :-)
But I really meant music itself. Not song content.

OF COURSE that is my kind of listening! Why do you think I am into the kind of music I am. I don't use music as background (I prefer silence as background. I always sit and truly listen.
Gruesome stories?...that ain't nothing new for a Bluegrass fan.
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lgzIXeI1OyU

As for Jazmine, I see your point there. Not my kind of song (I am having some issues with the protagonists world view there. I mean, the mother (friend?) says come over here and she prefers to kill instead?) but it paints a story in the mind's eye.

And I became a fan recently of Brandy Clark because she is a master of painting vivid stories in "simple" lyrics.

As for what's "wrong" with you? I don't know but I am liking it. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  105. @Black Robin how about this one? A love song with not very simple (as in obvious) lyrics.
I think that is a great love song because of the poetry of the words, the not obvious angle and because it paints a very vivid picture. But brilliantly, the person it paints will be different for everyone yet the same things are applicable to each.

  106. I listened to all three. I like them all but I envy the Wind and Pray to Jesus are two songs I must download!!!! I can relate to Pray to Jesus. But back to I envy the wind... I envy the song writing skills of the person who wrote it. I tried going the sensual route and haven't given up but my first attempt to write a sensual song left me in a self conscious tailspin of constantly re-reading and self doubt. But songs that emphasize sensuality make me just wanna close my eyes and visualize... In fact, I'm gonna do this... LOL... I envy the wind is a stellar song!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  107. I know the issue. From personal experience I've seen domestic issues take that turn and it ends bad for both (Not to the point of murder but to the point that someone is going to jail). I just hate that people get to the point that the only way out they can see is homicide as with this song. But when Jazmine said she "can't come home," I understand. It's like a sense of panic, when someone controlling looms over you and you can't think logically, and all you want is out the quickest way possible. In my case, I've seen the quickest way out done with a good old fashion cast iron skillet, a crazy ass Grandma and a 1998 Chevy Malibu.

But I also see your point LOL. If she can call a ten digit number to inform her mother that she got hit by her abusive boyfriend, she can sure ass hell call a three digit emergency line to tell the cops. And the fact that she was thinking about all the women who get abused and figured that one bullet in one man who didn't abuse the other women was somehow justification for all those other women makes me wonder where her head was when she wrote that verse. LMAO... Maybe she's saying she took one for the team and just stood up to the dude slapping her around, and is somehow telling women it is alright to stand up to your man...just don't go out the way I did... But... You know what let me stop... I always do this, think to hard on simple stuff LOL.

  108. i really don't agree that generally Mariah doesn't care about music, that's just atrocious. She works on the studio all the time and she has been talking about on how she is truly committed on making music. Recently she did say that she wanted this new album to be a body of work or something like that so fans can really enjoy it. If you listen enough, Mariah has always been a standout because of her vocal styling. I personally think it is her greatest aspect. Her style is just different from anyone and often times, imitated. I do agree Mariah seems to try hard getting the younger crowds attetion. Having said that, in the end of the day, she needs to be commercially successful and the kids are like pots of gold. Still i won't hold on that thought that she doesn't care since i think #beautiful was beautiful(LOL) song --bar the video of course-- and we still haven't gotten the full the album and this going to be her most recent release in 4 years

    ReplyDelete
  109. Well, Lucinda IS considered by many to be one of the best song writers around. So keep that in mind when you start comparing. As the fact that you are a beginner compared to her many years of experience.
Even so, I am pretty sure she too still is often left self consciously and full of self doubt.

I too can relate to Pray to Jezus in many ways. That is why that is also a great song. It speaks to people of a certain socio economic class and it doesn't matter if that is an African-American kid in the US or a Caucasian woman in The Netherlands.

Anyway, very glad you enjoyed the songs. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  110. No, I am not going to stop you doing that. I think it's great that you are thinking so hard. :-)

And I can see all that. I just meant that I listen to a song like this from the "I" perspective and I am just a very different type.
I can intellectually understand the thinking in the song but it just, emotionally speaking, leads my mind into thinking of the many different ways to change the situation she is in. Just like you now did.
Instead of just feeling along with the protagonist.

    ReplyDelete
  111. LOL "just" realized..that was a very enthusiastic use of the word "just". Sorry about that! ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  112. Oooooh OK!!! I see now. LOL, but it was fine the way it was. I really like songs that can capture the initial reaction, that "emotional", "I'm gonna hurt you" type reaction. She as a song called "Windows" where she ruins her exes car but after the initial high of busting the windows out the car, she feels incomplete and makes the realization that it did nothing to remove her hurt. Plus she was like 20/21 years old writing these crazy ass songs so I applaud her for being able to capture her youth in her lyrics LOL.

Also, ever since I started over on my EP, I changed up my writing style some. I got two songs that take me down the sensual route, one more than the other and I'd love to get some advice on both sets of lyrics (haven't gotten a chance to record them yet).

    ReplyDelete
  113. Talking about caring is not the same as actually caring Joshy.
And I am sure she cares to work hard on her own albums so as to do well in the market place. But that is not caring for music, that is more caring about not losing face. ;-)

I mean that I do not get the impression outside of her own albums doing well, she cares much for music.

And btw I would say, woman has amassed plenty of money, I am sure, to live well enough for the rest of her life. It wouldn't cause any hardship if she would make an album which sells okay but not massively.
But that DOES go to what I mean. If you look for instance at Bluegrass, you find loads of musicians with awesome skills who nevertheless choose to get into a genre where 10.000 albums sold means you are a huge hit. Because they care more about music than about making millions. They are just happy they can carve a living out of their greatest joy..making music.
And there are people like that in every genre btw. These are the kind of people you will also hear talk enthusiastically about other artists or some song that kept them obsessed for days. That know more songs than just their own material.
The kind of people you will see having fun on stage listening to each other. You see them respond to a nice lick b a fellow artist on stage, you see them exchanging smiles of enjoyment with each other etc etc etc.

Going to use my own favorites here as an example...pay attention to all the people on that stage and how they are relating to each other during the performance!

    ReplyDelete
  114. Well, then share! :-)

As for the theme of "i;m gonna hurt you" type of reaction, here's another one by Brandy describing more my kind of thinking as in weighing my options and the consequences I mean. Can't say I care enough about fashion to let it stop me lol.

  115. I love the song!!!! It is witty and sassy!!!! Like I need to incorporate some of that into my style!!!!

First song is called All I need. (Since it is a more sensual approach, I made it the last song on my EP for fear of it being the weakest.

"I generally don't bring up old things
but something you said's been bothering me
    don't worry it's not a fight
I just recalled you said you can change my mind
on what it means to be married
    to be wed for eternity
    well...surprise, surprise
you said all you need was time

You held me tight and I squeezed and squirmed
afraid to love you, afraid to learn
    It wasn't something I though I could
Invest in, engorge in, become understood

you sat me down and told me to open up
    I couldn't be loved if I couldn't trust
it was hard to swallow, hard to adjust
but there was nothing I wanted more than love

and all I need was you (MX)

you said nothing's getting in between
the love we made, its burning
Well I'm sorry, for what I've done
searching for faults to hold us up
I was overwhelmed by the affection
The love was strong, it truly was
A love forged from dirt and dust
you've changed it all, my infatuation....

You held me tight and I squeezed and squirmed
afraid to love you, afraid to learn
    It wasn't something I though I could
Invest in, engorge in, become understood

you sat me down and told me to open up
    I couldn't be loved if I couldn't trust
it was hard to swallow, hard to adjust
but there was nothing I wanted more than love

and all I need was you (MX)"

(Still not quite finished with that song but the last part I'm gonna write is about how love is a fluid feeling hence the part about being engorged incase it made little sense)

    Second song.

"There's a place where we can go
    where we can be alone
    that few people know
    it's down the road

    past the mill on 94'
take a left past the old store
    on the dirt road detour
    meet me behind the barn

the backseat is where we play
for kicks and swells let's get it bae...
the backseat is were we lay
like it's our last time make it break

    Embody your inner freak
    embody it... (Mx)

The places you put your teeth
    it's pleasing me
    scraping and scratching
    you're such a tease

    You make want get nasty
your touch is simply melting me
You're too dressed up to get filthy
It's intense it's too damn dirty

The backseat is where we play
for kicks and swells lets get it bae
the backseat is where we lay
like it's our last time make it break

    Embody your inner freak
    Embody it... (MX)"

I tried hard with these songs but I made sure they felt natural when writing (I don't write songs anymore unless it feels natural or when a particular mood hits me to write it) them. These lyrics came fast when the "spirit" hit me to write both of them. LOL, they are honest attempts that I don't think are my best pieces of lyrics but I'm a little proud of them. I'm covering new ground atleast LOL.

  118. The song is messy and the instruments sound so brassy and harsh. She sounds good but the song itself isn't that good. It sounds like something Bey or Kelly would sing tbh. I don't really like it. Not even the subject matter that bothers me its more the instruments...

Thank you for your comment. Yes, I think in that matter is an issue of personal opinion. Sure, a trained voice sounds different than an untrained voice the same way ballet dancer will move different than someone who just dances for fun. But it's not necessarily a "bad" thing. I mean, pop is already pretty generic as it is, so, having a sound that is "off" can be a cool thing. Sometimes it's just an acquired taste.

    ReplyDelete
  126. Primo Uomo Assoluto15 May 2014 at 18:01

I didn't say you put singers down for having a good technique. Did I? Nope, look up what I actually said. I said you put down technically great singers and exalt technically mediocre singers based entirely on your personal preference. Is that not true?

    ReplyDelete
  127. Primo Uomo Assoluto15 May 2014 at 18:02

  129. That is not hypocrisy Boo, that is discrimination. :-)

    ReplyDelete
  130. Again, not hypocrisy Boo. You really need to look that one up.
What you do is lying, what I do is be suspicious of you based on past experience with you.

    ReplyDelete
  131. Another logical fallacy of you.
One can perfectly well defend one's personal opinion in a rational manner. Especially easily so when one came to that opinion in a rational manner in the first place.
(taste Boo, is another matter of course as far as in how it is reached but can nevertheless also be argued in a rational manner)
(And when I say one I mean in general. You of course have already demonstrated you find that quite the impossible task. You feel compelled to go off the deep end instead. )

    ReplyDelete
  132. No it is not true. That, you see, suggests I put down their technical ability. I do not.
It also suggests I exalt some singer's technical ability to above where it actually is. I do not.
I simply do not like some singers EVEN THOUGH they are technically excellent.
And I like some singers EVEN THOUGH they are technically mediocre.

Which is no different than you liking a certain type of singer more than other types because they don't have that "Goddess" like look or style you like. Even if they have equal technical ability.

Now to then criticize me for having preferences unconnected to technical ability as well, now THAT Boo, THAT is called "hypocrisy"! :-)

This whole Christina Aguilera's scenario is going to happened again, sadly. I honestly think that she won't go to see a vocal coach because of, well... She's touring, and she had just released a new single. I don't think she'll have the time. But also, She has done singing for 3 years now. I think it will be a lot healthier for her to focus on acting and let her voice have some rest.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Thing is though that she isn't really chasing any trends...this style of music doesn't sell on pop charts. If she wanted to chase trends she'd be collaborating with dance producers like Zedd.

    ReplyDelete
  136. That's what I always hear Black Robin, for the true songwriter inspiration can be found in just about anything.

I like humble but only if it comes from inner strength. Not if it's the subservient kind. If you know what I mean?

But I also like her because this is an out lesbian. And the Shane MacNally she mentions who is also one of the presently most successful songwriters in Nashville is out as well.
I think it's pretty cool that two of the most successful songwriters in Nashville today, as well as one of the more successful producers/songwriters (Darrel Brown) are all out gays. That is pretty awesome in my book (more so than a drag act winning the ESC tbh ;-D )

    ReplyDelete

  143. I mean, It's not like she doesnt know that something is wrong with her voice. but she's so determined to keep working and get to the sucess point she wants to be at. after the DEMI era is over, she will most likely stop touring and performing as much, and start focusing on her next album, in which case her voice would be rested with the exception of Recording for the album. the everynight, constant singing, doesnt do anyone good, and with demi's new tone and singing techinque, it definitley doesnt work for her.

Disagreements don't seem to be a problem with most members here, except for this one guy. Talk about antagonizing people. Jeez, just read the trailer trash language. I think there are very surface level issues here such as (unwarranted) superiority complex and sociopathy.

    ReplyDelete
  149. I'm going to try this more amicably:

They do have a slight point. I think your voice does have a big quality, and your resonance is great, but it can sound very classical. Why don't you try posting something a bit rockish? I'm thinking Journey songs would be a good marriage of your classical technique and edgy rock. Steve Perry has that "classical" mix.

Think of Lara Fabian and Floor Jansen; they ultimately bring all of that classical training to other genres, and it's so convincing that no one questions it.

How about a Babs song. I think your voice would go nicely with "Papa Can You Hear Me".

    ReplyDelete
  150. LOL. Well said, its precisely that.

  151. On a positive note, I was watching some videos from last year(after surgery) that I thought were great, but she's had some recent performances that blow those out of the park. I truly think she's improved a lot since then which gives me hope. She has to cut herself off on some notes because she doesn't feel confident with sustaining them. There's no way she can't know that she needs to rest and see a vocal trainer. After the milks this era, I hope she does what she needs to do because I want to see her improve more so she can hit higher notes again confidently amongst other things.

  157. I don't really understand how people haven't noticed she's improved. Example A: She was avoiding the high notes in Skyscraper for a long time, but she's recently hit them in an intimate performance...while sick. She's gaining more control and confidence. She's just not fully there because she's touring and her voice is tired. She does have some ways to go, but she's improved so it shouldn't be looked at as hopeless or like nothing has changed

  168. She's not even a Mezzo let alone a rare one. She's not a Coloratura anything. Her agility is nothing great. Very sloppy and inaccurate. Dramatic? She has a small voice. I've been listening to her recently so I could remember what it is I initially loved about her, and from what I noticed, the size of her voice actually decreased, substantially. When she pushes even a little her voice distorts. She could've been a Full Lyric, but now I'm not so sure. In fact, she's wrecking her voice, so much so that she's unable to sing in her natural soprano tessitura. Her voice is beginning to evolve into that of a Mezzo. Such a shame, her voice is giving out already and she's not even mid 20s.

  169. The next Kelly Clarkson? LOL! A similarity between Clarkson and Whitney is that both possess voices that are impervious to heavy damage. To this day Kelly's voice is still capable of doing what it could before. It's still in top shape. Demi's already losing her voice, and she's early 20s now? Calling her the next Kelly is quite a backhand to the face.

  170. Closer? There is no closer if you aren't close. Demi was never close to Whitney. Ariana? That's quite laughable. Demi isn't close to Kelly's level either, neither is Ariana. The girls suck.

  172. She could never be on Broadway with such a horrendous sound...

  174. bro chill! you seems super mad at demi.

  175. Stunned! That note though... almost no complications and full of resonance.

  176. Well...She has surgery last year, almost a full year ago, I think it was late July or something. She didn't give herself proper time for recuperation or rebuilding her voice and jumped right back into singing, basically. That added to the fact she gets sick a lot and her tonsillectomy didn't do anything to help like she had hoped. The second half of last year was really rough for her because the way it happened, sometimes she was really good, other times she was horrible. It was inconsistent and she never was that inconsistent before. I don't think she had much time for it because she had both X Factor US and Glee gigs. She did get better when she saw a vocal coach before the first leg of her NL tour, but she still wasn't as strong as she was before. She also got sick in the middle of the tour and pretty much stayed sick for most of it. Now she's been getting much more consistent than she has been in a while. She's been hitting some notes she either avoiding for a long time or just didn't sound nearly as good with. I suspect she might be seeing a vocal coach again since she's heading off on her tour again and because it sounds like she's getting even stronger now. Hopefully she is because another issue is that she started using bad vocal techniques after her surgery. It's been really rocky for Demetria :(

Watching her recent videos, her Upper-belts seem more resonant? Is it just me or do you guys think she's singing a vocal coach again because her voice is more powerful, resonant, and over all amazing!

  179. Recently, her belts have really improved, she's hitting some of the notes that she would avoid hitting at the end of the U.S Neon Lights Tour- (Skyscraper, Completing the Long note in GYHAB, etc.) I think she may be seeing a vocal coach again, or she's finally found a technique that works for her. I don't know, but either way, it's definitely a welcome change. (:

  180. She's been doing great lately! maybe she's seeing a coach again, in preparing for the DEMI World tour.

    ReplyDelete
  181. Her concert in KOKO wasn't that good, her voice sounded tired or sick.

    ReplyDelete
  182. Yeah, she said her voice was tired. It was because she was up late the night before for another performance at GAY. But aside from that, she's been doing much better and I'm glad I'm not the only one to notice. She sounds like she is seeing a vocal coach again, imo.

  183. The things I don't like about this performance is how she does "glooo-woo-wooow" and "attaaa-yaaa-yaaack" with those Ys and Ws, she's like trying to make it easy for her to hit those note cause it's lately seems like it's hard for her to hit those notes. she also stopped in the middle of the last high note which she also lately does that stop alot (not just in HA). and she's like trying too hard to make her voice sound soft and acoustically. But besides that it's actually a pretty good performance if not great! she has been improving and I hope to see her back on track soon. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Skd_CTKMgPE

  185. it's really annoys me how she started ending some notes like here in Neon Lights https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CkxxpL6RiB0 at 1:15, 3:32 she does is rough like kinda afriad of cracking idk how to call it

    ReplyDelete
  186. in 2:44 she doesn't do it tho

    ReplyDelete
  187. woah she needs to hire some new backup singers asap the present ones sound like they're getting gagged

    ReplyDelete
  188. her belts used to be so much better, they kind of like echo.

    ReplyDelete
  189. yeah and It's like they're trying to sing over her! I liked her old backup singers Shari and Kai.

  190. Foreal, and they were completely drowning her out in Give Me Love

  191. She couldn't be because her voice don't suit it. Horrendous that does not make it.

  193. Wao, the autotune in that sustained B4 is VERY noticeable....

    ReplyDelete
  194. OK, the higher belt was a bit constricted, but the first one was AMAZING. It really sound like one of her Unbroken belts!

  195. its crazy how much similar she sounds like fetus demi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmj3l8TAN0Q

  196. It sounds more like she is screaming or her volume it's too loud.

    ReplyDelete
  197. what lol i dont hear autotune...... and I know when they add autotune to performances but that is not autotune maybe its the audio quality or the recording idk
