Britney Spears' new musical era has begun with the pushed forward release of single, Work B*tch.
The song isn't what I was expecting from the Diva, and honestly I'm left a little cold with the dance direction they've decided to take. Damn you Will.i.am!! However, I've only given the EMD-influenced cut a couple of spins, so perhaps it'll grow on me once the disappointment that she hasn't ventured back into Blackout territory has subsided
Still, it's nice/brave to try new things, so some respect goes to Britney/her handlers for not retreading old ground. (You know things are bad when I'm serving up generic platitudes!) Maybe you guys can help me understand how I should be feeling about the song in the comments.
Thoughts?
Its a good workout song, gay clubs will play it and drag queens will WERQ to it but for me its just bleh, i mean the whole vocal coaching news made me think i was getting some new generation vocals which clearly aint present here. i sounds like a Christina Aguilera bionic filler track tbh.

Not sure how I feel about this! I love a bit of Brit but this is slightly different to what I was expecting. I do like the beat and bass and heaven forbid the monsters and katykats jump on me but this is better than either Applause or Roar. Just because its so far removed from the expectation that it does kind of shock!.....
ReplyDeleteI think it will take a few listens to fall in love with, just one in the club when drunk though! Then all the boys will see me twerk it up ;) :p
The kind of thing that gives me a headache before the end of the video. But definitely not what I expected of britney.
ReplyDeleteThen again...only thing I know of Britney is ''Baby one more time".
And I am mostly curious at that Miley Cyrus co-operation.
But if Britney is happy, healthy and back...I am pleased for her.
All jokes aside, it really isn't fun to see someone break down for real like she was. Don't wish that on anybody.
So...you Go Britney!
Terrible. That is all.
ReplyDeleteAt least shes not ripping off sara bareilles or self indulging on how great she is after 2 albums. someone tell me that applause or roar are better than this. Give me break! No other mainstream pop song sounds anything like this and you can bet this sound will be replicated for the next 6 months. and all this sh!t about a vocal coach seriously what were you expecting 15 years into her career she was going to turn out to have Celine Dions pipes. Be realistic it's Britney f*cking Spears. She could release white noise and it would sell! no other pop artist can come close to her mantel. Living pop legend, it's a cracking tune people had the same reaction or S & S look how that turned out. Britney knows her place its in the car, the club, the gym this song is pure fire in any of those places. Kudos to her or those around her who know how her name can sell their music product.
ReplyDelete1) It sounds like something a Real Housewife would release as a single.
ReplyDelete2) For a song so long, it's too repetitive (vocally as well as production wise) and should have more to offer.
3) With all that said it is not a terrible song and I think it's fine, not good great or amazing just fine.
I don't really think it's a meaningless message though. In fact I feel like this song's a really good motivator song without trying too hard to sound like it.
ReplyDeleteSo I wasn't really feeling this song as much as Hold It Against Me, or Gimme More or any other lead single, and my fear with her working with will.i.am is that her songs would sound more like will.i.am songs than Britney songs (Big Fat Bass, Scream & Shout). My first impression is that instead of making something classic or timeless, she went for the very current mainstream catering route, I thought it was a great song for radio/clubs, but not exactly for the longtime fans. But breaking it down more, this song is actually very much a risk, not a lot of other songs put out by a pop diva really sounds like this, or has this type of structure, and I was taken aback by the lack of singing vocal, but this is Britney Spears, if she wants to experiment and take risks, go for it. The good parts of the songs: It may be the #1 workout song of the year, I honestly think this song is so motivating, her British accent making her sound like a badass coach telling you to stop bitching and work, she sounds commanding and completely in control. And remember, Toxic wasn't the lead single of In The Zone either, I still have total faith in Britney and album #8.
ReplyDeleteI swear a dog could've written this song.
ReplyDeleteI don't know who Will.I.AM thinks he is imo his computer generated crap is overbearing like there is no musicality or anything to it. And how the hell does he get to be a judge on the voice!! He cant even sing.......Not feeling this song at all
ReplyDeleteSorry bro don't bring BIONIC into this
ReplyDeleteI feel that way too, but I was just taking shit above. If I was a 35 year old soccer mom with two kids and fifteen pounds of extra weight I needed to get rid of, this would my my gym jam! But since I'm not, I'll call it my gay serenade.
ReplyDeleteShouldn't it be called 'Work, Bitch'? Work Bitch without a comma is a negative sayin' someone is like a teacher pet or something along the lines.. Maybe I am the only one who realizes this. Are you mopping up the soup I'm spilling?
ReplyDeleteOk, you are the only one who thought on this so hard. LOL,
ReplyDeleteAt first I hated it but after a replay or 2 its too catchy to resist. Honestly, as a fan of Britney's I have never liked her lead singles. I am sure I will like the album though.
ReplyDeleteI find it refreshing to see someone in pop music saying that if you want something, you have to work, instead of "the universe owes you everything because you are a special little star" crap that some singers are putting out lately. So, I actually did find it kinda mature. Her voice is far less edited than usual, it has an interesting agressiveness to it and the beat is a killer. 2013 Britney is very promissing so far.
ReplyDeletei like that its telling people that if you want luxury, you have to work for it and that kind of message is not all that common in music now a days but the message derailed by lazy lyrics, an awful beat and britney's vocals are to popy
ReplyDeleteYeah, it could NEVER be a Bionic filler. Don't do Bionic, it was a great album. People just don't know how to be individuals. They take the popular opinion, and the charts as the worth of something, rather than allowing something to be what it truly is, and to them.
ReplyDeleteI am totally in love with the song, seriously. It's different from everything that's on the market. Sure it's not very "vocal" or melodic, but it's risky. Her voice sounds amazing, you know just the sound of her voice and her accent and pronounciation are enough to sell a record and it tells a lot about her a-list star status. Power belting and technical singing has never been Britney's strenght (after 1996 I mean) so I like that she isn't trying to go all vocal and actually fail. That being said I hope her vocal coaching helped her with her singing because she has one of the most interresting voice IMO and it would be amazing if she knew how to use it properly. I feel like the song is just like a time traveling machine to the future, it's powerful, slightly grimy, the vocals are envelopped in an alien atmosphere. I'm in love.
ReplyDeleteAlthough the lyrics are not fabulous, I really like the message of "if you want something stop crying and work for it", specially since Britney has really needed to work to get out of the crap she was into. The instrumental is not my style at all (although none of Britney's songs are, I don't really like electronics) so definetly I won't buy it, but then again I like the message.
ReplyDeleteBritney's vocals have always been pop-y , I agree about the lyrics, they feel a bit sloppy, but the beat is pretty solid in my opinion. I didn't find myself instantly attracted to this song, like I did with "Applause" and "Roar", but it's possible that this one is a grower...
ReplyDeleteThe thing that I have a lot of respect for Britney is her delivery, how she makes every song her own, and really puts some confidence and attitude into it. That said, I wish she would venture into some powerful singing, because she has so much potential...
ReplyDeleteI know! Imagine if she had both the inimitable vocal style and the strong vocals!
ReplyDeleteHahaha you're right.
ReplyDeleteThe nerve of Shitney to tell anyone to work, when that is the one thing she hasn't done in the past 6 years.
ReplyDeleteExcept coming out of rehab, recovering from the loss of a relative, going on two tours, announcing a Vegas residency show, releasing two #1 albums, three #1 singles (if you only count Billboard Top 100), four top 10 singles, win awards, release music videos, and become a judge on X Factor. But please, tell us how much you've accomplished recently.
ReplyDeleteHaha you got owned by MikeyPop
ReplyDeleteNot loving this at all, but I do think it is quite a great 'impact single' to get the ball rolling on the next Britney era. It obviously will generate conversation due to its bizarre sound and "PG-13" controversy, leading perfectly to the next, hopefully, significantly more melodic single.
ReplyDeleteFirst listen was with the song's demo. She kind of gave it a funny tone. Serious yet subtle approach. Then the official one released. It was better. Loved it.
ReplyDeleteSssh you........http://31.media.tumblr.com/0036ef02f1e02a824707d062bcc901df/tumblr_mg2p0mQRdL1ru1wbho1_r1_500.gif
ReplyDeleteI get what you're saying now, me so stupid. You are saying "work bitch" is kind of a label while "work, bitch," is more of a request.
ReplyDeleteLOL Mikey I think we can affirm you destroyed her :P.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, the only thing you listed that she's worked on is recovering from a mental illness. She may have all of those accolades, but it's only because of her name/legacy, not how hard she's worked during these past couple of years. She's gone on two tours where she's lip synced the entire time, didn't dance, and walked around the stage flipping her ratty weave around. I wouldn't boast about her world tours when they look like this: http://fc08.deviantart.net/fs71/f/2012/084/7/2/britfail_by_samfiss-d4tuzd6.gif. As for X Factor, she was the most boring judge on the show and basically got paid to sit in a chair. Also, you can tell by her dead pan, phoned in delivery on her songs that she's over her music career. Honestly, I can't believe her fans are satisfied with how little she seems to care about her music now. Do you really consider what she does now performing?
ReplyDeleteThat'd be awesome, tbh!
ReplyDeleteHonestly, a legacy can't win someone awards for more than a year, since there's usually a professional board choosing who is nominated and picking the winners, or fan voted (and Britney never had the ultra rabid fans like Bieber or Gaga). Her Circus Tour was almost completely lipped, I'll give you that, but the Femme Fatale Tour was about 60% live, obviously it's not great, but it's a good sign of progress, as for dancing, you can go find a shitty gif of anyone dancing and claim that to be the entire show, go watch an entire show from her and tell me if you have the stamina to complete an almost three hour concert after having two kids, recovering from rehab and a leg injury, and still look half as great. And to be honest, I never liked Britney on the X Factor, because she has always been an introvert, especially after 2007, I think people forget that she has psychological disorder but what I think is good is that she's trying to show progress, getting a vocal coach and fitness instructor to improve, working out more, writing songs on her new album, and I think we all forget that these people actually are human beings trying to keep their job (because really, this industry is about staying relevant whether you wanna hear that or not.)
ReplyDeleteNo, just no. Britney seems totally motivated by this album seeing her tweets and posts and the way she speaks about it. But of course you took the time to check all that before posting your hateful comment, right? You were probably also aware that Work Bitch is the first lead single she cowrote since Me against the music in 2003, right? And your opinion about her delivery in the song is merely that, an opinion. She never disapointed musically and that's why she's been consistently relevant since 1998. So you can take your haterate, pixellated face and unoriginal name calling elsewhere.
ReplyDeleteRight!
ReplyDeleteWhat's haterate?
ReplyDeleteThe delusion on this thread...
ReplyDeleteWell the announcement that she is in fact going to do more work. Although my main point really was the recovering from the breakdown and substance abuse and other issues.
ReplyDeleteRight? No more to say?
ReplyDeleteI have plenty more to say, but it would be pointless to continue this. This is reminding me of the beyonce threads.
ReplyDeleteWell I enjoy a good debate as long as we're rational.
ReplyDeleteTo me it seemed Mikey's point went to the "not doing" rather than quality of work or how satisfied fans were.
ReplyDeleteWhich also seemed to be the crux of your initial critique...not doing anything rather than quality.
Not sure "announcements" count as work but just overcoming a serious and obviously very real break down alone is plenty of "doing things" in my book.
ReplyDelete"bro" oh dear.
ReplyDeleteOh my god Make it stop. I'm not even listening to the entire song. NOPE.
ReplyDeleteThis is horrible crap with a meaningless message that I will happily download and dance like a mad little gay troll too.
