Katy Perry Is Sure To Get Those Illuminati Nuts Going With Spooky "Dark Horse" Performance @ 2013 Grammy

katy perry Grammy 2014

You know what? We all know by now that Katy Perry is not the best vocalist in the world. I think even she knows that. But what she compensates this assault on our auditory system with, well at least when performing at award shows, is a sumptuous feast for our eyes. Okay, she's not THAT bad, but her visuals always greatly improve on what is being served up, vocally.

Her rendition of Dark Horse at the 2014 Grammys was no different! Giving us Gothic goodness, the Diva certainly had me under her spell. The pole dancing around the broomsticks was something else though- good or not, I'm not quite sure yet. Even acknowledging the lethargy in her movements, I still enjoyed the whole spectacle- perhaps because I like the song.

Speaking of choreography, can someone explain to me what kind of dance move she was attempting at 2.25! Were her hips supposed to be moving, or was she just marching on the spot? Help!

Thoughts?

  2. Well, she ain't drink Crystal in our neck of the woods--maybe back in her postcode :P.

I dunno what to make of this girl. She intrigues and bores the shit out of me at the same time.

I find her to be a "realer" but less interesting, younger, Lana Del Rey. Her lyrics are actually not deep at all if you read them.

As to her performance, she was okay. Those harmonies she delivers in the actual song (which are nice and tight) kind of outshined her live vocal.

She has this very, very odd gesticulation which makes me wonder if those faces are from her straining or just conjuring whatever it is that makes her Lorde (most likely latter)

  3. LOL @ that. didn't notice. I think she was trying to figure out what next. She seems to be a nervous performer underneath it all.

I was happy that she seemed not to be afraid of the song because you an almost read the anxiety on her face in "Unconditionally". I see why her stans named it "UNCLE!"

  7. It was okay. She sounded like she was croaking sometimes and the choreography was a bit laughable tbh, but it wasn't that bad.

I thought her vocals were on point by her standards, and I loved the performance...she was serving Queen Witch Supreme realness. I think she must obviously be a fan of American Horror Story Coven :)

  17. She covered it for her Backyard Sessions in 2012. It's pretty cool considering Dolly is her godmother.

  18. Yeah. I loved her Backyard Sessions although I think she should have covered more songs lol

  20. Surprisingly Madonna seemed to do better with the chorus of the other song than with Open Your heart.
Wonder what's up with her? She seems to be aging rapidly and extremely. I mean...woman is only 55 but she's looking and moving as if she's 70. ( that's including the obvious work done)

  21. And that's my point! To be able to use figurative in a language one needs to grasp the language.
Unfortunately, you, in spite of my explaining, still don't understand why "chameleon" is incorrect. This is of course inherent to the problem ...fact that the explanation is also in English and hence...not grasped.
And why the assessment of my language by those grasping at English is less than impressive.

    A chameleon btw doesn't change it's form.

The assessment of my English by one who is grasping this much, is really of little value. :-)

  22. It is clear from your lack of understanding explanations , that they are pretty useless. And yes, your belief in your own understanding is a fallacy.

But hey, I will give it one last try...English language is shaped by a certain concept of what is logical. If one, for instance, wants to use something figuratively, it still has to have a logical connection by the logic of western society.
English is a dominant language and as such, when it uses words from another language, English is "the surroundings" not the "chameleon".
You couldn't even say the word originating from another language is a "chameleon" either because it doesn't change itself but ..it's surroundings.
Therefor your figure of speech was not really English and fundamentally incorrect.

I'd advise you to either give this explanation some serious thought OR accept that as long as you use English the way you do, you will always be pretty quickly sussed as not being a native speaker. It's up to you I would say.
I only responded because you brought it up yourself.

  23. yeah i know she is naturally raspy but as i said "too raspy" and it was airy too. here is a better performance of JGMAR

  24. i considered that but she was too raspy from beginning to the end and her voice seemed lighter

  25. That was incredible. That mid-register of hers is on another level - I was HOLLERING the entire time. Her B4/C5/C#5 notes were amazing and she seems to be the most at ease between the A4 - E5 region when belting. Question: Is she a Spinto-Soprano or an EXTREMELY Full- Lyric Soprano?

  26. From an observer’s standpoint, Opie, you do seem to have a tendency to find fault with anything that looks Asian. “This one needs to be more humble.” “This one does not possess ‘true understanding’ of the English language.” “Heh, they’re only good at rote memorization!” Sounds like you’ve ingested the usual racial superiority rhetoric. You should seriously get that checked out. LOL.

Like the singers we love to read about and discuss, you each have your own strengths and weaknesses. You do sound a lot more like the average native speaker of English, but honey, that ain’t necessarily a compliment. It means that you express strong opinions, but often fail to substantiate them or persuade others to agree through means other than intimidation. In terms of style, your writing is virtually indistinguishable from that of at least a million other people. Your English is also littered with errors, especially those resulting from phonic similarities. Let’s just say you can claim a mediocre type of fluency. Sasuke’s English, on the other hand, not only contains random errors, but suffers from the occasional gap in logic. Overall, however, Sasuke comes off as more articulate and educated. Sasuke’s style is also much more varied and euphonious. It’s obvious who, between the two of you, writes closer to a publishable standard in English.

But we all seem to appreciate diverse types of voices here, so here’s to hoping that you get something out of this and we can go back to talking about music…

  27. I honestly don't even know why you even bother responding......................................... to this Dutch Dyke? She's one of the most sanctimonious & miserable Bitch-asses on this site of whom clearly doesn't have a life; why she is always set out to defy people and their opinions/knowledge? LMFAO. Please, continue to DRAG her ass with your "PERFECT ENGLISH"!!!! KIIIIIII.

  29. So, this is finally out. Lana Del Rey's cover of the iconic 'Once Upon A Dream' for upcoming Disney film 'Maleficent'. Must say, I really love it. Simply, hauntingly beautiful sound, eerie and extremely atmospheric. Lana sounds amazing here, imo:

  33. Her mid belting was stellar wasn't it? Ha! I'm right with you. I was all sorts of crazy while watching this. I was falling out of my seat, nearly even through a chair! She was on FIRE! As for her voice type, it's interesting. Initially, I thought she was a Mezzo when I watched her on X Factor. As it progressed, she showed more Soprano-like qualities. She possesses a Lyric Mezzo colour to her voice. Her voice size? Here, she was able to achieve a rather big sound on those mid belts, but on X Factor it was pretty small going off her overall sound production. I say it's Medium Sized. She's able to sing in the Soprano tessitura but loses resonance the higher she goes. So the scale of volume tends to divide. That being said, I don't think Spinto. I say she's a Full Lyric Soprano.

  34. You know how I said I like you...I actually think I'm in love, now lol

  35. ....no, Opie. No, to all of this. "English is the surroundings"? If that's the case, Orochimaru is the intentions of a snake by your logic, not simply Snake. In Katy Perry's song, it's not "I got the eye of the intimidation in a tiger's eye of the tiger", it's "eye of the tiger" not only because its concise & just sounds better, it's much more appropriate and logically sound. One isn't metaphoric with the nature of the subject and its entirety but simply the subject itself seeing as it's more definite and sums up its entire essence. Why on earth would Elvis write "Like a river flows to the sea because that's what they do because of where they're placed...some things are meant to be"? Opie, stop it. And I know you, PLEASE don't bother explaining how I'm incorrect because to be quite frank, I don't care...and I'm not incorrect. This isn't a grammar site but moreso a site focused on vocal ability. Why don't you educate someone on that...better yet, yourself. English is the chameleon, like I said. How a Chameleon adapts & emulates its surroundings, English adapts and emulates its surroundings, be it Greek, German, whatever. Please don't respond because what you say will not get through, period. After all, English is tough to grasp & what chance have I at understanding the English of a true grammatical virtuoso like you, who uses contractions in the place of possessive pronouns. Oh, the perfection is far too much!

    ReplyDelete
  36. A chameleon changes its colour...so yes, it changes its form LOL! Oh and by the way, you used a contraction of It/is in the place of a possessive pronoun =)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Yep..whole explanation went miles over your head.
No worries. I am giving up this utterly hopeless case.
    Indeed nothing gets through.
I will leave you to be utterly impressed by well known expressions like "stick up your ass". :-)

    And yes you are incorrect.
Also most of your reply made no sense as it had little to do with any point I made.

This thread btw is called "free for all". It doesn't have to be confined to vocals.

Btw A: Elvis did not write that line, B: the line is actually "like a river flows, surely, to the sea".
But I understand why you left off that "surely"..you probably didn't grasp that again. That "surely" actually is the bit that concisely says "because that is what they do because of where they're placed".

And finally, I never claimed to be a "grammatical virtuoso". I claimed to understand the language.

" After all, English evidently is tough to grasp" LOL Not only did this all start because you yourself stated that, you also neatly set about proving it certainly is ...for you.

  38. Cool story bro. Once again, I find myself very impressed by your concise way of explaining simple things. Brava, how ever do you do it? *tear*
