Jessie J loves a cover! So much so, that in her set for Rock In Rio 2013, the Diva shoehorned in a whole medley dedicated to other artist's material. Lucky enough to get a look in were: Fatback Band's I Found Lovin', Chaka Khan's Ain't Nobody, Mariah Carey's Emotions and Luther Vandross' Never Too Much. Of course I was most excited about one of these songs more than the others...take a wild guess which!
If I had been in the crowd, my brain would have literally exploded the second I heard the MTV-Unplugged introduction to Mariah's classic 90's hit. But being a vocal virtuoso, was Jessie able to hit the astronomic whistle notes that the song is so famous for? Well watch and find out for yoursel! (The medley start at 16:20 )
Thanks to Luiz for the heads up on this. Oh, and feel free to watch the whole set.. ;)
Thoughts?
Sadly, the more I see and hear of Jessie J....the less impressed I become. And I also (Luiz will be pleased to hear I bet) prefer even Mariah today or Mariah lipping Emotions than this.
ReplyDeleteFor anybody doubting whether they want to listen for it...NO she did not hit that high note.
I was surprised to see that someone was covering a difficult song like Emotions. However, after hearing her sing it disappointed me. It wasn't anything special IMO. Maybe it's because I expected too much. Props to her strong belting though.
ReplyDeleteAfter just watching Miley singing wrecking ball at i-heart...I think, for me, what Jessie lacks, in spite of all the enthusiasm she puts in is actual emotion.
ReplyDeleteHer damn neck should be hurting after she belted that damn A5 with all that vocal tension.
ReplyDeleteI also Prefer current Mariah :P. But It's because I'm a little white fluffy lamb. Like darling Luiz.
ReplyDeleteWhere as I am more a dangerous Bunny like in Buffy
ReplyDeleteWhy didn't she choose an easier song? "Fantasy" maybe. hehehehe Mariah's songs are so hard to sing.
ReplyDeleteBut it's ok. She didn't sound like this:

What in the world?! o_O was she on drugs or something?
ReplyDeletehahahahaha
ReplyDeleteShe's nuts. She's "famous" on youtube.
Honey pie, i love U. You're my baby.
ReplyDeleteI don't think she lacks emotion, I've just started to watch and Nobody's perfect has already given me some chills. I'll see the rest.
ReplyDeleteANYA!!! YES my favorite Buffy Character
ReplyDeleteI found it really annoying tbh.
ReplyDeleteYeah like that is what I implied.
ReplyDeleteAnd those who CAN read...would have understood that those two simply look like Bieber.
Which isn't "tomboyish". No tomboy would spent that much time on her hair.
It's stylized androgyny. Not "tomboy".
Well I was of course speaking just how I experience her vocals and the only emotion I have heard from her is enthusiasm for fun.
ReplyDeleteshe does too many covers..........
ReplyDeletegreat vocalist but dont cover mariah especially a song like emotions
ANYA was hilarious. Now Dawn, I could have done without her...
ReplyDeleteOh you're not going to like the next posttttttttttttt!....lol
ReplyDeleteI indeed absolutely did not. But then..you were reviewing another performance and also a tad on the bandwagon I'd say.
ReplyDeletePlus Miley anyway seems not your cup of tea if you don't like her tone.
And we'll linger on
ReplyDeleteTime can't erase a feeling this strong
No way you're never gonna shake me
Ooh darlin' cause you'll always be my baby
Yes!! She was always so whiny and needy
ReplyDeleteOh gosh! She's just awful.
ReplyDeleteoh, yeah! Our song, honey!
ReplyDeleteShe is not a tomboy she is a lesbian... Many lesbians prefer to dress more androgynous...
ReplyDeleteI am a lesbian. That's called butch, the look Charice is going for.

ReplyDeleteBig White Room - Jessie J: Vocal showcase (E3-G#5) live
And the award for the biggest cliché of the day goes to...
ReplyDeleteAwww video isn't available where I am : /
ReplyDeleteI didn't like her cover. She strained a lot at the beggining and even her background singers had problems belting the high parts. She is not able to sing in whistle register as I expected. I think she is a good singer but she shouldn't aim for something as difficult as Mariah Carey song. Unless you're Mariah or an extremely talented vocalist with a wide range you're doomed to sound bad.
ReplyDeleteThere are singers like Ariana Grande who can cover this song much better than Jessie J. Watch it on youtube. It is on her channel
ReplyDeleteAriana may be able to hit all the notes, but that's it - there's nothing special about her voice and there's little individual character or any colour or weight to it, in my opinion.
ReplyDeleteLOL, I've sung some Mariah songs, and though I got the range, I decided to never again because I can't sing it nearly as well as she does. Some songs benefit from a re-interpretation, but Mariah's versions are for the most part definitive.
