Miley Cyrus isn't doing anything to prove those who only recently became aware of her existence via the controversial things that she does, that she isn't anything but another plastic-pop star.
At the iHeartRadio Festival, the Diva had a perfect opportunity- with the live rendition of Wrecking Ball- to at least show detractors that there was a capable voice behind the gimmicks. Instead this happened [watch the video]. Wavering melody, pushed vocals- with a terrible attempt at improv at the song's closing- and a generally unpolished delivery ensued. We've heard that Cryus can sing, but performances like these aren't doing anything to enlighten those unaware of it.
Though I think the biggest problem highlighted by this, and the We Can't Stop performance, is the grating tone of her voice. It's something which isn't so apparent on the mastered versions, but becomes almost unbearable in this live set.
So was this a case of the emotion of her recent breakup getting to her, or is that just an excuse for a poor and lazy performer not putting in the effort?
Thoughts?
Yeah, dodge that F#5 Miley... Wrecking Ball was good until she started attacking the poor song at the end.
ReplyDeleteWe can't stop was awful. She sounded miserable here. Though you could argue that it made the wrecking ball performance better. Wrecking ball was listenable imo.
ReplyDeleteCouldn't disagree more but then..I saw this i-heart performance
ReplyDeletehttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOAF4wUzTVc
the problem is in her tone not so much her ability to sing - she is a capable singer and by some of the covers she's done in the past we know this - but i feel as the songs she chooses to release just amplify the voice of her tone
ReplyDeleteand hey atleast her singing voice isnt as annoying as her speaking voice
she might have been tired here too because she seemed out of breathe a few times
ReplyDeletewrecking ball was decent for the first half though
I have to agree I found her voice unbearably grating in this performance, from experience I can say it definitely sounds likes she's had one too many big nights. Not too mention too much smoke, tobacco and otherwise haha. That being said her stage presence and emotional connection still managed to keep me captivated.
ReplyDeleteomg. Shaky, no stability, pitchy, no intonation, rough and shouty in the higher parts, not to mention flat, no tonality.. and very nasal... they were simple Bb4's... but she was struggling to hit them lol then omg the D5's and upper fifth octave notes below D5 at the end made me stop the video, she was simply shouting... it was horrible >_< I'm not even a hater honestly but that was just awful.
ReplyDeleteTbh it wasn't that bad. Vocal was ok - but she clearly cared more about the overall performance than her voice anyways, so that's ok.
ReplyDeleteI also still hear people talking about the horrible 'We can't stop' performance at the VMA's, which is kinda funny. Also, since I don't think it's been pointed out on this website yet, do you realize she actually gave a great performance of that song at Jimmy Kennel?
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=14fsHu_BGP0
DD actually did post that video in the VMA performance thread I think. :-)
ReplyDeleteOkay, if that's the case, I'm sorry haha :D
ReplyDeleteWas this the same performance you posted in the other thread? Because that one sounded quite more stable than this one
ReplyDeleteLOL I am completely lost now as I posted several videos of Miley. From Wrecking ball most recently I posted the i-heart performance. But not the one DD posted. I posted one, I guess maybe from earlier in the day (seeing as it was bright sunshine).
ReplyDeleteIf you scroll down a bit to my comment, it's in there. :-)
She performed the song twice that day, so maybe the one DD posted above is the second one. I watched neither though, so I'm not sure.
ReplyDeleteShe is definitely a capable singer and I've heard her sing much better. I think it's a combination of a bunch of things here. She should probably quit smoking, it's going to damage her voice. Also, I think she should work with a vocal coach to get consistency.
ReplyDeleteYou said in your comment, "I guess that was earlier in the day?", so I answered your question. But thanks for being so nice :)
ReplyDeleteIt was more a rhetorical question and you didn't answer it. You agreed with what I guessed but without any further factual knowledge and in fact not even having seen either.
ReplyDeleteI think you must be missing the chat box. ;-)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-YICuUtkjlg&feature=c4-overview&list=UUdI8evszfZvyAl2UVCypkTA
ReplyDeleteI said that the performance DD posted (the one at night) was the second one, so, obviously, I mean that the one you posted was the earlier one, as Miley couldn't have performed the song another time this late. Plus I follow Miley's news (even if I haven't watched her recent performances) and the iHeart Radio festival news, in general, so I know what I'm talking about.
ReplyDeleteAnd no, I'm not missing the chat box cause I post there everyday :)
Yes Ahmed..I am aware daylight of the same day comes Before the evening.
ReplyDeleteI also realized this due to the fact that she actually says in the daylight video that it's the first time she will sing Wrecking Ball on stage.
Well, then you must simply be desperate for a conversation, any conversation, with me. ;-D
Well, good for you! You know that daylight of the same day comes before evening!!! Yet you still ask if the performance was earlier in the day. Whether you meant that as a rhetorical question or not, I did not think of that and answered the question without any desperate intentions in mind. Was just being helpful. Don't know why you're so pressed about it though.
ReplyDeleteI am pressed about stupidity and inanity. Sue me but I lack any and all patience right now for this. Your comment was both. It was also superfluous and completely pointless.
ReplyDeleteTrue, I've reached the same realization right now and it's that your replies reek of stupidity and downright pig-headedness. You are rude, overtly-defensive and have a prominent tendency to continue conversations that lead you absolutely no where. And, also, like you've already said, I have no patience for this right now too. Childish and inadequate replies, like "Well, then you must simply be desperate for a conversation, any conversation, with me. ;-D", don't move the conversation forward and are off-topic. Girl bye.
ReplyDeleteI don't know, found it boring on my part. I mean, I prefer it to the regular video, but I left after a little while. Ending made me laugh a bit though haha
ReplyDeleteShe has really bad control lol and put trying to do vocal runs, meslisma and vibrato in the equation and it doesn't sound good at all. She had emotion though, and I give her props for that. It felt a bit fake for me, or "overplayed" like she tried too hard to sound emotional, but emotional none the less. Other than that, learn to belt haha, she shouted those higher notes towards the end of the video.
ReplyDeleteoh miley
Point is..you did NOT have anything to say yet posted nothing anyway.
ReplyDeleteYes you are free to post pointless comments which say nothing and add nothing.
As I am free to point out ...you posted a pointless comment which said nothing and added nothing.
You are the one whining here because I did so.
The fact that you didn't watch either video, I pointed out to demonstrate just how pointless and meaningless your comment was.
Like I said, in the daylight video she states it's her first public performance of the song. Plus...it was daylight.
Both would to anybody viewing both videos have indicated that my question was a rhetorical one. And rhetorical, dictionary deprived Ahmed, means it requires no answer.
Still advising that dictionary for you. :-)
how not to love them? the singer has an amazing voice, they're really funny guys and unlike most artist nowadays, their lyrics actually mean something (like this one, talking about their friend's wife who commited suicide and what she would said to him if she had the chance)
ReplyDeleteAnd how not to love Anouk? She has an amazing voice,is an excellent vocalist,, great lyrics which are also about real things, she is also funny and, rare these days, has great honesty, real passion and always sings live and delivers 9 out of 10 times. :-)
ReplyDeleteI cannot watch those videos you mention due to a permanent audio problem on my laptop. That's why I never comment on the videos themselves. I had something to say about your comment though, so I said it.
ReplyDeleteThe rest of your comment is stuff you've already said before and I've already replied to, so I've got nothing else to say.
I posted a comment containing a clearly rhetorical question regarding two videos from the same day. The one I posted filmed clearly ( no working audio or even clicking on the link needed. It's right there in my comment) in broad daylight.
ReplyDeleteYou responded with repeating the information contained in my comment and added that you yourself actually saw neither video.
You basically said nothing and added nothing. I pointed that out and you are the one who has been whining ever since.
I did not know that your question was rhetorical. I've already said that. And no it's not clear for someone who has not clicked on the video that it's in daylight, I thought it was just a white background behind her. So when I saw you asking if the one you posted was earlier in the day, I commented saying that, yes, it was, because someone I know told me that she performed the song twice and the first performance was very good. So when I saw you posting that one and praising, I immediately knew that it was the first one and decided to comment to say that. I didn't realize it was a rhetorical question and wanted to clear any confusion.
ReplyDeleteSomehow you got overtly-defensive and started attacking me. I don't know what's wrong with you, but I'd like to end this conversation.
Yeah, you said before you were ending the conversation. And yet...you are still whining away.
ReplyDeleteI don't suffer inanity gladly. That's in my book not a problem with me but with the inane who insist on demonstrating said quality.
As you have done in your every reply.
This being again a nice example..."I don't know what is wrong with you?"
I told you three times what irritated me and still you are puzzled!?!
No problem. My bad. I do like the brazil performance though. :)
ReplyDeleteSo do I. But not in a "wow" way. It's just decent and it's Mariah so of course...what's not to like???
ReplyDeleteBut it sure doesn't impress me the way her old performances would or some other singers can do today.
Lissie really needs to get a profile soon!
ReplyDeleteBecause what irritated you doesn't make sense. And I truly want to end this conversation, but you keep on replying, ignoring points I make....
ReplyDeleteAnyway, I find no inanity in my comments and this has been going on for too long.
So my conclusion: I find no mistake in replying to your original comment, regardless of your opinion on that, and if my comment got you pressed, well, you can stay pressed.
Oh hon, you ARE amusing. You keep saying you want to end this conversation but you keep forgetting to add.."by having the last word". Because what other reason would you have for replying a day later in a conversation you already several times declared to want to end?
ReplyDeleteOf course the one who posts inanity fails to see it's inanity. I presume you DO have the sense to not post inanity when you are aware it is inanity. :-)
For the fourth and last time then...what irritates me is ..people who have so incredibly little to say that even with so many subjects up for grabs plus the possibility to bring forth their own subject ...all they can actually post is a reply in which they simply repeat what the original comment stated and add that they speak from less knowledge than the one posting the original comment.
iow..post a comment of pointless nothingness.
And you betcha I am gonna stay "pressed" at the sad state of such a being. I will foolishly and in spite of all evidence to the contrary... keep hoping for better.
Gurl I really want this convo to end, but you keep provoking me with stuff like this. You are insufferable. Unlike you, I don't want to have the last word, I want to settle/have tried to settle the argument. My wanting the last word is an assumption/expectation that you had in your mind and you're expecting me to fulfill that expectation, but that's not gonna happen honey. Delusional posts like that provoke me enough to reply to you so that the conversation would go on and we keep bickering.
ReplyDeleteAnd your condescending attitude gotta go, honey.
A sad truth. :(
ReplyDeleteWhy the hell would anyone lip an interview?
ReplyDeleteI REALLY liked the emotional delivery, and I get myself listening to it again and again because of that... But her singing was bad.
ReplyDeleteWho is her vocal coach? Melanie Daniels?
ReplyDeleteI love when she hits that high note in "Vision Of Love" it is so awesome.
ReplyDeleteWhich ones? I love the song. But I'd like to see the ones you're talking about.
ReplyDeleteI think it's the natural evolution of her voice. She didn't push her voice or try to immaculate something she wasn't i.e --the banshee. It matured over-time, with age and experience.
ReplyDeleteI think her "high larynx" in chime for change stemmed from fatigue and vocal exhaustion/illness from tour. She was literally fighting her way through it. Keeping her larynx neutral wasn't probably on top of her priority list..Probably tried to keep from cracking and being pitchy. The voice becomes unpredictable and "unstable" when you're under the weather lol
horrible voice ever ever
ReplyDeleteThat's just nonsense. No way can that be the most horrible voice you ever heard. Unless you were born deaf, just got the implants and your brain's still adjusting?
ReplyDeleteHeaven knows there's plenty to criticize re Beyonce. And I think I covered most of it LOL
But your statement goes beyond "tastes differs" into the realm of absolutely ridiculous statements on music, made by the tone deaf.
I thought she was an alto
ReplyDeleteVocally Beyonce and Cecilia Bartoli are interestingly similar. I often think of Beyonce and the contemporary manifestation of Cecilia Bartoli.
ReplyDeleteChristina Aguilera has many songs that go beyonce your typical pop song. I'm OK, Oh Mother, Hurt, Lift Me Up, You Lost Me, Walk Away... even well-known songs like Fighter and The Voice Within showcase really good songwriting skills and musicality. The problem with Xtina is that she tries so hard to be shocking and to show that she is different than the other girls, that at the end of the day she ends up being just the same. If she had released Fighter as Stripped's lead single or Birds of Prey as Bionic's lead single, maybe she'd have had more success in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteI think Beyonce's upper limit is closer to an E6, as she effortlessly sang the Eb6's in 1+1
ReplyDeleteYes, that's the kind of stuff you were writing about her dancing and I deemed worthy of a down vote.
ReplyDelete''She's a good dancer, she nails her choreo everytime''
First: managing to execute a simple choregraphy doesn't make one a ''good dancer'' in my book. ( being known to rehearse an awful lot doesn't do much to support that supposition either)
Second: unless you are privy to the actual planned choreography....you are not in the position to judge whether it was ''nailed every time''
I am perfectly calm btw. Just trying to get you to read instead of making silly assumptions or ask unnecessary questions.
I thought possibly putting it in capitals would draw enough attention for you to actually do so. Seeing as lower case doesn't seem to grasp your attention sufficiently.
If it did, you might have noticed the word impressive in my comment was not in between quotation marks.
Which means I wasn't suggesting that you had said it. It was my wording. My mistake for being so confusing to some.
I meant to imply that what Beyonce does, doesn't, in my opinion, rate calling her a dancer. As I see it, she is a singer who put a lot of effort into executing a choreography consisting mainly of walking around, shaking your ass, some arm movement and assuming two or three different poses.
Oh Miley, why must you abuse and sacrifice your vocal talent for the mediocrity that is your music/image (dress) and, overall, persona?
ReplyDeleteI know that this Girl has the ability to TRULY SING if she wanted to so what on, actual, earth is she doing?
I wouldn't even classify this performance as "Raw". There are numerous "Raw" (Rough, Gritty, Gravelly) singers out there who can still exude "Raw", live, vocal performances (Pink being the most famous contemporary one) whilst still being on key and in the right pitch.
Also, what the F*CK is she wearing? This whole 'artistic' phase of hers just seems like a poor/mediocre- modernized (new generational) version of Madonna's ICONIC 1991 - 1993 'Erotica' era. I wouldn't be surprised if she next came out with a 'Sex' book.
SHE NEEDS TO STOP.
I had something to say in the first place, you are the one who thinks it's pointless, so that's your problem. Don't whine about it to me.
ReplyDeleteAnd I honestly don't know who's upvoting my comments, but I'm sure they make sense to them. So if they don't make sense to you, once again it's your problem.
Anyway, I don't wanna discuss it anymore. You clearly have nothing more to add, repeating stuff you already said leading me to answer back with the same replies. It's a dead end argument.
And I really don't know what's wrong with my audio device, but I've seen a lot of HP devices having the same problem. I'm still working on it.
You had nothing to say in the first place. Perhaps next time simply not say it in that case? Or maybe do it in response to comments by who ever it is who is upvoting the nonsense replies you've been posting. It seems that person does enjoy inanity and meaningless nothing. Best of luck.
ReplyDeleteAnd dude...get that problem fixed already! You have been talking about it for months on end . Get a part time job and make some money if you can't afford it, would be my advice.
Please child, that reek is what's kept hanging from your responses.
ReplyDeleteYou are in the meantime the one who decided to reply to my comment, of all the comments you could reply to and of all the conversation starters you could have come up with yourself, with a comment consisting of repeating what I said and adding you haven't actually seen either video under discussion.
Of all the things you could have said anywhere on this blog...you picked a comment of mine posted two!!! days ago to respond to. With basically...absolute nothingness.
ROFL whatever kid
And please pick up a dictionary on your way out so that in future you understand the correct use and placement of "stupidity", "pig-headedness", "childish" and "inadequate".
And I mean a dictionary. Not a marketing guide which tells you to always deflect from what you do by accusing the other of it.
I replied to your comment because it was the one I had something to say about, regardless of whether you agree or not, and not watching the video is my choice, because I did not comment on the video itself, but on a point you mentioned in your comment. I'm free to reply to any comment I want to reply to so whining about it won't help your case.
ReplyDeleteOh I see you added that dictionary remark. This has been so done really. What kind of amateur, stale drag.
So keep on ranting if it makes you sleep at night anyway. :)
So then what is this comment about? You are repeating what I obviously stated already plus inform us you haven't bothered to hear either?
ReplyDeleteI fail to see the point.
Her voice sounds like it's damaged.
ReplyDeleteThe only things that entertains me about Beyonce' are her live performances, otherwise I would have, absolutely, no interest in her.
ReplyDeleteShe has the ability to become something GRAND but her lack of musicality constricts her.
Her album "4", with songs such as "Love On Top, I Care & 1+1" are the closest she has ever come to exuding any true musicianship within her entire discography and, although my liking of modern Contemporary- R&B/Urban music is quite scattered, I was highly impressed. But then there were songs such as "Run The World" and... -_______-
She has always reminded me of Christina Aguilera in terms of musical talent. They both have the potential to exceed beyond Contemporary- Popular music but I suppose fame and monetary aspects are far more important.
Oh well...
She sounded decent in the first bits of songs, I think she might have gotten really out of breath in the later half of songs because maybe she's tired and whatnot. I definitely think she might have been affected by her recent breakup in Wrecking Ball, in the bridge she legitimately seemed distraught and upset, or maybe she really is that great of an actress. Who knows.
ReplyDeleteIf I were a boy is also a good one that shows some artistry in the studio.
ReplyDeleteI like the song... But I wanna hear someone cover it to be honest...
ReplyDelete
