[Free For All Friday]

FREE FOR ALL FRIDAY TIME! First of the new year, no less. Now I am more than ready to be DRAGGED for the site layout in the comments, but perhaps we can restrict it to one thread? That way it's more likely I'll find them! (.....I think I'm ready for this......lol.)

If you don't know the score, here be the rules:
  • Try not to get too perverted-this site still needs to basically be "safe for work".
  • If somebody starts a controversial subject, try keeping it civil when dealing with it. If things get out of hand please flag the conversation.
  • It would be nice if it stuck to music, but it's not a requirement! So talk about news, current events, how you're getting your hair done next time you hit the hairdresser! Whateves, really!
  • No nasty comments aimed at other users.
Inappropriate hugs to all y'all, and wishing you an awesome weekend!

A new performance by Monica Naranjo, now THIS is a true Diva voice. Power, phrasing, effortless G5 and some gorgeous quasi-operatic vocalizations at the end

  3. And also to post a video and playlist of a "new" Country singer/songwriter who wrote several Country hits for others (nominated for a CMA award) and who's first solo album dropped this year and in spite of getting reviews as good as Beyonce's effort, is largely ignored.
Which (like leann Rimes' Spitfire" ) is another very deserving album shamefully passed over for Country album Grammy in favor of Taylor's straight out pop album Red btw.
Anyway...enormously talented songwriter with a knack for witty lyrics telling compelling stories, a lovely voice with country twang who can produce the promised goods live.
Here's two vids and a link to a playlist for the whole album...

Interesting song, reminds me at time of the idiosyncratic sounds of Grace Jones and others to the vocal color of Vanessa Amorosi/Taylor Dayne.

  5. Not really Adele like is it? ;-) (joke!)

It's not really a song I think. More like an intro to the album. But I liked the vocals and the idiosyncrasy.

  6. Infinite kudos to her for still peddling a single released in August of last year (though the video was released only last month) from an album whose lead single came out in November 2012 lol. Gotta respect her perpetual promo. All useless trivia aside, I'm very pleased to witness her emerge from her vocal valley (it was lower than Toni's lowest register). I knew she had it in her, even when she disappointed me live in concert. I hope that at some point her big personality becomes secondary to her big voice. It truly deserves industry acclaim.

The vocal timbre can be at times Adele-esque. I think I didn't express myself well when I compared her to Adele. What I meant is that it seems to me that they have both been influenced by similar sources, and nowadays there are many female singers with that sound which seem to have appeared around similar times. Even recently I heard of a new one called Audra Mae who is featured in Avicii's album. I wonder if that's because record labels simply want artists that are somewhat similar in some aspects to market them while there's a "boom" of that sound or what.

Does Anouk have songs that show more upper range? The things I heard by her were mostly middle voice. Of course, not every singer has to be a high belter. I'm just curious.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I'm curious, what do we think of Kacey Musgraves here? She released her debut album early last year but I've noticed that I don't think we've ever talked about her here. She's not exactly a diva in terms of vocals, but neither is Taylor Swift or some other people we talk about here, so I'm just gonna put this out there. The video is her entire debut album. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKxBJGGlACw

  11. I think that Monica Naranjo is an excellent technical singer. However, it's a rather disconcerting change between the full, odd-sounding (to me) mixed belt, then suddenly switching to her head voice, which is quite beautiful.

Honestly, I would prefer it if she sang operatically, or at least Classically. Her tone in classical singing is simply GORGEOUS.

  12. how many of you know about fifth harmony?

  13. I do. And I've heard them live...they're not good with big crowds, but they're stunning in acoustic environments.

  14. I'm new to being enthusiastic about lyrics but this song feels like story I've lived through... Like...seriously....I love this song.... I feel like I can relate to it and I haven't been through half the shit she was singing about....well that's a stretch to say but I can relate to the general theme of the song...

  15. LOL Actually this time it was me. Amd I am lucky enough to be born female and happily so and disciplined enough to not be fat.
I didn't elaborate why because I suspected you'd think it was personal. But seeing your response you think so anyway so...I really tried to like that performance A; because I love the sound of Spanish and B: because several of my friends admire this singer ( and I checked out the song you covered and did like that one) but...though I am sure technically this was excellent and I know and like the traditional Spanish music which I'm sure many would say is a bit "shouty" at times, I felt this was a bit shouty at times in a, to my, admittedly un professionally schooled, ears unpleasant manner. I also felt it a bit too showing off-ish for my taste.
Also didn't care much for the song (the music that is, don't understand the lyrics as I hardly know any Spanish)

  16. imao iknow them,i would say i'm literally addicted to each of their voices
ps-lol its weird seeing their name popping out of nowhere on this site hmm they're going in right direction i think

    ReplyDelete
  17. Didn't you ask that before though?
Personally I didn't like her album or her voice even enough to listen to the whole thing. I am at a loss what the fuss is about because I heard her mentioned plenty where I didn't hear of Rimes' album nor Brandy's album both also released last april 2013 and imo much more likeable works.

  18. yeah ik they need to put some more hardwork in their concert performances but tbh i think they've learned alot in just 1 year

    ReplyDelete
  19. Primo Uomo Assoluto10 January 2014 at 23:08

LOL, she has sung a little bit of classical at the end of her live concerts, almost as a joke...she sings part of Verdi's requiem in her soprano voice, and after a long held note she says (in spanish) "oh, fuck this shit" and goes on to sing "Amor y Lujo" (Love and luxury), one of her most ironic songs about superficiality and idolizing celebrities.

She also has some songs with with operatic vocalizations, mainly for effect. But one of Monica's main features is how she plays with her voice, switching between different vocal placements and colors. That's one thing I really admire about her and I've learned how to do and incorporated into my own stuff. It's also a feature she learned from the great Italian diva Mina.

  20. Primo Uomo Assoluto10 January 2014 at 23:17

I don't take criticism personally, it's only when it's CLEARLY personal and meant as an attack that I take it personal, LOL.

Yes, Monica's singing is a bit of an acquired taste. Some people think her voice is shouty and unpleasant or too heavy and "manly" in the lower region. There's even a joke in Spain where they say "here comes the ambulance, wailing like Monica Naranjo". I think that's just the nature of her voice, a real dramatic soprano with plenty of metal. She has other songs which showcase her voice in a much more mellow and smoother tone till the last 3rd of the song where her voice explodes. Please listen to this one:

  21. Primo Uomo Assoluto10 January 2014 at 23:19

Oh, and here's a bossa nova also showing the warmth and smoothness of her voice. This is one of the reasons why I admire Monica's singing, she shows so many different vocal colors, not just the screeching harpy/banshee, while many big voiced divas only know how to belt hard and not much else.

Oh! and she also sang "O mio babbino caro" at this Spanish variety show where Spanish celebrities impersonate famous singers. Monica is one of the judges, and on the first episode she impersonated Maria Callas, but she herself said "This was a sacrilege".

  24. Yeah, Flamenco is sometimes known for being somewhat shouty, but that kind of music is only typical from the south of the country, and right now it is a bit on decay. I'd even dare to say that right now we have a lack of Spanish power belters (I mean, young ones) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=263yd-O63ko

  25. Definitely, and for a music singing show act, and not even winning it, I would say they're on their road to success.

  28. I'd say a great many singers are influenced by the great blues and soul singers but I'd say Anouk's music and singing and voice are quite different from Adele's. I'd also say she has a bigger range and better technique than Adele.

I thought she was going quite high in the above video there?

There's this one though, maybe that's the kind of thing you meant?

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D389DUhwIlU

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NitSAOE3ly4

Also a few Anouk facts: She started gigging at 15 (singing Aretha and Tina Turner covers), 8 years before Adele was even born and had a world wide hit when Adele was 8.

You seem to keep suggesting Anouk is inspired or following Adele's trail in some way? This is obviously not true in any way.

And after her worldwide hit she was invited to the States by Sony to negotiate a contract. Unfortunately her temper and drinking got the better of her and after several days of meetings in which they suggested marketing her as a "edgy Britney Spears" and finally keeping her waiting 3 hours after a meeting was supposed to take place, when he finally shwed up...she grabbed the exec in question by the throat and told him off thoroughly (had to be escorted out of the building by security guards..twice!).

Believe you me, this is no woman who can be told by execs what to do and especially not how or what to sing. She writes her own material btw.

  31. LOL That reminds me of a joke my dad came up with after being forced by my fandom to hear a lot of Streisand. One day he asked if I had heard she was marrying a jet pilot...they were going to break the sound barrier together..

Anyway, I hear what you mean about Monica but after listening to this and the other two ( I did enjoy the bossa Nova tune best) you posted, I think her tone most of the time is just not really my cup of tea. But that is not saying anything against her mind you. Just how I experience voices.
But I too do not think very highly of diva's who can only belt but show little else. No doubt that is why we both agree on Streisand. ;-)

Really? I thought there was plenty of Flamenco in Spain
I haven't been there since I was little, but I saw a lot of it on the streets. And their style is influenced by gypsy stylings, so the inflections are torn and raspy at times.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Primo Uomo Assoluto11 January 2014 at 01:49

Indeed, dramatic voices are an acquired taste, can be too dark or too cavernous or too metallic or too acidic for most tastes. And even when recorded, they need space to bloom, otherwise they sound too harsh from up-close.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I don't know. I'm starting to think differently of Lorde. I thought she was an awesome lyricist, but according to Wiki -- she didn't even co-write any of her songs.
    http://gyazo.com/d5a11fcbc794fee90c0d5464a6f20cdc.png

Now, if you want to take about some real writing talent, then look at Marina and the Diamonds. That women has one brain full of lyrical magic. I still like Lorde's songs, but it doesn't have as much meaning to me anymore.

As for her live performances, they creep me out...and sometimes those little twitches and movements hinder her vocals.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Wait...yes she did...her real name is on each song on the track-listing...unless there are some buying-out/ghost-writing thing going on, I can't knock her for not writing....

  62. Oh man, Marina. I love you. I've been on a Diamond rampage right now since we have the ok about her new single coming this summer. Her voice is hypnotizing and I wish she just showed it off a little bit more. It has a nice buoyancy and the way she takes advantage of her head voice is magnificent and pretty unique; she can give it a light and bouncy timbre as well as a darkened and thicker timbre as she descends. She also has the nice ability to switch registers almost instantly without lack of tonal quality and intonation -- Not too mention she is gorgeous!

  65. I was first exposed to her at her oscar performance last year and was blown away. I read that she doesn't overdo her voice and gets plenty of rest. That would explain her fantastic vocal condition. I prefer her aged voice because it has darkened imo.

  67. Primo Uomo Assoluto11 January 2014 at 05:48

Well, Callas is very much an acquired taste. Many people find her voice quite ugly while others find her voice sublime.

What's special of such voices is that for lack of a traditionally pretty vocal timbre they have infinite vocal colors to play with.

    For example Callas:

Those performances you posted are far more impressive than other things I had heard by her that you had posted and that YouTube linked to. She has a good, smooth, evenly coordinated mix. I heard a Bb5 there, it's good.

    ReplyDelete
  69. LOL yes I know she is a more acquired taste. And one I acquired the first time I heard her. :-)

  71. i like tamar's cd. i love this song. but i really don't care for this arrangement/performance at all. maybe b/c as the commenter below mentioned, i've been listening to the record since august & this is a bit of a departure? idk.

    ReplyDelete
  72. Well, I certainly get a kick out of her cynical sense of humour. Her 'O mio babbino caro' wasn't complete classical until she reached into her head voice, but that's the nature of her style. The brashness of her voice is simply off-putting, though I heavily admire her ability to sing anything she damn well pleases. I think she'll be someone I acclimate to slowly.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Such a mess to my ears! 100 points to the live instrumentation, but her live singing always sounds to me like a melismatic nightmare. Her tone is superb, her tessitura is another pleasure, but she's no Toni, it lacks control and may I say classiness? :(

    ReplyDelete
  74. No, Flamenco is not as popular in Spain as it used to be years ago, and even in its "golden age" it still wasn't as popular as foreigners think (I have a friend from the USA that thought that people walking down the street randomly would start singing Flamenco and everyobody would join them lol). Which part of the country were you at? because there's a clear difference in the liking of Flamenco depending on the part of the country.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Yeah, I love that too! At the very beggining I thought it was due to bad technique, but those little chokes always come in the perfect moment. It makes it sound like she was crying while singing and adds a lot of passion. I should learn hw to do that.

    ReplyDelete
  76. Yeah I was thinking of it while typing "hmmm, it's actually almost impossible to remember the first song you ever heard" haha. I know this is the one because it's my eldest memory. I'm sure I heard some other songs before, but this one is the first I ever paid attention to and hell, since then I knew that I wanted to dedicate myself to music. A pitty that I didn't set myself to it before...

    ReplyDelete
  77. Well, I'm in no position to say wether they're hot or not, but I've always found Flamenco female singers to be very elegant, so I guess that's the gay equivalent haha. And you can actually erase that "at times", flamenco is shouty 90% of the time. It's actually strange that I don't like it since I usually like shouty voices (I'm a fan of Christina and Foo Fighters, I have to like them lol) .

    ReplyDelete
  78. Classiness?

Explain how someone's singing a very meaningful song and delivery be classless? I am confused.

  79. Primo Uomo Assoluto11 January 2014 at 10:55

Well, dramatic voices are (generally speaking) an acquired taste. It's like drinking hard liquor or eating sushi for the very first time. At first one might dislike it, but with time one might catch a taste for it and enjoy it.

I don't know who you are referring to...but there are some Tebaldi and Gruberova as well as Devia (and occassionally Sutherland) fans who hate on Callas all the time. What's funny is that Gruberova (who calls herself "Queen of bel canto") has said that Callas sang roles she had no business singing, while she herself sings roles she simply cannot sing because she lacks half the range (the lower range) and vocal weight to sing. And Sutherland, as great as she was, often implied that Callas shortened the life of her voice by using chest voice...and Sutherland's flaw was that she was scared of using the chest voice, often interpolating the vocal line up an octave or completely re-writing it in order to avoid the low notes, thus negating the intention of the composer in the use of the lowest notes which in those bel canto roles come to mean the "point of no return", and when sung up an octave lose their dramatic impact.

  85. Has anyone seen the movie "Warm Bodies"? I will admit, it was a lovely idea with some very convincing acting.... But the movie was just corny as hell and at times, you were reminded this is just an elaborate idea instead of an alternate reality (IMHO, if at any point in the movie you're reminded you're viewing a movie then the movie is not doing its job as good as it could be).... But some points in the movie were just stellar (Won't spoil it), especially the acting!!!! But it wasn't perfect... To be nit-picky, it gave me the strangest feeling to feel the reaction the zombie was trying to feel....It was written plainly across the zombie's face but their less then human state hindered them and it made the fact that I cried at about 6 parts in the movie feel slightly awkward. Now, if that is what the director was trying to invoke from the viewers then kudos because that was great but if not....then, hell it still was very good acting in a time of everything is stale and lifeless, senseless violence, lets have sex, type of movie universe.

The story though was based heavily off of Romeo and Juliet which was both good and bad. The good was that, it modernized it in a fairly unique way... Like, instead of 2 conflicting sides, there were three which was actually kinda neat. Basically it was two types of zombies, one semi-living and one just very dead, fighting. What this movie did that put a unique twist on the hellova played zombie name was actually making zombies intelligent and multidimensional.... It was pretty much set up that you thing R (The male lead) was the only zombie to think the way he thought before getting infected but in actuality all the zombies thought that way. However, the disease (whatever it was that turned them to walking dead) made them void of feeling and made it incredibly hard to interact with their world intelligently, hence humanly. It sent the zombies into a primal state of sorts, where they craved human meat.... Then there were the other zombies, the bonies which were older zombies who became dilapidated and "lost hope" and simply ate anything with a heartbeat, not just human... You'd think they lacked intelligence for being reduced to such a state, but it couldn't be furthest from the truth. The creatures were intelligent and fairly formidable too which added a nice spin IMHO...

The bad is that there was no tragedy... What made Romeo and Juliet so special to me was that through tragedy, everyone came together but that's being nit-picky. It also had some very, very corny similarities to the play but I have to cut it a break there. It was after-all, based on the play...LOL.

But in all honesty, this movie had a lot to fuck up but it didn't. It was by no means perfect but I did enjoy it. I just though it was a nice twist in a stale sea of twilights and immortal instruments and hunger games....

I'd give it a 7.5 if I had to rate it.

    ReplyDelete
  86. If I had a keyboard or the exact instrumental, I'd cover it. But have you ever listened to a song and it just straight up made you cry? For me I don't know whats the most emotional: the bass heavy arrangement, the vocals, or the lyrics. But I've never been the guy to really like beats so I'll reduce it to either the lyrics or vocals, maybe even both.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Beyonce's voice gone uglier. it sounds more thinner, grittier, and darker. so what do you think
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xUfCUFPL-8

  88. I have but it never made me want to cover it. :-)
Guess I am just a musician by nature.

  89. Yes he was a Tebaldi fan as I recall.

  90. The fascination with zombies is one which completely passed me by. But as far as I can see it is an very American thing and as such I do find it interesting what it says about American society. because I think it does say something to that.

    ReplyDelete
  91. Oh, GAWD its hard to hold back the stan inside that wants to rip you apart for having the words "Beyonce's voice" and "uglier" in the same sentence.... But as a fan of Beyonce, I know how she likes to get gritty sometimes. This album shows off quite a different amount of vocal textures she uses. I take it as you haven't listened to the album considering your statement? LOL...

I'm sorry. Its hard for me not to worship my Illuminati queen!!!!! But I'll keep it civil if you respond...LOL JK...

    ReplyDelete
  92. For me, I''m fascinated by anything that looks or acts like a human but is not a human and zombies are in the middle of my list (Very long list and mermaids aren't on there. I had to omit them ugly thangs'). LOL. In fact most of the creatures in my book are based on mythical creatures. Like my Xyrnurian people, (Picture them as giant silver flying lemurs from hell) are based on the idea of nephilium but I changed up quite a bit. And my Crylo people are based off of the ideas of manticores and sphinxes but I kept them fairly close to how they look in Greek and Persian mythology but still changed them up somewhat.

    ReplyDelete
  93. LOL it's fine. I totally understand you! but seriously, she sounded tired here and i listened to the other songs of the album and im not hearing the usual pristine beyonce

    ReplyDelete
  94. Her tessitura is at its lowest ever. But it now seems she doesn't have the same amount of ease above Eb5 anymore but its all good because I'm in love with her mid belts. My favorite songs, in order are Haunted, Flawless, Blow, Rocket, Drunk in Love, that song with Frank Gay Boy Ocean, and I'd have to say....Well thats it. LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I think she's at the point where she's just having a lot fun with her albums and not worrying too much about vocals. Now, she still managed three octaves with this album but I don't think she belted above an Eb5 lol. Her voice will age, but being a mezzo, she still has a few years before it's more of a MC case. XO is a fantastic song too...but to say her voice is ugly. LOL YOU HAVE LOST YOUR MIND

    ReplyDelete
  96. There were a few E5s and there was a F5 some where. Her belting register is still intact considering this... Its just that high notes aren't important to her considering she knows what vocal contrast is...LOL, As long as there is a substantial brightness increase between her F3-C5, thats all that matters... LOL...

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d-BzW0GRpow

    ReplyDelete
  97. Lol I tried to learn how to do that, but it sounds so awkward with my voice. Especially with lower notes. Her agility is a really nice feature and compliments the rest of the group. I sorta see her as the "lead" singer, even though they get fair amounts of air time x)

    ReplyDelete
  98. David Tennant made such a whiny doctor. :p

    Christopher Eccelston all the way!

    ReplyDelete
  99. sadly for you my brain is intact and still working. it is just what i think. you don't need to get butthurt. anyway im not convince on her having fun thing.....

  104. LOL You guys are joking I hope about the illuminati thing. I mean you DO realize that's a thing springing from the fevered minds of the delusional?

    ReplyDelete
  105. Yes but think about this...a fascination with humans that aren't quite human and all stories about zombies are about killing them.
Psychologically I think that is very telling. Just like the extreme fear of sexuality. And all that in combination with the American brand of christianity!
Anyway..just saying I find that more interesting than zombie movies and such. :-)

Btw have you ever read Jack Vance?

    ReplyDelete
  106. I am guessing Nolwenn is a big fan of Celtic Woman and Enya.

    ReplyDelete
  107. probably.. :) She is from Brittany (i don't know if you know where it is), it's a region of France who shares roots with the Celtic world, and her recent work is a tribute to her "country" (Brittany is one of the French regions which are really attached to their identity and thair inhabitant are very close to their culture)

So I think it's great for French "pop" and music to have this celtic taste... (because she also did "poppier" (does that word even make sense or have I just made it up?^^) songs with that celtic vibe in them)

    ReplyDelete
  108. The only books I've gotten the chance to read were those damn giant biology books for my BIOL1111 class and GAWD was it terrible... I also had to read my american history book for the semester... Its like I only have time to do shit on the weekend... I hate school.

    ReplyDelete
  109. I've never invested the time to research what it was, just going from earsay to earsay. But yes, I was joking. I honestly have no earthly idea what it is...LOL

    ReplyDelete
  110. Yes I know where it is. I'm European and a fan of Celtic music.
I just meant that this particular singer seems very much inspired by a particular kind of "Celtic music" which always strikes me as more of a modern idea of what Celtic music is than what a lot actually is. I mean, this version of Celtic is all "dreamy" and, ,just my opinion , bland. Where as traditional Celtic music is way more passionate.
Are you familiar with Canadian Breton fiddle music for instance?

  112. Ah okay, I wasn't sure if you knew or not about Britanny... ^^
Yes I have to agree with you on that, point, I'm not a celtic music specialist, but yes I've always found this kind of music very dreamy and "calm" compared to other celtic artists and musicians... But I love it a lot, It actually makes me think of magical/fantastics/I-don't-really-know-what stories and mood... I'm quite a dreamer :p

No, I've never listened to Canadian Breton fiddle music, but I will surely do, I love discovering new genres...especially whan they make me travel

If you've heard of Mike Oldfield (you probably have), one of my favorite album is The Voyager, you can hear a celtic inspiration in it, and some sounds that you could find in fantasy movies, but in his way... In my opinion, this man is a genius

Sorry for my bad grammar by the way, I'm still trying to improve my English

  123. "Ok, but Artpop has zero art in it, it's all about sex, drugs and hanging with Donatella.
And Born this way sold in one week in the US only almost as much as Artpop since its release worldwide."
    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"so for something to be considered art it has to be commercially succesful??? what kind of logic is that"

Logic you put in my mouth obviously. Both sentences were completely unrelated.

I was just stating that, from Born this way to Artpop, sales plummeted, which is a fact. It shows a decline in a career and a failure to fulfill people's high expectations (she hyped the hell out of this album during ONE YEAR).

Successful radio singles don't mean anything since you can buy radio slots.

"i think she was just betrayed by people especially troy"

You've just contradicted Anthagio, who stated "Troy Carter and Gaga mutually decided to move away from one another". And, betrayed, are you serious on there? Don't forget she's the only one supposed to be in charge of her career, she's a "control freak". So, when things are fine, she takes all the credit, but when the tide turns, point fingers? That's too easy.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Lol Butthurt is an overstatement. Stating an opinion that you don't agree with doesn't mean I'm angry, it means we have different ways of viewing Bey. I was hoping you would get the sarcasm with the "LOL YOU HAVE LOST YOUR MIND"...I thought large caps and the LOL would give it away.

  126. To be honest, I was never a big fan of Gaga when she was at the height of her fame a few years ago. She doesn't come off as much fun, really. Cares too much about what people think of her, and it shows. She comes across as completely nutty. I'm not a fan of artists naming their fan bases. It's incredibly egotistical. "Monsters", my god. It's ridiculous. And she thinks she's some force of nature? She has some serious issues and its' clear. People love to give Miley hell, but I think Gaga is the one they should be concerned about. Maybe it's time she left showbiz to have a real life and find happiness. She's certainly not going to get it in entertainment.

    ReplyDelete
  129. Primo Uomo Assoluto11 January 2014 at 20:08

The voice doesn't reach its prime till the early-mid 40's if properly taken care off. I doubt Beyonce will lose her voice if she keeps up her good technique. One doesn't need to belt out high in every song/album.

    ReplyDelete
  130. Primo Uomo Assoluto11 January 2014 at 20:10

"ugly" and "pretty" are subjective terms though, which I believe have little to do with the singer's vocal ability.

    ReplyDelete
  131. It could, but considering her track record, I'd be a bit skeptical. But the only dark part of her voice is her mid belts from what I've heard.

    ReplyDelete
  132. LOLOLOL the caps didn't work.. yes i agree to you.

My favorite song and IMO the best song on her album. The lyrics are just so honest, raw, and vulnerable. I can't explain it, but I really connected with this song. I think the production is great, and I would love for it to be released as a single.

    ReplyDelete
  147. EvilTroyandEvilAbed11 January 2014 at 21:17

Because she's a breath of fresh air lyrically. She's releasing music that defies current trends on country music radio and the mold expected of female solo acts (i.e Carrie, Miranda, Taylor).

I think Merry Go Round, much like Sally Mae from Janelle Monae, paints an incredibly accurate picture of what small town life in South can be.

Bottom line, I think she's a good lyricist and she's the first artist in a while that's made me take notice of the lyrics, rather than just the melody and production of the song.

    ReplyDelete
  148. EvilTroyandEvilAbed11 January 2014 at 21:20

I think she's fantastic. Every bit deserving of her BNA nomination, and I struggling between her and Kendrick Lamar - who released an incredible debut album as well - as to who should take home the prize. I'd be happy with either.

Maybe she doesn't have "diva" vocals, but she's a lot more innovative than a lot of the artists covered on this page. Just a great artist all around. And it just needs to be said, she's really paid her dues in Nashville.

    ReplyDelete
  149. I do know of Mike Oldfield but like I said, just in my opinion, it's all too "dreamy" and feels too bland to me.
I am probably too much of a cynic. LOL

Wouldn't worry about your English if I were you. Looks pretty good to me. Better than many a native speaker I have seen on the net. ;-)

  150. LOL Like a good Doctor Who fan you went on a tangent indeed.
I am not a Who fan myself.(More a Torchwood fan) Only seen a couple of the very very old episodes when I was a child and then David Tennant.
And what I remember most of David Tennant is this Red Nose Day skit. (which is hilarious)

  158. its a common belief that illuminati was a society more like a group which doesn't exist anymore and honestly i'm confused you can't deny the symbolism illuminati believers provide its just unmissable in music industry

    ReplyDelete
  159. Funnily enough..Merry Go Round was written together with Shane McAnally who co wrote all the songs on the Brandy Clark album I posted on elsewhere in this thread. Clark also co wrote with Musgraves btw and both mcAnally and Clark wrote several hits for Country's big names.
And funnily enough I love the lyrics and music of Clark. Maybe it's the fact that Kacey's album to me sounded too modern country i.e. pop/rock for my taste? And I didn't enjoy her tone.

But if it is the lyrics why you like Musgraves you definitely should also check out Brandy.

I wouldn't personally call Musgraves a "fresh breath" lyrically because she really isn't doing anything Patty Griffin, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Shawn Colvin, Darrell Scott are doing and have been doing for decades.

    ReplyDelete
  160. Symbolism is a often misread. Illuminati believers will for instance see anything triangular as a symbol for a pyramid. Which is btw a symbol long predating that 1776 actual group.
And there are many common beliefs which are imaginations which appeal to certain folk and then get spread around. Doesn't make the a fact. Dan Brown's novels are NOT history books. ;-)

Like I said, the actual Illuminati were a group of intellectuals and dedicated to fighting superstition...such as the believe in an actual power to symbols etc in asociet at that time still deeply steeped in such nonsense.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Haha that might even be worse when you think about it..

    ReplyDelete
  162. Lol, I don't want to think about it...

    ReplyDelete
  163. I may not be the most impartial person since I'm a fan of Demi, but when they're both in a good vocal day, Demi SALYS Ariana in almost every area.

  164. HauntinglyHollow11 January 2014 at 23:13

I don't understand one thing: Why everybody says that Beyonce has an ordinary voice ?

    ReplyDelete
  165. Btw "society" is a group. Not sure what else you mean with "society".
What I am wondering about is...what do those believers in the existence of such a group think is the purpose of putting such symbols in music imagery? And the purpose of that group?

    ReplyDelete
  166. LOL You can chalk it up to your English lit education. :-)
I know Vance was, here in the Netherlands, on the list of books deemed sufficiently literary to be read for such classes.

    ReplyDelete
  167. Although Ariana is a great vocalist, Demi has a rich and powerful tone that just resonates throughout each register. Technical wise, Ariana wins by far. However, when it's down to pure tone, power, and texture of the voice, Demi all the way.

Power/Tone in the Upper Register: Demi
    Head Voice/Whistle Register: Ariana
    Technicality: Ariana
    Lower-Register: Demi

    ReplyDelete
  168. Anyone written their own song? I've started a few lyrics but have writer's block. Haha, if you guys have any recordings I would love to check them out. This blog is full of aspiring singers -- I would love to find some new talent

  170. Also, Jazmine Sullivan is making a comeback in March. I wish they were both signed to the same label. LOL...

  171. I like Demi's voice but the girl can be pushy at times with her belts. She doesn't get down on Xtinas level of straining and screaming but Demi really tries hard to be as loud as possible while belting and sometimes it doesn't sound the most pleasant haha.

    ReplyDelete
  172. I'm gonna get on a lot of Bey fans nerves when I say this but im on the bandwagon of Beyonce has an average voice. Its really just my personal taste and I can't really say much technically about her voice that would really support my taste but yeah. Her voice just doesn't captivate me in its tone like other voices can (again just personal preference). I mean Beyonce can SANG but honestly I would rather listen to Xtina shout and scream like a hollaring monkey live than see a Beyonce concert. Mainly because she does the same routine every show and I can just youtube it. Maybe thats why. Beyonce's over technical and follows a strict routine and that bores me. But she does sing very well and puts on a good performance for the most part. She just doesn't have a voice that makes me go "Oh Yes girl you SANG IT" like other singers. I don't really get that much character out of Beyonces voice.

    ReplyDelete
  173. haha what genre? You seem like an R&B type person. I would love to hear a few.

I'm writing one right now, but it's gonna be Alt Rock/Indie Rock.

    ReplyDelete
  174. You'll be surprised.... Demi overall has the better vocal core while Ariana only has HV which she wins with.
    Vocal size: Demi but slightly
    Lower register: Demi
Mid voice: Demi all the way!
Belting register to upper limits: Demi actually has size and Ariana only gets size above F5. Not to mention, Demi has a chest tone all the way up the scale.
HV/F/WR Ect: Ariana... Its all she got TBH.
Technique: Both leave a lot to be desired... In fact lets break technique down further.

-Connections between registers: Neither, both are on par with one another. BAD!!!!!
-Phrasing: Demi has some stellar phrasing particularly at the top of her lungs. If I recall, she can phrase a G#5/A5.
-Agility: As of lately, Demi... Both girls have fair agility but Demi has a bit more ease, mainly because of the fact that she thinks them out before attempting but she's still no coloratura. Ariana is sloppy at the top end of her voice. Hell, who am I kidding...Demi is sloppy too....
-Virtuosity: Its a bit to early to say for Ariana but I can say that it doesn't seem she's found her identity as an "artist" yet. I also can say the same for Demi but to a lesser degree. Demi though has shown she is more than capable of tackling multiple genres, even throaty rock tinge styles. If Ariana tries that, her throat might self destruct.
-Stamina: Demi has decent stamina while Ariana doesn't really. Heart Attack....all I gotta say....
    -Vibrato: UGH, both are terrible......
-Resonance: Demi, not by a few miles but the entire equatorial circumference of our dear Earth. Even through the shaky lower register that is only shaky because she lacks confidence, to the mid voice, to the mid belt, to the upper belt, she just demolishes Ariana.... We're talking about C#3-A5 where she just demolishes Ariana in both size and power. Comparitvely Ariana only has C4-G#5 where she shows some resonance.... and there is a huge gap...her mid belts (B4-E5) Don't exist.... F5-G#5 is the only sizable part of her voice...Her A5-B5 belts shouldn't be included anywhere because them things are a hot mess.

    Overall Rating:
    Demi: 6.5.
    Ariana: 5.9...

Both girls are decent though. And TBH, anyone above my rating of a 7 is quite good and the fact that Demi almost scored a 7 in my book is just amazing. Ariaina, though my review of her shows that she is quite overrated as a singer, is very decent. The whole 4.5-6.9 region of my idea of a technical rating for pop singers mean that the singer is decent...not terrible, just above average.

  175. Demi gets pitchy at times too. On that "Stay" cover, she hit some Ds and Es but she'd go back down to the 4th octave when she lost her "staying power"...

  176. She's seen Britney's legendary breakdown several years ago. Now she's just witnessed how much attention Amanda Bynes got for her breakdown. Meanwhile, Gaga's own fame has plummeted in the past couple of years, from being the biggest pop star in the world to a C-lister. She WANTS people to think she's nuts, because it will get her attention, She's putting on an act.

  177. I'm a soul, gothic, and rock type of person. I also write tons of reggae.

This is the third song on my EP and also my most rangy one (as far as falsetto goes... I haven't shown off my upper chest in its entirety yet)... Tomorrow, I'll be recording the 4th song if I'm not lazy.

  178. I don't know about all the technical stuff but I checked out random live vids and I think Ariana is a better singer than Demi. To me live singing is always the ultimate test of a singer.

  179. I agree. I find Beyonce is just utterly forgettable. Christina can sound awful and she can sound great but her voice is definitely still in my head 5 minutes after the tune finishes.(whether that's good or bad is subjective of xourse) Beyonce's is not. It's gone the moment the tune stops.
For example..though the line from that godawful 50's mentality song does annoyingly stick, the tone of the voice singing it... does not.

  185. She isn't a good live vocalist. She does too much and sounds sloppy.

  188. HAHA...so much singing...
and yes. I've written my own songs. I don't consider them any good, though.

  189. Well, those examples are terrible for me, as my first shot went down like water, and I've loved sushi since I was four...but I get the concept.
I don't know - I don't have a block like that on other dramatic voices (I've loved Callas since forever, and Patti Labelle makes me happy)...there's just something about her style in and of itself that will take some getting used to for me.

  190. You got any of them uploaded? Got my mind wondering now..haha

I write songs, but I don't consider myself a songwriter, it's hard for me to come up with catchy melodies...the melodies that come natural for me would be more at home in alternative or gothic rock, LOL.
I do have a couple of more poppy stuff I've done though :P

Because, sadly, singers don't sing for musicians but for an audience that appreciates things on the most basics of levels...subjective criteria such as beauty of tone or emotional connection with the singer - which depends as much on the singer as on the listener's willingness and receptiveness. So, many people judge the vocal ability of a singer based entirely on whether if they like the innate timbre of the voice or not, without considering the overall vocal skill and artistry of the vocalist.
I consider Beyonce's voice quite interesting, it's sweet and tangy, like orange juice, LOL.

You've heard her sound great compared to what though? I've heard her sound pleasant, but never truly great if we measure her by the standards she and her team have tried to hype her to be as - The amalgamation of Whitney/Mariah/Aretha/Etta James.

Could be the flamenco inflections and the changes of vocal placement and colors that can be off putting for some people. But if we are not exposed to things outside of our comfort zone, we never know if we might like it or not :P

I don't think the problem is recognizing a good technical singer ;)
I think the issue appears when one tries to make good singing into this esoteric, magical thing that cannot be defined and could mean anything, when - It only seems wise and sensible to me - one should judge singers based on their technical ability and musicianship before applying other more subjective criteria.

Today I watched the full season 1 of Game of Thrones. I'm most invested on Daenary's story. When she walks into the funeral pyre and then is unburnt and woke up the baby dragons...That's about as bad ass as it gets.
