[Listen] Charice Pempengco Covers Katy Perry's "The One That Got Away" and Sia's "Titanium" On "Chapter 10"



Did anyone else know that Charice Pempengco had released an album of cover tracks? Chapter 10 contains some of the Diva's favourite songs, re-imagined by herself and includes golden-oldies like Toni Braxton's How Could An Angel Break My Heart and Bryan Adams' (Everything I Do) I Do it For You.

Apparently the album is for the Philippine market, with her next international set of original material to be recorded some time soon. But one has to ask why this wasn't released further afield, it's just the kind of music her Glee fans would eat up. [Scratch that, just found it on Itunes....whoops.]

Some of the arrangements on Chapter 10 are a little too "Karaoke" in their production for me- think synthetic strings and drum machines- but there are gems to be found, especially when it's just Charice and a piano. My particular favourites are her take on Katy Perry's The One That Got Away and David Guetta and Sia's Titanium- which I've rather helpfully tacked on to the post!

    I am really not feeling that Katy cover, her whimpering delivery does absolutely nothing for me, I prefer when she sings in a more bombastic style. The other cover is not bad but nothing that I will hurriedly be getting my quill out to write to mother... I always did love this song of hers though :)

    Her voice is way more versatile than I thought. Had a misconception it was only about the belt. That Katy Perry rendition I'm imagining playing over the end of a Final Fantasy game. sigh.     I agree that the delivery of the songs wasn't as great as her usual belts, but I like that she's showing a different side of her voice and taking different routes than expected. I wasn't digging the background male vocals or the drums. I think it would've sounded hauntingly beautiful with just a tinkling piano and maybe subtle female background vocals (ex: Lana's demo for Without You). I think the album is really marketed towards her Filipino and general Asian market though, as they love American songs and covers, so who better to interpret them than the Filipina-American crossover pop queen herself.

    As for her hair, she said (before she came out) "I know some people think that this is very rebellious but it's not. It's just me evolving." I think it was just her way of trying to cut out the negativity surrounding her sexuality to feel more like herself, like a transition. But I definitely feel like it looked better after she started styling it more.

    So sad to see this. A Really nice cover, but you could tell she wanted to do more with it. She could hardly incorporate the creativity and extra vocals she truly wished to due to the amount of damaged that was inflicted from the constant abuse. She was limited to the middle chest notes only. Still, a nice cover. A truly phenomenal voice that lost its way. Hopefully she'll regain the voice she once had because she truly had one of the best voices I've ever heard. For Christ's sake, she's a lot better than Katy, Sia, and Ariana but people aren't able to see that due to the decline she's gone through. She can regain that voice back if she practices healthier singing. There's no reason for an actually great voice like that to be out-classed by feeble, bland, remedial voices like Ariana's & Katy's. Get it together Charice!
