ReplyDeleteWell, if I were to explain it as simply as possible:
ReplyDelete"Legato", in music and/or vocal performance, means that the notes either being sung or played are executed in a 'smooth' and 'connected' manner. The word is Italian for "tied together" to be exact.
Within vocal performance, for instance, singing a legato line can be quite difficult. I wouldn't say the respective singer has to be legitimately trained in that area in order to perform the technique properly (unless, of course, you're already classically trained) but they will need to have an instinctive musical ear, especially from a technical standpoint per say; steady breath support as well as volume and intonation control are essential as each note must 'flow/slide' seamlessly into the next. Also, their jaw must be relaxed and their tongue placed in the correct position.
As an example - try to sing a melody (twinkle, twinkle little star perhaps) on a singular vowel (A, E, I O, U). In doing so, try to sing the notes by not starting each note with a "H-" sound but, instead, sing the the song on one long, extended vowel whilst taking in subtle breaths when required.
I already own it and this duet- performance is one of my all-time favorites from her archives. Thank you regardless...

There is, absolutely, no doubt in my mind that Jazmine, should she continue honing her voice with her fruitful technique, will mature into a graceful Contralto by the time she reaches her mid- 40's +. However, by all means, the vocal transition can and may happen much earlier. All in all, her tessitura continues to slowly descend, her tonal coloring has darkened (though not dramatically) these past couple of years and her voice is starting to experience its comfortable primary & secondary passagio points at E4 & E5 respectively, similar to that of a 'Coloratura Contralto' such as Annie Lennox.

In other news, my obsession of the week is "Over the Love" by Florence + The Machine from the primarily awful, Great Gatsby soundtrack! This song, "Young and Beautiful", Emeli Sande's cover of "Crazy in Love", and Beyoncé's part of "Back to Black" are the only fitting things on the entire thing. Jay-Z could not have made a worse soundtrack if he executively produced a record for a movie about Victorian Era England. Hip-Hop, Rapping, and Electronic dance did not exist in the 1920's. But anyway yeah, "Over the Love" is incredible.

ReplyDeleteIf you're talking purely range, contraltos tend to have the largest ranges, as they have both low notes and high notes. Well developed mezzos also have larger ranges as well, for the same reasons.
Ariana's range, when examined is actually quite tiny.
Her voice disappears below F4, and is pure air by the time she's in the 3rd octave.
For the most part, she can control her belts up to G#5.
Her falsetto is very uncontrolled, even though she can reach up to G6 with it, I'd hardly count it, as she can't control it.
When you take into consideration what she can sing with resonance, and control (which is one's ACTUAL range), her voice comes out to around F#4 to E6 (Whistle isn't truly part of the voice, but if you want to count it, F#4 to E7).
Moral of this post.. No fach is greater than the other.

Good response! and Indeed, Contraltos tend to naturally have bigger ranges as well as agility. But there are very few real contraltos in pop music. I'd also say the Assoluta vocal fach is quite special, but its success depends mostly on its technique, as being a voice of such possibilities requires superior skill to be able to control it.

I think she is managed very badly, this compilation album was announced in february, and finally a single was released in late march, and the album and single went #1 in Spanish charts as pre-release, but the album comes out in May - meaning any buzz will have died out by then - and the single was only made available to purchase in Spain - making it difficult for fans to acquire it by means other than illegal downloading.

I was disappointed to find that the single didn't see at least a Europe release. Thankfully a friend in Spain gifted me the song, as I didn't want to pirate it, as I see her as an artist worth putting my coins behind.
Her upper-belting is her strong point, though she forces the volume sometimes, causing a bit of distortion in her voice.

ReplyDeleteDevonte explained it well. I think another thing could be said that many classical singers liken legato to the string on a pearl necklace. Each note is a pearl and must be clearly produced, on the center of the pitch with no slurs or slides (though passing tones are normal and allowed), but the constant stream of air of focused air that keeps the vocal line going is the legato.

It was a lady, slightly older than Jazmine Sullivan that reminded me of her. I think she's 29 and her voice was that of a low-mezzo too but I never really dove into her music. She had this "Shark in the water" song. VV Brown? Well VV, though I still think she's might be a mezzo (can't call because I don't listen to her), had a voice drop to near androgynous quality, even in the belting range. And don't the lower voices as well as dramatic voices take the most time to mature?

Well, the maturation process of ones voice depends on the singer's, overall, vocal anatomy itself. Mechanistically speaking, Cher's voice didn't mature into that of a 'Full- Lyric Contralto' until she was in her 30's; post- 1975 to be exact whereas Gladys Knight's voice has only just begun to experience it's development into that of a Contralto these past 15 years and she is now in her 60's. They were both 'Dark, Lower- Set Mezzo Soprano's' prior to their transitions. On the other hand, Patti Labelle's voice didn't mature into that of a 'Full- Dramatic Soprano' until she was in her 40's; post- 1980 to be exact, as she was a 'Full- Spinto Soprano' prior to that whereas Whitney Houston (had she taken care of her voice when in its prime) may have matured into a 'Full- Dramatic Soprano' much later in life [her mid- 50's perhaps] as her voice sat closer to the lyrical- spectrum of the Spinto sub-fach unlike Patti Labelle's whose voice was much heavier, naturally.
ReplyDeleteLet us take your voice for example, now as a 'Spinto Tenor', judging by the way you continue to highlight the ever-changing qualities of your timbre & registration points, there is a chance that you just may mature into a 'Full- Dramatic Tenor' by the time you reach your early- 30's (or your late 20's perhaps though this is very rare) however this depends on how well you take care of your voice until then nevertheless.
I think that everyone covering the same song it's gonna get a little bit boring. Why don't we choose an artist instead and then everyone chooses any song they like by him/her? That way we'll have a bit more variety. Also, we could let the winner choose the next artist (and avoid repeting if possible).

ReplyDeleteI adore Maureen McGovern. I own two of her 'Greatest Hits' albums. Although I am more a fan of her voice when she is singing within her lower and lower- mid registers, I would argue that the best attribute to her instrument is, essentially, her head voice; I can't help but revel in its agility, those staccato notes at F6 and F#6 were absolutely glorious. Nonetheless, the voice has such an even and bright tone at the top and it extends so ever- gracefully upwards.

He didn't have much of a range but that is the least important aspect of a singers voice in my opinion. Akin to Maureen, musically speaking, his use of legato was stunning as was his diction, phrasing and intonation; a beautiful, masculine, Baritone voice that blossomed in its lower regions.

I Have Nothing/ I think there are like 2 modulations, not entirely certain, but there's definitely a modulation in it, and modulations are always a bit tough to confront.
1) "Didn't We Almost Have It all": In addition to the respective singer needing to maintain both strength & stamina throughout the songs climatic conclusions, the melody continuously switches back and forth between two keys and requires the singer to keep a steady, balanced vocal line whilst alternating from soft ‘lyric’ passages to long, ‘dramatic’ phrases. All in all, an exceptional amount of power and breath support is obliged should somebody want to do this song any form of worthy justice.
ReplyDelete2) "Run to You": Fundamentally, it’s the seamless transitions between head-to-chest/chest-to-head voice on this song that is spectacular. The ‘bridge’, indefinitely, is the most difficult part of the song altogether; aside from the, almost, mathematical melisma she displayed there, once again, an exceptional amount of breath support is compulsory.
3) "I’m Your Baby Tonight": This song is, without a doubt, Whitney’s most challenging Up-Tempo song. It explores her upper- chest register much more significantly than any other song in her entire discography overall. The song is exceedingly rhythmic and withholds very large intervals and prominent key changes throughout thus requiring pristine- pitch precision and breath control if to be executed and sustained properly. The 'bridge' and 'breakdown', towards the end of the song, are sung between ‘F5 – G#5’ at an extremely fast pace, in a chest-dominant mix also.

ReplyDeleteI really hate mine... Well, get frustrated with it because I have the biggest ups and downs... yesterday, I had no lower register, and my voice was way lighter than normal. Today, my voice is thicker with my lower register being consistent down to C2 and even A#1. My upper chest quality stays the same though I would rather call my middle region from A#3-A#4 my strong suit these days rather than back in November when the 5th octave was my strong suit. I just find it ungainly that I can go from ridiculously heavy chest resonance, to light androgynous head resonance so easily on a regular basis and some times to the point that I can't help it (yesterday being a prime example). Its like I can't find where I want my voice to be artistically and it makes me feel rather karaoke. I see singers like Beyonce who belt with tonal homogeneity all the time, but it often comes off as I'm darkening my voice to achieve a sound but in actuality I'm lightening it and the darkness is kinda coming through. I went through a phase of singing with the weight my voice tended to want to carry up into the 4th and 5th octave and though I had no issue hitting the notes, phrasing was rather difficult... It was like this... my voice dropped around February and I spent all of March relearning how to work my voice and I'm not liking the results (Maybe I should have stated that first rather than rambling so madly). Now, I learned how to sing with head resonance and strip all the weight from my upper register and phrase incredibly fluidly up to F#5/G5 with not much issue, and as a result...my mix has become much rounder. My issue is that the sound produced from that is small when I know my sound production in this region can get large, the sounding there is terrible to my ears though very technically sound, and the finding the balance between chest dominance and head dominance. Despite the light sound production, it retains its chest dominance which I find...weird... My rasp is very light there but when I go for head dominance, the rasp just comes screeching back and it sounds like the struggle when listen to play back but I don't really feel the rasp LOL. All and all, I find my voice to be big, fat, sloppy, and ungainly.... I wouldn't have an issue if my sound was consistent from one day to the next, but I got a feeling that tomorrow...I'll be back to the ridiculously high tenor tessitura versus today where I'm pushing A2-G4...

ReplyDeleteI've always wanted to know what Toni's sister Towanda's classification is. A lot of people think she has a lower register then Toni. Pretty sure she sings a C3 on Get Away Jordan in St. Lucia at 0:16 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lFilLONe7Rg. ReplyDeleteI don't think she's a dramatic contralto. In fact, her head voice and mix can take her to a very feminine sound. Only her lower notes are androgynous. Dramatic Contraltos are very rare, and if you didn't know, you'd probably think you were listening to a tenor, or even a baritone in their lowest extremes.:

Towanda and Toni are both in the contraltos range. Tony having the ability to reach lower an higher tho...
ReplyDeleteYou think so? From what I've heard from the Braxton's album and live I believe Towanda can sing just as low and higher than Toni. Could be wrong though.
ReplyDeleteOMG.... His tonal uniformity across the board is soooooooooo stellar... I mean it is soooo to die for... like I'm legitimately jealous. He is such a leggiero because his voice keeps the same eerie color from bottom to top. Like I'm so shocked....the second Leggiero tenor I've heard in pop. His also has a rare vocal trait in men these days...masculinity...
ReplyDeleteNow back to Jazmine...her upper chest register has improved. The ending actually had belts with head resonance and the power had me jolting from the insides. I'm too lazy to pitch her highest note but I think she went up to E5-F5 a few times. And she stooped down to A2 here???? The lowest she went in the studio was Ab2 on her song "How Many Licks". Every time I let my friends hear that, they're like "I didn't know Trey Songs could sing that low" and I just look at them sideways. And she finally got some good back up singers this time!!! Her comeback is gonna be so on point. I think if she learns how to mix her lower register with a strong fry with a little nasality for darkness she might can stoop down to Gb2 or even a whole F2. However, vocal color always throws my pitching ability LOL.
