Amber Riley Performs "Colorblind" @ The Queen Latifah Show

Amber Riley is pushing the music career- a smart move considering the trajectory of Glee- enlisting Emeli Sande and Claude Kelly to pen her a hit that will hopefully see her climb the charts and punch Billboard squarely in the throat.

Taking this new creation, the ballad Colorblind, to The Queen Latifah Show, the Diva gave a sterling, if understated, performance. Despite the track being amiable enough, it didn't quite scream "hit record". Something not Amber's fault; I think any singer would be fighting an uphill battle trying to get this slow burner to chart high.

Colourblind would have been more suited to an angsty Glee episode. But maybe that's the point: not to alienate the Diva's current market. Probably a smart move, all things considered. Wouldn't want scores of Gleeks offside....

[Note: Apparently the song IS going to appear in Glee, so that explains that.]

  1. I think her choice of writers can be a winner, that with the benefit of already her having a solid fan base. I see staying power

  2. It's a beautiful song, and it's not radio-friendly, but it's definitely a grower when you let it sink in and grab you in. She sounded the tiniest bit out-of-breath or maybe nervous in the performance, but she didn't let it show and she still sounded great.

  3. I really like the song, although, as said here, I don't see it as charting material considering the taste nowadays. I must say, though, that I know I would have prefered Lea, Naya or even Diana to sing it more than Amber...

  4. I am 100% sure this is not going to be a hit. Way too slow and generic.
Also really did not like this singer. Her tone irks me.

  5. This song is so plain and really boring to me. Your debut song should always be the strongest to achieve success but i guess that will be elusive on her. Anyway her performance was good not great but good. i think there was something off her or something but still i recognize her talent

  6. The song is quite lovely, to be honest. The sentiment is very powerful, very moving. I feel as though a song of this fashion is moreso designated for a Bigger Voice as this is, to me, a power ballad. I did like the subtle approach but at the same time it was too subtle, and there are certain choices she made that would've better been sufficed if sung a little more outward. The song has many dynamics & when sung in such 2-D manner it makes it anti-climatic. Honestly, I'd love to hear a voice like Bruno Mars tackle this song. Anastacia even. This song is definitely worthy of charting well, but vocally it's far too stagnant. The composition presents a big climax & naturally lends itself to those bigger moments. When sung as subtly as it was here it was, at best, underwhelming.
Honestly can't wait for a true Dynamic singer to take this song head on. As much as it pains me to say it, and it really does, Beyonce would've slayed this song.

  7. As much as it pains me to say this, the song would fit Jessie J, Beyonce (As Dat Ninja suggested), or Emeli herself better than Amber. Yes, vocally, Amber is a monster but she made the same mistake that most debut artists make, the single choice. The single should be up to date. If you want success, debut a poppy song, something that moves, but at the same time still wow us with your vocals. Then, after you've acquired the success, debut another single that is completely different from the first. I just don't think this song is going to be a chart-topper. I so wish I would later eat my own words because I love Amber's voice so much!
