By now you guys should know how many f***s I give about the Grammy nominations and who goes on to win what on the night. The fact that I love the performances that intersect the show is pretty much the only reason I indulge the annual event.
I'm just not here for any panel- especially one as shady as the Grammys- telling me what constitutes award winning music. The fact that Roar by Katy Perry made the list for Song and PERFORMANCE of the year, while someone like Janelle Monáe didn't even get a mention, only affirms their irrelevance to me.
But whatever, this list was asked for so I posted it. If your opinion about the importance of the awards is different from mine, that's totally cool. Feel free to discuss your thoughts on the nominations in the comments. I'd love to still read them.
The FULL list can be found here. I've mostly omitted the Classical stuff, but you can reference the missing numbers to see exactly what I excluded.

[ You do not know how long this list took to format!! ARGHH!]
Thoughts?
The two most striking ridiculous things about this year's nominees are the fact that it's no longer awards for vocals but for "performance" and , clearly most ridiculous..no male and female categories anymore (and still Taylor Swift manages to get nominations???)
ReplyDeleteBut..when it comes to great Grammy show performances, recently found this one which I really loved...
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zw7Esd9C_yA
And one of my all time favorite Grammy performances...
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R-C_HVoiJpY
This is a good idea, opie! People, post your favourite Grammy performances! I'd never seen this before, but appreciated it.
ReplyDeleteWell this one's a bit more recent, but it's still one of my favorite Beyonce performances in general. On point and fierce. If I Were A Boy/You Oughta Know, 2010 Grammys. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UqzKEMqKwf0
ReplyDeleteLOL I thought it was your idea DD? What with posting those videos in the article.
ReplyDeleteHadn't seen it until two weeks ago either. Probably deliberately ignored it at the time because when I was a teenager..I hated this song. It seemed to me so very pathetic and needy. Which might explain my dislike for Gaga who is all pretty much all over this theme but then with a heavy sprinkling of Selfpitying Victim over it.
Enough said.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3stsDXki__U
I love Beyonce, but any time she covers You Oughta Know, I cringe.
ReplyDeleteEverything else was on point/slayed :)
I see plenty of artists that I'm rooting for, nominated :)
ReplyDeleteYep! :-)
ReplyDeleteWell, this is my analysis/observation for this years awards (I, only, care for the 'Rock, R&B & Hip-Hop categories)
ReplyDelete1. Surprise: Tamar Braxton Garners 3 Nominations For ‘Love & War’.
Snub: K. Michelle Garners 0.
2. Surprise: Justin Timberlake, Despite Garnering Up 7 Nominations, Gets Shut Out of “Big 4″
Snub: Christina Aguilera Gets None For ‘Lotus’ Which Missed 2012′s Cut Off.
3. Surprise: Katy Perry’s ‘Roar’ Garners a “Song of the Year” Nomination (In What World Is This Worthy Of Such A Thing?)
Snub: Lady Gaga, Whose ‘Applause’ was released on the same week, Garners None. Also, Rihanna & Miley Cyrus Garner 0 Nominations.
4. Surprise: Jay Z Garners 9 Nominations Whilst Kendrick Lamar Garners 7.
Snub: J. Cole Excluded From All Major Rap Categories.
5. Surprise: Lorde Garners 4 Nominations.
Snub: Lorde is not Nominated for “Best New Artist” nor is Ariana Grande.
6. Surprise: Pharrell Garners 7 Nominations.
Snub: R&B's leading ladies 'Keyshia Cole, Brandy, Kelly Rowland & Ciara' Garners 0 Nominations.
In conclusion.
Interesting. I was almost certain Ariana would receive at least 2 nominations. Most likely she'll be in the next awards show. As little as she means to me as both a singer and performer, I think she more so than a lot of these nominees deserves to be here for the simple fact that the atmosphere of her music in comparison to other artists' exudes an abundance of fresh air. Copy-sh, somewhat, but good nonetheless. Oh well, I'm somewhat satisfied with these nominations. I hope Kendrick slams this award show because his album, the quality and everything, was above and beyond. Drake? Decent, but shallow. Kendrick's album beasts everyone else's. Hopefully he steals the show.
ReplyDeleteJesus I have no idea who's going to win the airing categories. All I know is roar better not win best song. Also Adele already has this grammy in the bag. It's a bond song plus she's Adele.
ReplyDeleteMy thoughts while watching this: DON'T FALL DON'T FALL DON'T FALL DON'T FALL!!!
ReplyDeleteI don't think she does bad, but I understand it's not suited towards her voice very well, especially the low pre-chorus. But the If I Were A Boy parts slayed, and her performance in general was great, and that is a KILLER (freakum) dress.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Lotus is as qualified for a Grammy as say, Stripped was. It got a lot of mixed reviews, and it was honestly embarrassing in sales. Your Body had about one week to see some light, but then it just died. Just a Fool went absolutely nowhere. I'm pretty sure the Lotus plant is dead in the pot.
ReplyDeleteI definitely don't think Roar is Grammy worthy (same with Brave), but neither was Applause really. Diamonds or Stay was definitely way more qualified for an award than Roar, same with Wrecking Ball, mayyybe We Can't Stop but that's a little more of a stretch.
Agree agree agree with the J. Cole snub, as well as Lorde and Ariana, and all the much-deserving R&B ladies.
Unstoppable and flawless. And she's performing this year again. #hallelujah
ReplyDeleteThis was one of her performances where idiots were like "she's supporting a fascist police state because ILLUMINATIIIII11!!!!111!!!!111!1!!1".
ReplyDeleteI totally agree, Lotus does not deserve to be nominated. As much as I love Christina, it was the blandest album she's ever made. Even Bionic had something special to it, but Lotus was just a wannabe Stripped (And Army of Me was just a wannabe Fighter, she even used the same damn adjectives...) and her total lack of interest in promoting it made it even worse. And even worse is Katy's Roar, which is a ridiculous song considering that she said that the whole album was gonna have a "new and darker sound". If she wins that award I just hope that she gives it to Miley, Demi or Imagine Dragons, they definetly deserve it much more than her.
ReplyDeleteIf you're implying that there's been sexism in the choices then I'm sorry but I have to disagree. Simply, there were more men releasing music this year (even though it may look just like the opposite since all the music we discover through this blog is made by women) and let's face it, bar one or two exceptions men have also had more quality. I wouldn't be mad at the number of nominees of each gender but at the exclusion of some great artists (of both genders) in benefit of much poorer ones coffkatycoff
ReplyDeleteim actually happy lorde was nominated but then again im the only person in the world who actually seems to like her so thats cute . http://25.media.tumblr.com/0f953942a749d79fb63adf69e171ec05/tumblr_mxcpq1rv2f1ql5yr7o1_500.gif
ReplyDelete"Roar" is the end of the road for music industry. SHAME! The only person who can save the night is Bruno Marz, but we all know that he NEVER wins. I don't know why. The WORST moment in my life will happen if Taylor Swift wins Best album of the yers, for the second time.
ReplyDeleteLove this chic
ReplyDeleteI don't see anything special here. It looks like Eminen's "Slim Shady" performance at Mtv music award. Trash!
ReplyDeleteI don't like this Celine Dion performance. The one she sang "All by my self" is more epic. She was on fire that day.
ReplyDeleteI expected Ariana and Miley to get at least a couple of nominations. Also, If Kendrick doesn't win best rap album I'm DONE with the Grammys ( I feel like I say this every year) LOL.
ReplyDeleteHello B... How are you? How are your studies going?
ReplyDeleteAs for Ariana - my point exactly. I was hoping that she would have garnered a "Best New Artist" nomination and/or perhaps a "Best Pop Solo Performance" nomination for 'Baby I/Tattooed Heart'.
I hope Pink wins song of the year but honestly as long as Katy Perry doesn't win... I really don't understand how Roar even got on the list for Song of Year.. with all those cliche lyrics
ReplyDeleteYou stole this straight from another website... lol
ReplyDeleteWell, of course. You can tell by the way it's written/presented that it's not coming from the 1st person. I stated that. I just happen to agree with this list. :/
ReplyDeleteOH GOD YES!!
ReplyDeleteI LOVE BIONIC! Don't be coming for that!! https://24.media.tumblr.com/69370485618a637df6c7178610933ab4/tumblr_mxdv4lFQgI1rk6ikdo1_400.gif
ReplyDeleteI think the 9 weeks at number one would have me believe otherwise. [https://24.media.tumblr.com/bd9f2b69a96a3251baa4d5303985b5cb/tumblr_mjp7xzKJBI1rxwfllo1_500.gif ] Also I'm really liking "ribs"- the song. Not the food.
ReplyDeletePerhaps next year she'll get some nods? I'm not going to pretend I understand how this process works, so I assume it could happen!
ReplyDeleteI have to agree.
ReplyDelete"...plus she's Adele", true but I wonder how long that'll last for. I reckon one more album before the industry starts to cool for her.
ReplyDeleteYou can be excited for the both of us ;)
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vp7h_Yrndv0 [For anyone interested]
ReplyDeleteHow are we feeling about the comments that Vince brought Tamar those nods? (Not that I'm saying they're undeserved)
ReplyDeleteIdk we'll see though. Hopefully she lasts for a bit.
ReplyDeleteJosh sensei figured out that Bangerz dropped just outside of the eligible time slot for this year's Grammies.
ReplyDeleteI'm implying Leith that getting rid of different categories for male and female opens the door for sexism and that the expected results are immediate.
ReplyDeleteI am sorry but no way were there more deserving male nominees in every damn category than females. With the exception of course of...children's Album.
And no offense Leith, but I doubt you heard every album in every category which dropped this year. ;-)
So what we have here is an all too familiar pattern v. you liking more male works of the music you heard this year.
Undeserving artists nominated v. deserving artists not being nominated is indeed also a pattern as old as the awards themselves. :-)
HAHAHAHAHAHAH WHAT THE FACT THAT THE GRAMMYS TOTALLY IGNORED THE FACT THAT ROAR IS THE SAME EXACT SONG AS BRAVE IS HILARIOUS
ReplyDeleteShe's generic. Pink is good but Gaga can outsing her anytime.
ReplyDeleteoh no you awakened a beast people will destroy you for this comment
ReplyDeletei think gaga and pink have two very different voices - pink's voice has more characteristic but gaga is much more versatile
either way you cannnnooooot deny how incredible pinks grammy performance of glitter in the air was that year
theres no need to attack each other here so i hope people wont overreact to this comment - gaga and pink are both great
It's a troll Jeremiah. He was posting the same nonsense re Mariah Carey..claiming Gaga is a better singer at her best than Mariah was at her best. I think enough said about that fool. ;-)
ReplyDeletemiley, ariana, and gaga do deserve atleast one grammy this year
ReplyDeletei feel like the grammys didnt nominate miley because her obvious hit was we cant stop and songs like that dont really get nominated for grammys
but wrecking ball should have definitely gotten nominated
the way was a big hit and so was applause
Ahh Tom Hardy... I love him! LOL
ReplyDeleteI agree that there should be separated categories for men and women, but the fact that there were more men nominees doesn't mean that there was sexism at all. I mean, what if it had been the opposit? Would you say that there's been sexism against men? I doubt it. I'm gonna avoid discussing which albums had enugh quality and which didn't because a) It's pretty much subjective and none of us has enough knowledge in music to talk about that b) we have very little in common when it comes to music taste. I'll only say that it's true that Miley deserved a nominee while Katy could have gone to fry asparagus (spanish soft way to say "go to hell")
ReplyDeleteHey, I was bashing Lotus, not Bionic! http://vinescope.com/the-scariest-feeling-in-the-world-242.html
ReplyDeleteUhm yes, if EVERY category in EVERY genre had had more women than men nominees..I would also have called sexism. Though granted..I might not have noticed it. :-)
ReplyDeleteBut once it had been pointed out to me that this was in fact the case...definitely!
But you will not likely see that happening and if it did, MAYBE one could make a case for coincidence but like I say...it's a very old and familiar pattern seen in every area of western society.
I hear you disagreeing but I don't see you having any grounds for that disagreement. Still, you are of course totally free to disagree. :-)
I am a bit surprised you feel we have "very little" in common when it comes to music taste. I had the impression though at times diverging, we also had a couple of overlaps going. :-)
My ground for disagreeing is that instead of thinking that the ones who made the list were some completely idiots (which seems to me the most probable situation just by observing which artist got nominated and which didn't) you thought that it was because of sexism. People who truly believe in gender equality don't think of how many women and men are selected for whatever they have to be selected, but if they really do deserve to be selected or not. Gender equility consists in not giving a fuck if the other person is a woman or a man, but just thinking of him/her as a person, regardless gender.I mean, we could also think that the nominees selectors were also racist because there are more white than black people, or that they were homophobic because there were more heterosexual people than homosexual people.
ReplyDeleteAbout our common tastes in music, I said so because despite having coincided in some artists (Kelly Clarkson, Allison Krauss (both of which I've listened quite little actually), C. Aguilera (which I think you haven't listened much either, although I may be wrong) and Billy Joel) we pretty much like different kinds of music. While I prefer mostly rock and punk (Simple Plan, Queen, Bon Jovi, Evanescence, Lenny Kravitz...) your prefer country and older music (Barbra Streisand, Anouk, Alisson Krauss, Judy Garland...), and in pop our like/dislike coincidences are usually a hit or a miss. Of course, I'm not looking down on you likes and I know you won't be looking down on mine, I'm just pointing that we actually difer more in that area than it may look like at first sight.
Still seems to me we have more overlap than you seem to think. Even if our most favorite genres differ. Anouk btw is neither Country nor older music. ;-)
ReplyDeleteYou presume I think there was conscious sexism going on. I did not. I think many men, being men and therefor not personally subject to it, are not aware of sexism in society unless it is blatant. Nor aware of the naturally resulting subconscious sexism in their own worldviews.
To use you and me as an example, you seem to be more into male singers than I am. As a result you probably heard more albums by male artists than I have and I heard more by female.
This makes for an already skewered to one sex advantage to start with. Not being aware of that could lead to a subconscious sexist view on which sex delivered more good albums.
Anyway 'more" is beside the point as the question at hand is ..is it really likely that in each category in each genre, of the best 5 albums 3,4 or 5 were by men?
Now, not to suggest sales numbers go to quality but just as an example of a stat possibly undermining that claim..let's look at the top 15 chart hits of the Billboard top 100 for the year 2012. (i gues that would be just the pop genre)
That top 15 consists of 7 women solo, 3 bands featuring female singers, 2 solo males, 1 male duo and two all male bands.
My point exactly "people who truly believe in gender equality look only at quality, not gender" but we already established many moons ago that it is enormously debatable whether the Grammy nominaters look only at quality.
And considering the prevalence of a pattern suggesting sexist worldviews (conscious or subconscious/deliberate or not) in so many areas of society, I find your assumptions the Grammy people are exempt of that tendency, to be naive.
And you still fail to argue a reasonable basis for such an assumption.
btw gender equality does not mean "not giving a fuck" whether the other person is male or female.
It means not thinking one ought to have more rights than the other.
No we could not assume racism because factually there are more white people than black people in the US (and Britain. The it seems only other nation eligible for the Grammy)
Actually 79.9 % of the US population is white, 12,8 is black, 4.4 Asian.
But the percentage of women is about 51%
Percentage gay is of course unclear but I don't think anybody ever went past estimating 20% at most.
I LOVE this performance. Her voice sounds so POWERFULL, and even when her voice cracks and at the end, when she can't reach the notes of the original track, she soudns AMAZING. This was the Celine Dion I used to respect and like, not all this lip sync mode, just to make the world believe that she's perfect. This video prooves that even when she was younger, she was not perfect. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. I love "raw" singing.
ReplyDeleteFunny you say that since Gaga released the most generic pop album to date this past year.
ReplyDeleteoh! Those lips!
ReplyDeleteBy "older music" I meant the likes of Barbra Streisand which to be honest I had no idea which genre they suit in. Yeah, we do have some likes in common, but I think that in general we difer. Sorry for the misclassification of Anouk, I actually haven't listened too much to her because her voice isn't definetly my kind ^^U
ReplyDeleteI'm sorry but considering my arguments of why the Billboard is not sexist are not reasonable and then talk about subconscious sexism doen't seem fair to me. You don't know if there were more men or women choosing the nominees and you just have two examples (you and me) of that subconscious sexism, and I know a few people in my inner circles whose tastes negate it (and surely more will come to mind).
Billboard is updated every week and so, there will be times where there are more men than women (like this very week) and viceversa, so that's a quite shaky argument. Also, those percentages of races living in the USA won't probably match the percentages of races that work in music.
Your definition of gender equality was pretty much the same as mine but expressed in a more politely way. My point was "I don't give a fuck if you are woman or man, I'm not gonna give you any preference because of that".
let't not forget this perfomance:
ReplyDeleteGenial and powerfull

Both Miley and Gaga released outside the cut off date...
ReplyDeleteMaybe Katy Perry will finally get that Grammy.... http://25.media.tumblr.com/b4da979bfb1866465962ec2f4337ac39/tumblr_mi2h46if1F1qeu2t7o1_500.gif
ReplyDeletewouldn't 9 weeks at number one suggest otherwise ? music hits saturation point very fast and i was more referencing the overwhelming negative reaction last time i mentioned lorde. http://25.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m8rlxayHio1ql5yr7o1_400.gif
ReplyDeleteI don't think you know what "generic" means.
ReplyDeleteNot saying it isn't generic, but albums like PRISM beat it by miles in the generic category.
Was this even necessary?
ReplyDeleteBrave - Sara Bareilles & Roar - Katy Perry... Why do I feel like they're taking the piss with this one? Absolutely hilarious.
ReplyDeleteBut I have to say, Roar was a pretty big song, and we know the Grammys are more about popularity than quality nowadays. When a song is as big as Roar was, you kind of have to nominate it or it just doesn't make sense. It was like that with Gaga's Poker Face. I don't think she'll win, though. Story of her life.
Definitely some snubs, like Janelle and even Tegan and Sara, whose album, especially their single "Closer", was near perfection for me.
Diva, you do you plan on posting Gaga's Alan Carr performances? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMVxLPLsshA and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D4YGec8z8hg Her acoustic solo version of DWUW has her sounding better than she has in years. Would love to hear your thoughts.
I was so sure that Ariana was gonna get some nominations. I knew Tamar was gonna get at least one. It was a nice suprise to Lana and Lorde. BUT CAN WE PLEASE TALK HOW REGINA SPEKTOR HAS NEVER EVER BEEN NOMINATED?!?!
ReplyDeleteShe's a strong candidate for AOTY, so you'd better be prepared for the worst moment of your life.
ReplyDeleteNgl I liked Lotus, it was basic, but in a good way. Of course I'd never consider it Grammy material. And I was so upset with Roar because I did think it'd follow through with Katy's darker sound like ET or something, but it's literally the brightest, poppest song she's ever made. I don't think Katy Cat's gonna be able to let go of the trophy once she gets it in her hands though.
ReplyDeleteHmm, I definitely think there were a lot of songs about as popular as Roar that the committee could've easily gave a nomination for. Songs that were more critically acclaimed also.
ReplyDeleteI thought We Can't Stop or Wrecking Ball were a lot more qualified for nominations than Roar or Brave. I feel like since the Grammy committee's so prestigious, they might not have been fans of Miley's sexual and gritty image, which might've been why they didn't want to give her noms. But Ariana was so worthy of a New Artist nomination, James Blake can't even be considered a new artist, and Ed Sheeran even performed at last year's show, so is he really new either?
