Tis the season for Christmas music! With that being so, I'd like to know: what are you listening to this festive period? The year has seen many of our talented Divas releasing albums dedicated to the season, but I'll be interested to know if any songs from those sets have made your playlist this year. If so, then let me know which, in the comments!
More impressive than the amount of albums we've seen come our way, is that two of those releases have birthed original tunes- Leona Lewis' One More Sleep and Kelly Clarkson's Underneath The Tree- that have actually managed to give Mariah's All I Want For Christmas Is you a run for her airplay money. Something practically unheard of in years gone by! I suppose subsequent Christmases will tell us if these newbies truly have the staying power of the Carey classic, but it doesn't take away from the fact that they have been all over radio this year.
So come on friends, share the Christmas song(s) that have been keeping your spirits festive this month.
Thoughts?
Donny Hathaway - "This Christmas".
ReplyDeleteI, absolutely, love this song and this Man's voice; soulful & elegant.
He is truly missed.

ReplyDeleteI'm a fan of Whitneys "joy to the World"
ReplyDeleteI love the church vibe
ReplyDeleteRight? It starts of slow and lilting and then just explodes with a gospel sound.
ReplyDeleteLove this so much, I love her voice. I think like Mariah she sounds best when in gospel.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20_eed97Lzw love this
ReplyDeleteI agree.
ReplyDeleteBoth her & Mariah have a personal relationship with God; they're singing to their Saviour when performing Gospel music and o the emotion is greater and much more genuine.
Case in Point: STUNNING VOCALS!!!!!!!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXO3Hk5FHlg
I haven't this till now, wow this is amazing.
ReplyDeleteA few other songs I really like, since you guys are playing ball (Thanks very much for the quick comments!):
ReplyDeleteKate Bush- "Snowflake". There's a particular cadence in here that always make me melt.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vEWMYfcg1o8
Tori Amos- "Winter": More seasonal than Christmassy, but still makes me think of the holidays.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C-IsiAfjhck
Joni Mitchell- "River": One of my all time favourite songs. Ever. Period.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpFudDAYqxY#
Christina Aguilera- "Silent Night": Reminds me of yesteryear.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nVbGvoljwfc
Darlene Love: "Christmas (Baby please come home)": Let's be real for a second. There would be no "All I Want For Christmas" without this song. Mariah even covered it on her first holiday album. LOVE it.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UV8x7H3DD8Y
even at speed her diction and phrasing remains flawless!
ReplyDeleteLol! I'll try remember that. Here's the Whitney version, for anyone interested :

I know that people on this site are gonna be super divided on this, but I really do love Ariana Grande's new Christmas EP, her original song, Snow in California is gorgeous. And I also like her minimalist cover of Baby, It's Cold Outside from two years ago with Mac Miller. So to ease the tension of me liking Ariana Grande, here, have my favorite Christmas video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gMkMT-7RfP0
ReplyDeleteI have my own way to get through Christmas http://www.bfotos.com/albums/compras/almohada-brazo.jpg
ReplyDeleteI didn't realize she got that big.
ReplyDeletehahaha perfect
ReplyDeleteWell, we at least know she didn't skip any Christmas Dinners Past ;-)
ReplyDeleteI swear I almost posted Snowflake! :-)
ReplyDeleteDid you see the one of her doing a "Tradition" of walking her dog in the snow dressed in THAT?!
ReplyDeleteI love all the ones mentioned in the article and comments section (especially Kelly, omg Underneath the Tree has been my SONG) but for the moment: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ua-216ZtNLY
ReplyDeleteWell she was pregnant with twins so she got pretty huge by the time those demonic kids ate their way out of her stretch out cervix.
ReplyDeleteWhats even worse is her "Moments" video...
ReplyDeleteHaha that explains the theory that the pregnancy hurt her vocals.
ReplyDeleteReally?
ReplyDeleteLeona's and Kelly's amateur carols don't even get close to Mariah's. Even though, both Ladies tried to copy the whole thing. So sad, DD. Shame on you!
I don't know if it's DD editing your posts again or just the huge boredom of reading your constant praise of Mariah, but everytime you post all I read is: bla bla bla I have a creepy obsession with Mariah bla bla bla
ReplyDeleteThis is starting to turn into a Mariah thread.
ReplyDeleteTherefor...

ReplyDeleteHey, you come and listen to the radio over here and tell me whats getting played more! Regardless of that, I'm sure I said on a different post that i'm not feeling either song! So don't try coming for me boi- I'm feeling crazy tonight!! https://31.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_mc0ie4IwXL1riy0uno1_400.gif
ReplyDeleteI haven't listened to it...
ReplyDeleteLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOVE these guys
ReplyDeleteIt's gorgeous, right!
ReplyDeleteWas going to do a Leona Vs Mariah with this song...may still do so.
ReplyDeleteI did indeed. Let's let everyone else enjoy that "moment", too. http://i.dailymail.co.uk/i/pix/2013/12/22/article-2527841-1A3FD37400000578-711_634x687.jpg
ReplyDeleteNo, seriously, if I was Mariah I'd be totally freaked out...
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! That whole album is perfect for the time of year....obviously LOL
ReplyDeleteI know! So would I.
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XopuknnRX2I
ReplyDeleteI always watch this performance once Christmas rolls around. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xg953f_crystal-kay_music "Journey" isn't really a Christmas song, but it's a nice winter ballad.
ReplyDeleteI was just listening to Kate Bush earlier. I ,for some reason, had the urge to listen to "Running Up That Hill".
ReplyDeleteNot for nothing Eric but that change doesn't make you very anonymous. ;-)

ReplyDeletei should be listening to some kind of diva ballad but this seems to be my tune for the season, although vicky vox (the big girl) can seriously belt.

ReplyDeleteMy friends looked me up on google and saw pictures of Celine Dion, Mariah etc alongside me and I was like wtf? I traced it al back to this site. So I'm trying to prevent more of it from happening.
ReplyDeleteLOL You're friends made fun of that?
ReplyDeleteNo I don't think they noticed lol. But I did and was like "what"?
ReplyDeleteHahaha you were like.....
ReplyDeletehttp://i352.photobucket.com/albums/r349/reddragon2_photos/thatssotruecom_1209_1329759291.gif
LOL. PLOT TWIST: I was Mariah Carey the entire time.
ReplyDeleteI like Mariah too but come on. Don't expect Mariah to retain her pipes soon they'll rust... as people always say, "You don't know what you have until you lose it."
ReplyDeleteMariah's Oh Holy Night
ReplyDeleteWhitney Houston whole Christmas album :D
You guys need to watch Mimi's interview!! it was damn hilarious!!!! those shades were deadly

LOL Hi Mariah.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4mg2fJpEcFU I love this. My only critic would be to quit the throaty belts but I guess that song needs some edge to it ...
ReplyDeleteI'm adoring Tori Kelly so much right now!
ReplyDeleteShe's underrated, it's not fair that she's not as big as some of the talentless "divas" that are out there!
By far one of the best interviews. Mariah seems very humble and seems comfortable and genuine.
ReplyDeleteI am obsessed with this interview omg. And Andy Cohen is the best
ReplyDeleteI swear she was pregnant for 19 months.
ReplyDeleteI loved this. It's always great to see Mariah interviewed by people she's comfortable around- as is the case whenever she's around Alan carr http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_ZLO9X7YEM

HAHAHHAAAH. I was in stitches watching their Blurred lines parody.
ReplyDeleteI feel like I should be by an open fire with wine, listening to that.
ReplyDeleteThat woman is too much. Seriously, her music is something else.
ReplyDeleteI'm guessing the down votes are because of the gif...lol
ReplyDeleteshare, let's all cry together
ReplyDeleteLOL!
ReplyDeleteNever heard this before. It's so weird, despite listening to Jazmine so much I still didn't know what she looks like. She definitely doesn't look like her album covers. And since you brought up the song, here's Christina doing what she does best.... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ftva4G2vmDw
ReplyDeleteLol, so you haven't seen much of Jazmine's live singing? And I agree, she doesn't look much like her album covers. For one they nip and tuck her with Photoshop....
ReplyDeleteNah, mine was because I am just sick and tired of Mariah's song.
ReplyDeleteThough that gif IS bloody irritating. ;-)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UigDxay6W34
ReplyDeleteYesterday I listened for the first time to Mariah's "Merry Christmas II You" and it's fantastic. My favorite tracks are: Oh Santa, Christmas Time Is In the Air Again, The First Noel/Born Is the King, O Come All Ye Faithful, One child and of course All I Want For Christmas Is You :D
ReplyDeleteout of all the pop stars who release christmas songs i honestly mariah has no competition here - all i want for christmas is a classic
ReplyDeleteits just such a happy song with awesome vocals
i do love kellys christmas album too!!!
but shes always been one of my faves - i still love - my grown up christmas list
talk all you want, streisand and dion....everyone else....6 o'clock
ReplyDeletethis is so good ! Pentatotix and Tori teamed up to call some of their followers to do a mash-up of random songs. Oh and Tori sustained a whistle G6 !!
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmQOYEc3qxU
the note is at 10:40 :)
ReplyDeleteThe Queen of Pop vocals, IMHO.
ReplyDeleteKelly rarely utilizes head voice and in most case has been accessed above the A5 mark. However, that is not where it begins. Most notably but not technically. Kelly's shown use of Head Voice at E5. It has a Very strong, thick, and operatic sound that easily resonates throughout a wholesome venue without a Microphone. She showcases that in her small rendition of Waiting on My Dearie in her school play. She was around 15/16 at the time. When her sound is connected it's very strong. Clarkson's voice is very nice and powerful in more classical stylings. She also tends to be more flexible and versatile with her Dynamics as well. When Kelly uses her voice as an instrument the delivery is so great. She definitely has a great throat and knows how to use it masterfully, when she chooses. Shen she's sung songs like Why Don't You Try (live), Because Of You by Tony Bennett, Baby Blue Eyes and Changes the skill is very evident and at a high degree. I wish she'd sing more songs that compliment the characteristics of her voice & the skill she has as a vocalist. I also love how she's able to easily take on big climaxes seamlessly and nail them. Her vocal delivery is highly superb when she's actually utilizing her true skills. Can't wait to hear more from her. It should be known that Clarkson possesses One of the greatest voices in pop music ever, and in general.
ReplyDeleteNo, her voice isn't strong. Her fach has nothing to do with it. Mariah Carey, one of the greatest vocalists to come along, is a Light Lyric. Her voice is absolutely strong. And singer singer is someone who uses their voice in an extraordinary way, which she hasn't in my opinion. Diana is matter of fact to the track. No finesse, innovation, wit or anything. She's someone I personally consider Karaoke. Sorry lol
ReplyDeleteExactly I agree with that fully.
ReplyDeleteIt is true!
ReplyDeleteI hate her voice
ReplyDeleteI almost did.
ReplyDeleteIndeed, she controls well her voice - transfering in many songs from the power of her nasal abilites - (she hold's her reserve well) and yes, many singer's do - unto "boisting" their diaphrams then continuing the range. No "natural" singer can do this well, but many with schooling do. It's hard to do. I haven't been able to determine Franklin's ability or Ann Wilson's - but Barbara seems to have the better control of her D's and even C's.
ReplyDelete
