Ellie Goulding whispers Along To "I Need Your Love" and "Burn" @ 2014 Brit Awards

Ellie Goulding brits 2014

Ellie, Ellie, Ellie Goulding. You are my imaginary friend, but I can't condone your live vocals at the 2014 Brit Awards. The airy tone I like. In fact it's something I really enjoy about your impish voice. What isn't great is how weak and ghostly the overall quality of your voice sounded during this I Need Your Love/Burn medley.

It's clear that you can project, because the little exclamations that dotted the performance had some substance to them. It just seems that weight doesn't carry into the falsetto-y type singing that most of this performance consisted of. I think doing this might also be contributing to the problem.

I'll tell you what, though: the drum playing and grinding was getting a lot of guys (and a few girls) hot and bothered on Twitter yesterday. What relevance that has to anything I've written, who knows! Just thought it was worth mentioning.....

Thoughts?

  1. And, as per usual, she sounded a DAMN MESS.

Has she ever proven herself worthy when performing a live, up-tempo number?

  2. Well, there isn't much I expect of her when she's performing live; her vocal are neither here nor there. She is a very talented musician nonetheless and her voice, though an acquired taste, stands on its own.

I actually like her style. It's a small sound, but it's lovely and interesting in my opinion. The fragility of the sound reminds me of Bjork and Mylene Farmer.

It wasn't nearly as bad as you make it out to be. Of course, she is rarely on center of pitch, but it is not so horrible that she should be banned for life. There's potential.

  5. LOL First few seconds I thought she was singing in one of the Scandinavian languages or maybe Icelandic. In fact, sounded like that most of the time.
I am far from an Ellie fan but thought this didn't sound all that bad actually.

Still amazed though how a little basic instrumental skill seems to get people all "hot and bothered" but extensive instrumental skill leaves them pretty much the opposite.
Now THIS is drumming to get "hot and bothered" about... ;-)

  6. LOL. I agree that there may be "potential" but I rarely ever see it when she's performing a live, up-tempo number. Her acoustic performances on the other hand are a different story; she often sounds good on them. Nonetheless, she needs to take her voice more seriously - her live performances are just outright embarrassing more often than not.

  7. I just wish that her voice would become a bit more resonant...

Sometimes she delivers a decent and to me, I think that this is one of her not-so-decent ones.

  8. Uhhh... the vocals are usual... I rather liked the witch theme on the grammy's more.

The choreography was a bit sloppy and around 2:10 she looks so hella funny! Like she was having a mini-stroke or something.

The only thing I liked from this performance is the sexy male dancers. Dang I wanna get me some of those ;D LOL

  9. So much money and time put into productions for an artist who simply cannot pull them off. When the production is doing the entertaining as opposed to the entertainer, there's a problem.

  10. I love me some Ellie. Do you really expect more from the world's most relevant whisper singer DD? lol. I also love the tone produced by her voice as she sings. I just worry for her longevity. That style of singing can lead to some weird issues.

  11. I LOVE THIS PERFORMANCE!!!

Ironically, I was watching it earlier today. I've been drumming for 7 years now (I'm 21) & am turning professional very soon thus, I always wach this clip for clear inspiration. LOL.

  12. I loveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Ellie's timbre. It's so seducing and unique honestly. I wouldn't mind her singing me to sleep everynight lol.The performance started out pretty strong, but as soon as she started moving more, she began losing resonance and intonation. You also gotta adore that little drumming action she adds into the act.

  13. It wasn't horrible, but it wasn't bad. Just meh. There was no real energy..honestly, she looked sorta bored on stage. If she would just get some vocal training, she wouldn't half bad.

  14. I've made it black for now, let me know what colour you were thinking of !

  15. Yeah, she loves Bjork, and it shows in some of her songs, I like the airiness in my opinion, it sounds a lot more sweet than the airiness of Selena Gomez's live performances...

  16. I just realised that I only saw the second half of this performance on
the night!! LOL. I Just by chance replayed the video now and was like, "did
I embed the wrong clip? I don't remember her having a guitar!". She definitely sounded better in the first half! Also, I should say, she sounded a million times better (live) than when I saw her at "chime for change".

  17. I liked for the gif XD

  18. I definitely like her voice, and I see your comment below, I agree she sounds much better acoustic without the big production and beats. But I didn't mind at all, no one expects Ellie to roar out any Beyonce notes soon, but she stayed on top of it, and I think this is "strong" for her. I definitely think her Halcyon Days rerelease was a step back, but Burn still sounds a lot better coming from her than Leona Lewis.

  19. If we're not getting into voice here... her energy was down, as I feel it has been. She seems sleepy almost, I think the neon Pharoh thing isn't looking really cute either, it's been done so many times and she's not pulling it off with her half sleep-walked moves. I'd take an inflexible witch over this any day.

  20. I really liked this performance. The vocals, they could be better but what sets Katy apart from other mainstream singers is that her voice actually possesses power. The vocals, I actually liked and since Dark Horse is in her vocal range, it sounds quite nice. The last note that she tried to go for? Not so much.

  21. In all honesty the black seems perfect to me! :p

  22. Am I the only one who can't stand this girl's voice?

  23. how this woman is famous and has the number one song on the charts right now baffles me
proves that talent mean SHIT when it comes to being famous
this doesnt even deserve a post there are much more deserving divas that should be posted about

i know im coming off as mean but it really bothers me that someone as vocally untalented as katy is who is ruling the pop landscape right now

the grammys was already a vocal mess but atleast it was somewhat palatable

    ReplyDelete
  24. Probably not, but it's understandable. More of an acquired taste than anything.

  25. LOL You are setting the bar high Devonte.
imo...that's the way to go. Best of luck to you! :-)

I'm starting to think Gaga and Katy rip off my visual ideas through remote viewing, LOL
Anyway. I think Katy's visuals are quite fun, but the execution and "story line" of the videos is like a cartoon for mentally challenged children.

  27. I need your love sounded pretty good to me imo. Burn sounded weak at some points. But I don't really like that song anyway so whatever.

  28. I love Ellie Goulding!!!

  29. Im impressed actually, i think she pulled this off.. cant believe i said that.

  30. she looked great and the vocals werent a complete mess
katy perry deserves way more shit for her horrid performance of dark horse

ellie has never really been an amazing live singer but i feel as though everything other than the chorus to burn was fine

  31. theyre fun if you're ten years old

  32. Ellie's voice is heaven to my ears. And she seems to get better with every live performance.

More power to her. There's no one quite like her.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I can't stand her, her voice or her songs.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Yeah, I've heard her sing far worse when you just wish she lipped it (even though the studio versions aren't great either)

I'm in tears at this news. I was so hoping she wouldn't follow Eva Cassidy into the grave. Well done her doctors!!!

Sonny do you think she has the range of Elina Garanca, the premier operatic Mezzo in the world today? I think Ana might have a wider range even.

I would agree I heard at least three octaves on that seven minute compilation.

  39. Is it just me or does she sometimes sound like she's gargling while singing? Don't get me wrong, I love it. Just think it's funny lol

  41. When hearing this woman's voice ascend like that, you understand why people like Christina Aguilera want that dark, cavernous, yet biting contralto tone. The weight it carries and the timbre are just electrifying. I don't think I care for much of this woman's music, but the tone and power are out of this world.

    ReplyDelete
  42. She's a Mezzo Soprano, not a Contralto. Nothing androgynous about her tone what so ever. As for Kelly? No, nothing similar about their voices. Her Soprano equivalent would more so be Jessie than Kelly, not that she is though lol

  43. I know right. It's just so new have you heard the A5 she belted live oh god I died.
