Pink Stuns With "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" Performance @ 2014 Oscars

When I heard Pink was performing at the 2014 Oscar Awards, I did wonder why. However, it wasn't any of her own material that the rocker was bringing to the stage. Instead Pink's talented pipes had been called on to cover the iconic Somewhere Over the Rainbow in honor of 75 years since the Wizard of Oz's release.

Needless to say, she SMASHED It. The rendition was perfectly simple- in staging- allowing for the montage honoring the film to be beautifully scored by the performance. I'm sure there will be those who find fault in the harsher tone Pink's vocal brought, especially when compared to Judy Garland's voice, but I really enjoyed hearing her sing it. Her vibrato was a definite revelation!

The ruby dress was a nice touch, too!

Thoughts?

  1. pink Is amazing as usual. but are we not gonna talk about Idina Menzel screaming "let it Go"? It wasn't awful but her voice cracked at the end...

  5. Dammit Sasuke... Anyways yeah i was especially surprised at the performance. Idinal looked kindof nervous and idk if it was because of the pace or just jitters but either way it really messed her up. she had a lot of tension at the end.

  8. She was either ill or incredibly nervous (ironically) because I, simply, couldn't bare to watch this performance. It was written all over her face, towards the end of the song, that she wasn't very fond of the vocals she had given either and was glad it was over; the orchestra were playing far too fast which disrupted her timing - I'm surprised she even had time to breathe because her throat was full of constriction, hence the cracked (Eb5) "high note". Poor Girl...

  9. I have always been a fond of Idina but this performance was just bad. I believe she wasn't sure of herself either when the camera catch her eyes while she was singing. I really hope she can perform another better live version of this song. Love the power and the meaning of the song.

  10. Also, I don't know what Bette Mindler was doing. Her performance was kinda boring.

  12. That was a beautiful cover. I could have done without the last big note, but in general it was really great to watch ^^

Meh - soneone else could have done it better.

  15. Om my, that last note was one of the absolute *worst* cracks I have heard in a long, LONG time. Here is an otherwise great technical singer falling apart, beginning to end. And people give XTina a hard time. I guess no one is untouchable. Idina totally face-planted with this.

All bitched, her voice sounds almost 100% similar to the studio version, which is a good thing.

  16. LOL To both of you as Crystal and I already discussed both those Oscar performances in another thread earlier. ;-)

  17. I think there has been some deliberate messing with the audio on both Oscar videos. I would guess that might have been done to avoid being taken off the way all other videos are immediately removed.

Didn't know this singer but it sounded awful to my ears. But that was not I think due to the audio quality as Pink DID sound good.

  18. It was good but I think it also showed some "weaknesses" which make Pink a rock singer rather than a torch song type of singer.
But I did love her rendition of such a classic.

I agree with Opie Ever2, this cover show her weakness and also her talent. Weakness because it shows how oddly is for Pink to sing this type of songs. But at the same time, she kept on singing even if it wasn't her usual style. And rock it! But this is not my favorite rendition of this song, but is a good one.

I think she was just really nervous and probably upset that John Travolta messed up her name. She was rushing and the final note was really strained. More often than not, she is a solid performer.

I think Pink sang well, but her phrasing was not elegant compared to Judy Garland, Caterina Valente, Eva Cassidy, Linda Eder, etc who have sung this song before. It was very choppy, cutting the phrase in awkward places. Why can't most modern singers apply legato nowadays?

  23. Idina became popular for her performances in Rent and Wicked, back in the early 2000s.
She's a capable singer, especially during the time of Wicked.
Here she sounds quite lovely imo http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FlMBcTGJ4YM
I don't know what's going on in this Academy performance though.

Judy was queen of legato singing, she wouldn't be proud at that choppy ass phrasing

Your attempt at defending Christina's constant and far worst mess ups is the cherry on top of your poor musical taste. I still remember you calling Renee Fleming a "sub-par" singer.

  26. Yes. It was the phrasing that was the main issue for me. It felt to me also as not so much pure choice but also part necessity. Which is what I meant with showing her weaknesses.
But...that is one of my "feelings". ;-)
I am not sure if her technical ability is indeed not up to a more "elegant" choice?

  27. I hope she gives another, better live performance of this song. I really like it. If you are feeling bad about this performance Idina, I have a few few words of advice for you. Let it go ( I HAD to).

  28. I tried to listen to this but the combination of her voice with standard modern Broadway, style making it a combination of two things which really really don't seem to be working for me....well, I am afraid I couldn't get through this.
But if you say her technique is better than the Oscar performance would lead one to believe,I will absolutely take your word for it Seren. :-)

  29. And once again, here you are... BITCHING about somebody else's musical tastes!

Sorry bitch, as much as you wanna get with me by following me around like a stray dog, I have standards. Stick your hand up your ass and try to find all the fucks I don't give about you or your equally basic friends.

As much as I dislike Pink's general aesthetics, I think she is a very capable technical singer, for the most part. But technique and style are two different things, and her style is not "elegant" when compared to singers of the past (or few in recent times) who knew how to sing with endless legato line. And thus, that style of phrasing doesn't do justice to this type of song. She was singing like "Some. Where. Ov.Ever the rainbow. Way. Up-high. There's. A-land..."

    Poor Idina :/

I wouldn't say she is a great technician; she often runs out of air on long held notes. But she is much, much, MUCH better than that performance at the Oscars showed.

  34. As long as I got the 1st comment it's all good lol

  35. Whoa, that's some heavy shade there haha. Anyway, I really liked the performance, weirdly. I don't know, when one messes up the way Idina did I couldn't help but become that more indulged. I guess I find it very endearing when one gets wrapped up in their nerves. It makes themmore tangible, if that makes sense. The perfectionists (super technical in their heads) just seem so extra terrestrial and it seems less humane. I don't know, I'm weird lol But I liked the performance even more. The Eb5 wasn't great but so what, you know?

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well, then in this thread things are good for you. :-)

  37. LOL I know Seren to equal your knowledge on music theory. I wasn't joking or being sarcastic. I really will take his word for such matters. Much like I do yours.

  38. I think though, her abilities best suit other genres than the one this song belongs to. And that her abilities are not up to do justice to this genre in general.
But like I say, I liked this performance in spite of that unelegant phrasing. And in what Pink "naturally" does, she is absolutely awesome!
