[New Music] Candice Glover - "Cried"

Are we all remembering last year's American Idol winner, Candice Glover? If not, it doesn't really make much difference to anything, but let me tell you this is one lady who can SING! So make sure to take a listen before you exit the post!

To those who do remember her, I'm sure you're pumped to hear her first single and see the direction the American Idol team have decided to take her in! Well wait no longer and take a listen to Cried, below.

This was certainly a brave, and grown choice for a first single!  It's the kind of gut-wrencher I could imagine hearing Jazmine Sullivan record. Piano, strings and plenty of room for Candice to stretch her Gospel-infused voice, it certainly gave me my RDA of angst and pain. I'm just not sure how well it will fair, chart wise.

Thoughts?

  1. Her tone wasn't too pleasant here but I do like the song.

  2. I love how Mariah completely misses her in the GIF

  3. I like the song but I feel as if it was missing something

  4. Who else melted at the at 0:41 mark? That run was SIIIIIIIIIIICK. The song is brilliant. I do agree that it sounds like a Jaz Sullivan record. Both girls can sing their butts off. Brilliant song. Vocally? She's capable of more but an awesome delivery. Way to go Candice!

  5. Same here. I felt since it was Candice, she was capable of doing more. But still, I felt what was displayed was adequate.

  6. We know she doesn't have a good throwing arm. LOL. Also Glitter always misses when it comes to Mariah if you know what I mean.

  7. I wish I could up vote this a thousand times

    ReplyDelete
  8. lol thanks. I never really listened to that much of the album (Besides lead the way because the vocals are stunning).

    But the movie is terrible.

  11. And the irony of that is I find it a lot easier to understand Lee than Ariana, and she's Korean??? LOL!

  12. With Whistles? When was this? May I see?

    ReplyDelete
  13. I figured lol But in a way, yes, but then again no. It's weird really haha. She was a step up, though. It was definitely a breath of fresh air from the many train wrecks who performed. I will admit that the girl is good.

  14. Supreme? It depends. I think of it in terms of certain things. Mainstream doesn't impress me a lot. If I had to name a few who I consider excellent (although they, too, have their flaws) Amber Riley, Patti (yup, she's STILL in the game), Monica N, Ledisi, Mariah, Kelly Clarkson (when she actually SINGS), Jennifer (when she doesn't scream), and to some degree Jessie J. A lot of talent you'll find across the Nation like Monica, Leah McFall, and some others. I think Tamar Braxton is getting up there, she just needs more consistency.

  20. I'm gross period....

  21. I've only seen reviews of it. It looks so bad I don't even want to review it. Even Mariah bashes it now.

heres a great review of it :http://blip.tv/todds-pop-song-reviews/glitter-a-movie-review-by-toddintheshadows-5425037

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oh wow, she actually DID go to a C7 live and whistle. Okay, not bad at all. Those are definitely whistles. But none of the other live performances were whistles. I'm not impressed, but surprised lol

    ReplyDelete
  25. Haha thank you, he is funny as heck

    ReplyDelete
  26. why do you feel the need to tell me you're not impressed? lol i know you're not, you have made that very clear throughout every single post. i just wanting to show that she does it live, i don't want anyone to think that it's fake or anything.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Simply because I wanted to lol

  28. No problem. :)

    Meh.... Still not impressed. ^^

  31. Okay, so it seems you take them an octave lower. Those songs normally range from F3 to about G5. So the newer arrangement would be somewhere around F2-G4, which is within the Baritone range. Why is it that you avoid Melisma? Is your voice not very agile? And in general, how would you describe the weight of your voice?

    ReplyDelete
  32. Primo Uomo Assoluto27 November 2013 at 08:24

I think more men should sing in a middle voice range :D too many guys shouting their heads off to sing alto (not tenor but alto, between A3-A4). I can go pretty high, but I like singing the most in baritone/dramatic tenor range, I often sing "diva" type songs an octave down or an up a whole tone and down an octave :P

  33. Honestly, I believe so...

Prior to the abuse, I had never thought about 'Men' in a sexual way at all. However, the abuse started when I was 7 years old and lasted until I was 10/11 so, technically speaking, I was still a pubescent and in the prime years of my development stage - who knows? I was far too young and fragile to be thinking sexually whether it was about 'Men' or 'Women'. I, also, was raised in a very conservative household and was not exposed to much. Anyway, by time I entered adolescence - 12/13 - as much as I had become, somewhat, of a social recluse, my feelings/orientation changed and I felt myself starting to become attracted to Men. I was SO confused about my sexuality for years.

My Doctor/Psychologist told me that my situation, to an extent, is, largely, psychological - the sexual abuse by another Male is what triggered my orientation change and my mind & body became, subconsciously, attracted to it too. My entire childhood was taken from me; anxiety, depression etc. As I was saying to 'Robin' before, without sounding sanctimonious, I believed, for years, that my "looks" were both a 'blessing and a curse' which is what lead to the abuse. I couldn't tell how many times disgusting older Men, and Women, have tried it on with me throughout my life.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Primo Uomo Assoluto27 November 2013 at 12:15

I'm very sorry you had to go through that, no child should have to suffer abuse. I do think sexuality is a fluid thing, and people can transition at different points their lives or just settle at one. Sexuality is a lot more complicated than people think.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Never said you cannot develop sexual behavior as a result of outside influences, such as Coleman experienced. But that is trauma..not imo your sexuality. To say that is your sexuality to me, seems like saying PTSD is a character trait.
Anyway, the way you put it made it sound like that was what you were saying..that people aren't born gay and that those who say they are , are "idiotic".
Seeing as this is a blog frequented by some very young gays, I am glad you refined your statement. :-)

  36. United States of America

"The official poverty measure is published by the United
States Census Bureau and shows that:

In 2010, 46.9 million people were in poverty, up
from 37.3 million in 2007 -- the fourth consecutive
annual increase in the number of people in poverty .
This is the largest number in the 52 years for which
poverty rates have been published (DeNavas-Walt 2011,
    p. 14).

The 2010 poverty rate was 15.1 percent, up from 12.5
percent in 1997. This is the highest poverty rate
since 1993, but 7.3 percentage points lower than the
poverty rate in 1959, the first year for poverty
    estimates. (DeNavas-Walt 2011, p. 14).

The 2010 poverty rate for Hispanics was 26.6
    percent, for Blacks 27.4 percent.

In 2010, the poverty rate increased for children
    under age 18 from 20.7 percent to 22.0 percent. (DeNavas-Walt 2010
    p. 14).

20.5 million Americans live in extreme poverty. This
means their family’s cash income is less than
half of the poverty line, or about $10,000 a
year for a family of four (DeNavas-Walt 2011,
    p. 19).

49.9 million people or 16.3 percent of the American
people, do not have medical insurance (DeNavas-Walt 2011, p.
    23)."

  37. Thank you...

I completely agree with you in regards to sexuality being "complicated". As I said before to another commenter, I have come across numerous people within the fashion/modelling industry who have told me that they "knew they were attracted to the same sex/gender from as young as 5/6 years old" whereas others have said that they were "previously heterosexual" but have 'transitioned' into another orientation out of curiosity.

As for me, I will never know if I was ever meant to be 'purely Heterosexual' or 'Gay/Bi-Sexual' because my sexuality was, more or less, 'influenced' by external behaviours. I never had the chance to experience sexuality in a 'mature- developmental' way as a pubescent/adolescent. I used to think that my sexuality was forced upon me but, nonetheless, I have come to accept who I am and that is a 'Bi.' Man.

I'm sorry you had to experience your pains also... My goodness. Was it a case of child trafficking? What Country are you from? By the way, are you 'Gay, Bi or Straight'?

    ReplyDelete
  38. Damn... I too share a similar indifference to having to get my hands dirty but that was due to how I was raised. My grandma taught me how to shoot a long bow, a compound, and how to throw knives. Let's just say I've seen the worst of what those could do. Also, we used to hunt hogs annually and I used to have gut 300+ pound pigs by myself. And when I messed up, I got punished. I used to hate it because our knives were never sharp enough to separate the intestines without spilling the content "chitterlings deary"...lol

It might not sound like much and I've had to do much worse myself, but the hogs were intwined in my life and I had to get over myself.. I'm glad I don't have to gut them now though. It might explain my hate for pork.

  39. Love Mylene! Though in the French music scene, Françoise Hardy is my personal favorite singer :)

    ReplyDelete
  40. DD congratulations! this is a milestone! a great achievement! honestly how do you feel??

    ReplyDelete
  41. is it me or she was so shrill on the belted notes? anyway i hate her dress and i feel bad for her because a pap told her that she'll only have 5-minute career with that performance.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Almost too perfect.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W6DmHGYy_xk&feature=youtu.be&t=1m58s

    ReplyDelete
  43. Yeah about F2-G4 seems like the best. I think my voice has agility, it's not very heavy when I belt, I think I just have piss poor melisma technique. I've tried trust, and it's a hit or miss about 98% of the time. Sometimes it sounds pretty darn good, other times....I laugh at myself. I really wanna do runs, I just don't know how I suppose.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I hate singing in the upper fourth, I feel so vulnerable. Lower range and middle range is the best placement for my voice and phrasing. I can barely phrase above an F4 (w/o straining and keeping a good amount of resonance). I get out of breath as well faster when I try.

    ReplyDelete
  45. LOL you're talking like gaga is perfect. you said miley is desperate, can't gaga called the same when she was dressed in meat. clearly you're a delusional stan

    ReplyDelete
  46. The movie was bad, not the worst but the soundtrack was great, it really didn't deserve to flop, it was released in 9/11 anyway so no one really cared about her loverboy ;)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Her vocal were fantastic then. wait 9/11 affected public opinion on the song?

    ReplyDelete
  50. Agreed. You see all of the newer males in the Industry and they all throw their larynx's all over the place. And for what? To generate a constipated sound? Just stay within your bounds damn it.

    ReplyDelete
  51. Please...

'Men' have not sounded 'Masculine', in popular/contemporary music, for the past 20 years or so and I doubt that will change anytime soon. Imce upon a time, Women would DRENCH their panties at the sound of a 'True Male voice' - 1940-1980.

As of late, the mainstream- music industry, mostly, considers the 'Falsetto- bound, Light- Tenor's' to be where the money is, as thats what this generation of pubescent/adolescent Girls seem to like, and it's so unfortunate.

    ReplyDelete
  52. It was actually written by Jazmine Sullivan, so that's probably why it sounds like her :)

    ReplyDelete
  53. Is it just me or at the beginning of the two verses does she sound a little like Mariah, timbre-wise?

    ReplyDelete
  54. I love Jazmine's writing style. It truly embodies what real R&B is supposed to be. Nothing too lyrically complex but lyrics that set up for a strong melismatic presence. I just wish Jazmine would have kept it because I'm no fan of Candice's voice on this track.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Bridgitte girl, I've seen your videos.... the very same criticism can be applied to your voice.

    ReplyDelete
  56. You know, I hate seeing comments like this. It makes me wonder what kind of vile, hateful individual is writing such things. Things have got pretty nasty on this blog, but never have they been personal. What is your problem with DD anyway? Did he shit on your fave in a recent post or something?

    ReplyDelete
  57. Precisely. It's almost as though the Industry is trying to convey that Baritones will not suffice. All you hear are these high male voices, and the faux ones of course. This is why I enjoy watching singing competitions. You find a lot of different, authentic voices. A low note is just as good as a high note if you ask me. I find myself more entertained listening to the mid belts & lower notes. High notes now are overrated. What's funny is that these male singers can hardly go to high notes without closing their throats & elevating their larynx's to the roof. The tonality is completely different from the mid voice. It's very distasteful.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Have you heard that Jazmine quit because she felt as though her music was under appreciated? I'm so bummed -__-

    ReplyDelete
  59. Lol knock yourself out, ending was crap though. Tried to add some head voice in there, but it didn't work out.

    http://vocaroo.com/i/s0ZTiJKAndVm

    ReplyDelete
  60. As the biggest Jazmine Sullivan fan on earth, I'm all too familiar with it. But she's been teasing a new album on instagram.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Easily went down to Eb2, Baritone. LYRIC Baritone at that. The highest you went to was G#4, not bad. I'm not going to critique your tech 'cause I'm certain that you're aware of what you need to work on. All in all, that was actually good. Just gotta work on placing the sound properly and opening your throat, but nice. Your lower notes sound beautiful. Finally, a BARITONE VOICE. Man, if you work on the upper register, you could really show off some seriously awesome vocal feats. Lyric Baritones more so than any other voice type, I think, naturally have more reach.

    ReplyDelete
  62. In that case why don't you stop promoting the idea live singing by definition is poor, the way you do with such remarks as above?

    ReplyDelete
  63. I knew she was full of ishhh lol

    ReplyDelete
  64. It's a cute play with statistics indeed. But official figures are that there are 73.9 million children in the US with 16.7 million children living in food insecure households. That is about 1 in 4.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Haha can you critique me? I'm not that aware of what I need to work on now that you mention it. I think it would probably be projecting more by not tightening up my throat as I ascend, but I'm not positive. Thanks for the compliment as well, I've been working on my lower for a while, but I didn't know it sounded that well. I want to drop my larynx a lot, but I feel like I shouldn't try it without knowing the right technique to do it. Also, tips for opening your throat more?

    Thanks again :P

    ReplyDelete
  66. It was a clip of her singing in the studio and it sounded so good. It sounded more open but still in the mask. And she did a downward melisma to like E3. She was belting her typical D5s.

    ReplyDelete
  67. What does it mean when one posts just a period?

    ReplyDelete
  68. ps are you claiming her performance at the AMA's was a "note-cringey" (whatever that means) one?
Or are you referring to another according to you "note-cringey" performance you have seen me praise? If so which one?

    ReplyDelete
  69. Katy's singing is just crap like usual.

The Asian theme was hilarious. She looks ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  70. 'Mariah makes Ariana look a lot less good than she really is..."

Not to Ariana fans apparently. Many of them have taken to trolling Mariah's 'Emotions' video.

    ReplyDelete
  71. Hey Opie, what songs did you like from Bangerz?

I only *really* liked FU, On my Own, and Someone Else tbh. The vocals on those songs are amaze.

    ReplyDelete
  72. I live for that climax. She just does it so well.

Although she did miss a few notes throughout the song :(

And, either way, for wealth to exist...poverty must also exist. It's simple social Darwinism. And people who cannot even feed themselves, shouldn't be having kids to begin with. It's plain, simple and logical. Most of the environmental problems can be reduced to over-population, especially among those of lower socio-economic status.

  77. Where have you been Reiko? Your absence has lead to me now being considered the biggest Miley "stan" here. Surely you are not going to take that??? ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  78. Primo Uomo Assoluto28 November 2013 at 09:27

Good, great and "perfect" are three very different things. A live performance rarely is at the level of a studio recording.Plain and simple. You disagree? Show me a single live performance that is better sung/played than its studio counterpart.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Primo Uomo Assoluto28 November 2013 at 09:28

And nobody asked for the world views of a lonely middle aged unemployed lesbian, and yet here you are.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Again dear, it depends on what your definition of "better" is. I love btw how you now added "played" as well. It is clear you may be real good at playing "name that note" but you obviously know fuck all about music. It's not surprising .... considering.

    ReplyDelete
  81. It's impossible to do that because it's all relative to your definition of better. Do you mean note-perfect? Some might find certain performances are better because of superior delivery. Please clarify.

    ReplyDelete
  82. Sweetie, you are not royalty! You can drop the pretense you are speaking for more than just yourself.
Loving btw how your psychopathy reveals itself the more you post. :-)
So far you demonstrated hitting A: 1,2,4,7, B and D

  83. Primo Uomo Assoluto28 November 2013 at 09:43

:) Music theory is one my specialties, if you want we can play some now? Show me how much of a musical expert at music you are. Let's start with something simple such as...what are the notes on a half diminished dominant seventh in the key of E-flat minor? Or perhaps, why are the fourth and fifth scale degree triads the most important after the tonic? or what is it that makes a blues scale a blues scale as opposed to a simple minor scale? or perhaps we can get more scientific...if there are 100 cents in a half step and standard tuning is A-440, but you want to tune to Verdi tuning, how many cents would you need to de-tune?

    ReplyDelete
  84. Primo Uomo Assoluto28 November 2013 at 09:46

I mean better as in overall better sung from a technical point; better control, better intonation, better resonance, better coordination between registers, more effortless range, better breathe support and capacity, etc.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Primo Uomo Assoluto28 November 2013 at 09:50

And yet you are the one who hides her identity online, flies into a fit of range feeling quickly betrayed in online relationships, etc.
If I'm a sociopath, you are borderline :) no wonder you are alone and all dried up.

    ReplyDelete
  86. LOL Like I said, you may be real good at playing name that note but that's all. The very fact that you think knowing such theory makes you all knowing on music already says it all buddy.

So, you are 25 and have 10 years music education?

Let me guess, you started right after juvie? As therapy perhaps. Maybe the folks in charge were under the illusion you can teach a sociopath about empathy through music? Bummer for them all they did was teach him music theory and how to use it the way a sociopath will use any knowledge he can simply memorize.

    ReplyDelete
  87. Guess that means you also cover C.

    ReplyDelete
  88. Primo Uomo Assoluto28 November 2013 at 09:54

hahaha, at least you show some cleverness ;)

I never claimed to be all knowing, did I? I never claimed to be an expert either. But I do have a certain level of musical education. Of course, some other people have far greater experience and skill level than me.
However, you claimed I didn't know anything about music as if you are in a position to determine that. Now THAT is delusions of grandeur.

    ReplyDelete
  89. Generally delusional and problems with fairly short term memory as well. I fear you have more than one issue bud.:-(

  90. Exactly 'Sasuke'. Exactly...

The same notion applies to Female vocalists also. Personally speaking, I very much prefer the 'Gladys Knight's, Judy Garlands's & Regina Belles's' as opposed to the 'Mariah Carey's, Celine Dion's & Patti Labelle's'.

Listen to this Man's voice - undountedly, one of my all-time, favorite, vocal inspirations - he is a 'Lyric- Bass-Baritone'; the tonality of my voice, especially in its coloring, is quite similar to his however I have greater range.

  94. Primo Uomo Assoluto28 November 2013 at 17:10

She is not by nature a soprano, she is completely mezzo-soprano, even when little her voice liked sitting at a middle-low tessitura. A mezzo can sound sopranoish sometimes, especially when off her air in the falsetto, but the color of the voice is lyric mezzo.

    ReplyDelete
  95. Primo Uomo Assoluto28 November 2013 at 17:10

No, they have more agility though. And the top is less heavy.

    ReplyDelete
  96. Primo Uomo Assoluto28 November 2013 at 17:11

WHAT? LMAO she screams and strains on middle-low notes in that song, it's awful!

    ReplyDelete
  97. Primo Uomo Assoluto28 November 2013 at 17:12

Actually, it was her friend Justin Timberlake who called her that (as if he would know what a great singer sounds like). And then her team ran with it and started hyping her as that. That's the truth.

    ReplyDelete
  98. Primo Uomo Assoluto28 November 2013 at 17:13

I find it extremely offensive you would suggest that black singers are by essence bad technical singers. The very best - such as Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald - were extremely good and sophisticated.

    ReplyDelete
  99. Primo Uomo Assoluto28 November 2013 at 17:16

Actually, her cover of "Ain't no way" was several steps DOWN. Aretha sings Ab5 in mixed voice in the original key, while Christina struggled to hit a belted Eb5.
She is not soprano, if she were soprano she wouldn't have a huge hole in the Bb4 area, which is typical of technically bad mezzo sopranos.

    ReplyDelete
  100. Primo Uomo Assoluto28 November 2013 at 17:19

The truth is plain and simple. The woman had a good voice - not the best, but good - and ruined it with her awful musical intuition and completely lack of technique. She is by nature a lyric mezzo-soprano who, when off her air, can sound soprano-ish, but is certainly not a soprano. A soprano needs to be able to sing between Ab4-Ab5 with ease, over and over. Christina seems to be in trouble even when singing around C#5. Simply awful.
She is also far from a spinto or dramatic voice. Large voices bloom in beauty when "pushed", they don't become distorted and lose so much of their original vocal color.
This is basically a good throat played by a mediocre musician.

    ReplyDelete
  101. i didn't talk about any technique. It was my opinion. Philosophically i do have the right to find it wonderful!

    ReplyDelete
  102. I'm hearing a lot of Mariah influence, especially in the verses. It has a lot of similarities to her lyrical style too, I actually thought of Art of Letting Go in a lot of parts in this song. But that gif tho.

    ReplyDelete
  103. I always thought it was arguable if I'm going to be honest. Initially, I always thought Mezzo seeing as she could never ever truly sing in the Soprano Tessitura. Then, I began to waver taking into consideration her technique, which prevents her from doing SO MUCH. Not only that, she darkens her colour by lowering her larynx. Her timbre isn't truly dark, so I never ruled out the possibility of her being a Soprano. However, now? It goes without question she's a Mezzo. It sucks, though. She can hardly sing in the Mezzo Tessitura now. She had such a wonderful voice.

  104. Oh yeah, technically, yikes (vocally). But the arrangement itself? Brilliant. I appreciate the climax she incorporated into it. I was really disappointed because Beyonce is so much more capable of soaring on a song like this. But oh well.

When she was in her late teens and early 20's her voice was able to take more abuse, but truly a F#5 or even G5 is not very high for a real soprano, and there are mezzo-sopranos (both in pop and the classical world) who could go into the 6th octave from time to time.
It's more than just the fact she has such a hard time with the upper-middle, as there are mezzo sopranos such as Coral Segovia from Spain who can belt out B5 and go to D6 in a full quasi-operatic head voice, or like Anastacia who has a heavier and darker voice than Christina and can belt out Bb5.
It's really the whole thing taken into consideration, her natural tessitura (that was always middle-low, even when a young teen), the color of her voice when supporter, her vocal bridges, her vocal weight, etc. It all - to me - suggests a light-lyric mezzo soprano.

  107. I really think Ariana is vocally impressive, not a lot of modern Pop singers impress me vocally anymore, so well done Ariana, I will support this girls career.

    ReplyDelete
  108. Ella I agree, not so much Aretha...

    ReplyDelete
  109. she's not even in her mid thirties...

Beyonce's, Mariah, Aretha, Barbara singing voice and talking voice is very midrange. not high not low yet Mariah herself considered herself as a choral alto, While people categorize her soprano.

If you are judging this based on voice classification then christina would be lyric soprano since her talking voice is very light and very girly. Which is not the case because people always seem to never categorize her voice right.

She seems to purposely change her voice, because I thought the same way until i recently heard her sing and she sounds like she did when she first started, then I heard we remain then she sounded lower, then the AMA.

What you are hearing is technically not vocal decline but purposely bad technique to switch to certain genres of music that caused some voice changes. She even stated it took her years to develop a rasp on the voice, this to me screams artistic choice. While many technical singers or listeners don't agree, It is her voice. And this comment was a year ago and now she topped the charts with 2 singles with those rasp. So her career is not over.

    ReplyDelete
  110. The thing is she is actually naturally universally beautiful. She's not ugly, she just chooses to look well not so natural at times.

    ReplyDelete
  111. no it wasn't i wanted to do a cover of the cover for my students and my note meter indicated she was a few steps up. And I play the piano and the arrangements were done a few steps up from the original B♭.

I played the song with a soprano student of mine. Since the original arrangement made her sound foggy in the lower notes.

Xtina reached Eb6 and the arrangement was done to do so, counteracting Aretha's original. Her problem is she wants to belt the notes, if she sang it in mixed she would sound like she is struggling.

    ReplyDelete
  112. Judging based on bad technicalities and raps on vocal category is incorrect...

Many natural untrained sopranos don't know how to utilize their natural voices because they are influenced by other singer and try to imitate certain sounds. The only way to find out is to go trough vocal pedagogy to utilize the full voice. In pop you can't distinguish voice category based on the singers voice health, techniques and bad habits. So you judge it based on the over range despite those, because those notes could still be reached with proper vocal techniques at times.

Just because she reaches certain high notes with bad techniques does not discredit her voice category or natural range.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Judging her voice based on her commercial songs...

Many of her commercial songs don't show her full range, None of them do actually. Most of her songs are much more subdued and made for radio.

Again voice classification in pop voice does not determine their rasp, or bad techniques. The fact thats he can reach those notes still gives a possibility of her reaching it in proper technique if she goes trough it. It does not indicate her not being a soprano. Just means she in improperly trained.

    ReplyDelete
  114. If thats the case then why does her lower mezzo notes sound froggy, she seems to hit a wall below the 3, but she can reach higher than eb6 in full falsetto? And higher on whistle?

A spinto in operatic voice is a trained and studied voice, you can't really use that vocal classification on pop singer.

They are either contralto, mezzo or soprano in pop. Voice classification is inconclusive and very controversial in pop music and many voice pedagogy teachers will frown upon this method.

    ReplyDelete
  115. So how come you've used it to try and classify her? She's definitely not a spinto or the pop equivalent of one - Whitney is a good example of someone who was (in her prime). X is like a light lyric mezzo, hence the weak lower register but the lighter timbre that is similar to a soprano, but I don't think she can maintain singing in the soprano tessitura with ease and consistently - maybe if she learnt to mix properly and more often and used/developed her head voice more we'd be able to tell if she's more mezzo or soprano.

Also, some mezzos are able to reach the 6th octave in falsetto/head/whistle register - Beyonce can go into the 6th octave and Rachelle Ferrell is a mezzo (I think) and she can go into the 7th octave, proving range has little to do with one's voice type - it's more about how comfortable they are singing up there and how easily they do so. Christina rarely goes into the 6th octave in the first place and when she does she's not as comfortable nor does it with as much ease and consistency as true sopranos.

    ReplyDelete
  116. I never ever said she was I said she is PROBABLY a spinto. None of this voice classification is accurate. It's a blog where people can guess. I say she is soprano because despite her bad techniques she still reaches notes required for sopranos wether it's bad techniques or not.

But those women have a clear cut mezzo voice based on their lower registers.

Christina is known to have bad techniques on all her range. So I classify her as a soprano based on the notes she has sung in her previous years of live singing and her current.

It does not matter if she goes trough the 6th octave once or twice or 4 times, the fact is she can. A soprano in opera can choose not to touch over the 6th octaves if her artistry does not call for it. same as pop sopranos, of they feel they don't want to for some reason they don't have to.

There is no such thing as a proper way a soprano can or should reach notes in pop or non classical music, this is again is wrong.

A true non soprano does not reach certain notes even if she strains, straining is an indication of improper technique and can be resolved with proper skills, it does not mean anything!!!!!

Improper technique does not disqualify her natural range. Look at alicia keys she can't touch soprano notes even if she tried because she is not a soprano. And still strains on her mid range yet she is Mezzo soprano. She is not contralto as people believe because her range is discredited from improper technique. That is not he way to classify a voice.

There is no way Christina voice sounds close to natural mezzo (tough she tries by lowering her larynx) or contralto. She is an untrained, improper technical soprano.

For what it's worth, I do think that you're a good singer, and just because I don't necessarily feel the emotion in your voice that doesn't mean you lack emotion. I'm sure there are plenty of people that can connect with you. I felt like an asshole and a hypocrite after posting that because I just trashed a troll that was attacking DD personally. I honestly didn't mean it as a personal attack.

  120. You know, I was so ready to hate Miley because I think "We Can't Stop" is atrocious and sounds like a Rihanna reject, but after listening to "Rooting For My Baby" I had to recognize that she has the potential to release really good music. It figures that it would be Pharell that would bring the best out of her, you can really hear her country twang. GAH, why is she fighting her true calling?!?!? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  121. You have to free your voice more. You coordinate your sound more in the throat, which is why the sound on G#4 was tight, hoarse, and thin (throaty). The tonality changed a lot when you went to the upper register. You need to gain more Diaphragmatic support, so then the notes come out a lot stronger & less strained. Your tonal quality will sound a lot more natural. An exercise you should practice so you know you're using your Diaphragm is by breathing. What I'd do is when you breathe, place your hands on your stomach (while lying on your back) and breathing in and out. If your stomach is moving (up and down), that's good. It means you're using it. When most people sing, throaty singers, there isn't a lot of muscle contraction (not in the diaphragm anyway lol) & as a result, their support is sh*t so the notes come out thinner & strained with tension all over (Christina Aguilera's E5 in Candy Man). As you use the Diaphragm more, the sound is no longer placed in the throat (so more AIR flows through). And what do you have? An open throat & a free sound.

So mostly, it's the placement. Please, let your larynx stay as neutral as possible. Don't end up like Christina and Charice: Phenomenal voices, awful technique, over exerted larynx's. What's left? Practically nothing. And those two had GREAT voices.

    ReplyDelete
  122. I was WONDERING lol I'm like, he has a nice speaking voice, but where's the singing? lol

  132. I think its really important to consider the fact that Mariah has, not just vocal ability, but the musicality to take a song, even a simple melody, and turn into something more. Celine has a magnificent voice but it always seems like you're never going to get something (musically/creatively) new or different from Celine.

I really hate you lol You're picture-perfect and endowed the many awesome opportunities that come with Glamour. I'm willing to switch places when you are :D And I think you being the minority there is actually pretty cool. It makes you stand out more (which models should) and more unique by default. You'll steal all eyes, especially with your body haha. I'm not a model so my advice would at best be ineffective, but have fun & enjoy yourself...in PARIS. I'm drooling at the prospect of me roaming Paris. So, is everything going to be paid for? Hotel, plane ride?

Openly? Nice. So many people are denial of that & beat themselves up and end up hurting themselves in the long term by perpetuating the charade that they aren't either Bi or Gay. What's it like being 'Bi-sexual'? That's such a weird question (stupid too lol) but it fascinates me how one could do both.

  155. Oh...

I am, actually, quite stunned to know that there is somewhere on this site who has shared the same experiences as me.

Yes, 'Robin', I was sexually abused, on MULTIPLE occasions but, for some strange reason, I am able to talk about it openly today at 21 years old as opposed to when I was 14/15. It was one of the most horrifying experiences that ever took place in my life and to have experienced it at such a young was even more traumatizing (Having kept it a secret from my Family for so long and then finally twlling my parents etc.) - I have suffered from various mental illnesses in the past because of it - but it amazes me to know how far I've come and where I am today. I feel blessed overall. I know you said that you don't like talking about it but what age were you when you fell victim to it? Was it a family member or somebody close to you? Please, express your feelings & opinions on the topic. IF YOU CAN of course.

    ReplyDelete
  156. That's the thing with me. I never really had that extra support and I'm not the most vocal person so all of what I had to endure, I had to endure by myself with the help of no one. I fell victim when I was, 9, 13, and 14. Some days I can talk about it just fine, and other days the anger comes. Its not so much anger towards not having anyone there for me, its anger because of a deep complex emotion that I can't describe in one word. Its more so frustration with hypocrisy around me that leaves me a little bitter fruit.

Same here. The medical field ALWAYS intrigued me to no end. I find it exciting & inspirational when you're held accountable for someone else's well being. I guess it makes me feel special & valuable because I can tap into that part of me that has something valuable to give to people and the world in general. I've always enjoyed helping others, so any type of medical field works for me. As for the Surgery aspect? I LOVE it. I guess it's 'cause I'm a HANDS ON person, so that's cool. Forensic Science is awesome. My school has a program for that. I'd like to do it but I'm so scared. Everyone in the program is so serious, the school in general. Yes, it was child trafficking, I suppose. They took street kids and sold them to pedophiles, perhaps also harvested their organs once they were done with them.
It happened in Brazil, my family was visiting and my parents were going through an ugly divorce, and I ran away to get away from the screaming...I wish parents would get divorced sooner instead of staying together "for the kids", the kids don't need a mom and a dad together, what they need is peace and a stable environment. Anyway, I spent about a week in the street while my parents searched for me, and in that week I toughened up quite a bit. My personal philosophy is that the one who has the strongest will to live is the one who deserves to survive.

I am originally from Europe though :) born in Spain, but my dad is from South America and my mother from Corsica.
