Gaga is back, so guess what, so is the controversy. After calling for love and peace between all stanbases of the world [exhibit A], the singer-songwriter decided to follow that sentiment with a shot from her avant-garde crossbow at ex-bestie Perez Hilton, and one-time idol Madonna. So much for creating harmony amongst fans! [Exhibit B]

Well, as Madonna was too busy not giving a crap celebrating her 55th birthday, it was left to Perez Hilton to bite back. And boy did he go in on Gaga- but surprisingly only after she further accused the blogger of being a stalker for daring to view an apartment in her block!! [Exhibit C]

Being accused of a criminal offence was clearly a step too far, and Perez took to his blog to clarify the situation:
I have long had plans to return to New York City more permanently. New York was my home for 6 years in the mid 90s, before I moved to Los Angeles. I also lived here for 3 months last year while doing an off Broadway show. I’m a new father and I am primarily focused on my family and where we will be most happy. I love New York and that is where me and my growing family want to call home right now. Sunday, my realtor showed us a list of possible apartments to rent. I learned only after the fact that Lady GaGa lives in one of the buildings we looked at, and she was across the country in Los Angeles when I viewed that building.Source: perezhilton.com
After a day of innocent house-hunting, I am devastated and my heart hurts that my former very good friend, a person I used to call my “wifey” and traveled the world with, is making very public and very untrue allegations about me on Twitter. While it is still too painful for me to go into detail about why I chose to no longer make her a part of my life, I will say that I am a critic and not a “stalker”. Any allegation that I am stalking her, based on a day of house hunting with my baby boy and my mother, is utterly false, defamatory and now appears to be putting me and my family in danger. I will continue to be a critic – in a way that is not mean or involves name-calling, and I will continue to have an opinion and talk about music and songs, like GaGa’s “Applause”.
I hope her fans stop sending me death threats, as the suggestion that I pose a danger to Lady GaGa is preposterous. If her fans want to send a message of support to Lady GaGa, they should buy her music. Notwithstanding my feelings about our personal relationship, I do wish Lady GaGa happiness and continued success and I assure you my family house hunting has nothing to do with her.
It was a strangely classy response from the often bitchy critic- he's supposedly "reformed" now since his child was born. Anywho, I'm assuming Gaga didn't like how she was coming off in this exchange of words so decided to tweet some more [Exhibit D]. Always a good idea....

If Gaga had any sense she would have quit at this point, but she couldn't resist having one last dig. Unfortunately for her it led to Perez saying, very publicly, what we were all pretty much thinking: this was all being done for publicity and new single Applause.Ouch.
So was this tête à tête an elaborate publicity campaign dreamt up by the pair to pull focus onto themselves? I don't think so. A few years back I would have believed that, but Gaga's use of Madonna in the instigating tweet was totally unnecessary for a planned attack; not to mention it risked another battle with Mumm-Ra herself. The whole thing reads more like a Diva frustrated with her plans being changed by a leak and the subsequent lukewarm reaction her comeback single got from consumers- especially when compared to Katy Perry's Roar.
I think Gaga was banking on the sympathy generated from the implication that she had been bullied translating into sales. Instead the spat probably had the opposite effect, turning more people off of her. It's a shame really, because this ARTPOP era began on a positive note. At least she eventually had the decency to get her Monsters under heel after being made aware of the nasty things they were sending Perez- he smartly retweeted those messages to her! This was the
I know how angry you feel sometimes, and I know that when they say things about me you feel that they are saying them about you as well. But music is about love, and is about sharing in the magic of theatre. you are allowing it to spread.
I ask you to take a pledge with me to continue the change toward
positivity, and to recognize that this behavior is wrong. We are stronger than this. We know what we stand for, and what we stand for is bravery. I know this because what I see on the internet is not what
I see at my shows. People deal with their insecurities in many
different ways. The anonymous nature of social media has made it easy for many to vent their anger by bullying others with no recourse or
accountability. But this is not a healthy way to handle your emotions.
Too little to late? I think maybe. But what about you guys? What are your thoughts on this? Do you believe Gaga isn't as nice as her public image suggests, or do you think Perez was talking grade-A bull?
