Awarded some kind of Icon award at the 2014 Billboard Awards, Jennifer Lopez was definitely being shown some love by the chart compilers on the night.
Having this privilege bestowed on her by the venerable organisation, the Diva also got to perform not once, but TWICE at the ceremony! First with Pitbull- which I skipped over- and then by herself, where she sang new song First Love. Though not blessed with the most powerful of voices, the Diva demonstrated that she can still serve a good vocal when it's needed. I'm sure there were a fair few people out there surprised at this revelation.
Aside from the voice, this is one Diva who always looks like she loves being on stage. That goes a long way to making herself, and her performances, both likeable and watchable.
Thoughts?

Thought for a moment I was finally reading that Dolly review. ;-)
It's true for Jennifer as well though. Good performer!
She's a good performer no doubt; but that new song's live didn't really give me that rush I had with the studio version. Feels a bit bland to me honestly.
ReplyDeleteShe deserves a Vocal Range post. it's about time...
ReplyDeleteSTOP IT!! :'( I feel guilty enough! it was coming today, then all these videos were sent to me and i was like ARGHHHHHHHHHHHH
ReplyDeleteyah, she does
ReplyDeleteLOL When in doubt..first come, first serve! ;-D
ReplyDeleteAlso...no review of Miley's performance of Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds? I thought it was rather good actually (long as you ignore the wacky outfits)
ReplyDeleteI like how deep her tone is, but it kinda dragged on towards the middle for me, especially when the guy simply repeated everything. Could've used a nice psychedelic backdrop instead of whatever she was wearing
ReplyDeleteIn her career spanning decades, apparently she did everything except for taking proper signing lessons. That was excruciating to listen to.
ReplyDeletebtw, these are my favorite songs by her. That run @0.51 omg!

I personally believe that anyone who can hold a pitch can be a "good" live singer, as long as they can produce and WORK the confident vocal that's needed. Katy Perry could probably hold a note if she wanted, but for some reason she fails 99% of the time in the delivery.
ReplyDeleteWe all know J.Lo has a somewhat thin voice, even she's said it herself, but Jenny from the block can serve it up and work. And she's still dancing circles around the younger generation here, and like Iggy Azalea (and everyone in the world) said, she still hasn't aged a day.
I totally laughed out loud
ReplyDeleteI was scrolling looking for Miley's review. I liked as much as I could as I don't really care for the original song - a bit of a bored after a while and she didn't drift too far from it.
ReplyDeleteI'm usually a sucker for duets specially with male and female voices but I felt like Wayne did not pull his weight or something. Anyways, It was good. I liked it. I just probably won't repeat it.
Yeah well, looks like you can keep on scrolling looking for a review of this live performance. LOL
ReplyDeleteI did listen to it a few more times and it remained pretty decent but I have to admit I never cared for the tune itself much. Never cared much for the Beatles tbh
I think that dragging is inherent to the song.
ReplyDeleteAt least, I experience the same effect with the original. Except I liked this better because I like Miley's voice better than McCartney/Lennon's.
Tbh I liked this also because one never knows with Miley. She can be piss poor or she can give a good performance. So her doing this cover and doing it well is also a pleasant surprise..
I agree that backdrop instead of these outfits would have been more pleasing to me but these crazy outfits are of course more in Miley's style.
And seeing as it got nor review, here's the video

The outfits very much reminded me of this act actually
