[Free For All]

Sorry about the lack of posts, I've just been really busy of late! However, this type of post, the "Free For All", will (hopefully) become a regular addition to the site. Its purpose? To give you guys a space to talk about whatever you want, really.

A few rules though:
  • Try not to get perverted-this site still needs to basically be "safe for work".
  • If somebody starts a controversial subject, try keeping it civil when dealing with it. If things get out of hand please flag the conversation.
  • It would be nice if it stuck to music, but it's not a requirement!

Erm, I'm not sure what else to add. The list of rules will probably grow as (and if) this post gets a positive response.

Sara Bareilles' album dropped today. Nice little album. I recommend Hercules and Eden.

  4. I watched Stoker (a really good film ) with an amazing soundtrack. Featuring
two songs by very talent Emily Wells and I think she is relative
    unknown.

  11. Did anyone see that one-minute preview of Demi's latest single "Heart by Heart." What did you guys think? I personally think this is a step up from her usual teen-pop music and pure pop music.

Am to the only one who thought her was pure genius ????!!!!!????!!!??? Elise Testone anyone ? Please ?! Comment below & leave a brief description of any of the following listed above ....

  15. Nancy Wilson is an amazing jazz singer

    ReplyDelete
  16. I like Russia....it is the motherland for Mastadons.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Don't watch these talent shows at all. It even took me 12 years to discover Kelly Clarkson. Glad I finally caught up to that one but...not enough to start watching said shows. Most of the more recent " talents" I have seen were disappointing to say the least.

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think she is over rated.

    ReplyDelete
  19. LOL Heavy!

I think Russia is a rather unsophisticated society, very harsh and because of that some amazing and very impressive historical moments. Of course 1917 but also the siege of Stalingrad during WWII!

    Amazing strength and perseverance.
And the US is damn lucky it never came to actual blows during the cold war because they would probably have gotten their asses kicked severely.

Your question also reminds me...have you ever seen a show called The Americans? You should check that one out Serendipity! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  20. I don't think that would work at all.

    ReplyDelete
  21. Because the less of those two, the better. I think they instead should retire and move to a nice private island. And invite gaga for a nice looooong stay. ;-D

    ReplyDelete
  22. Sorry, had to vote that down. Regular potatoes FTW ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  23. Kinda liked that one. Wouldn't listen to a whole album but this song was okay.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Lol, they are OK but I prefer sweet potatoes.

    ReplyDelete
  25. In my opinion posts on artists who have a profile should be posted there rather than here.
I think it would be nicer if this thread was more dedicated to lesser known people one thinks deserve a little spotlight. Or great names from the past as some here seem to have not even really listened to the likes of Sinatra and such.

And in light of that view...here's a little Dean Martin...

  26. Aline! Good to see you show up! Still listening a lot to that Sinatra/Fitzgerald video. What a great find that one is!

I am enjoying this Emily Wells as well.
    Thanks for posting! :-)

    ReplyDelete
  27. Well I PREFER chocolate. But amongst potatoes I'm going for the regular ones, fried and with mayonnaise and plenty of salt.

    ReplyDelete
  28. About that chocolate, that is one thing we have in common. I will kill, stab and die over some chocolate. And French fries are nice or wedges. I prefer hot Chinese mustard.

I also have a love for hot and spicy food. Lol

    ReplyDelete
  29. I like this, it's very sonic! And the U.S weather isn't much better... way too humid. I'm actually going to the U.K this fall, what should I expect? :p

    ReplyDelete
  30. I really enjoy this Dean Martin fella! (especially his humor :D) Any recommendations similar to those songs?

    ReplyDelete
  31. Any r&b junkies like me, would LOVE this. Not only is it a fun listen, but it really demonstrates R. Kelly's creativity. WARNING: Once you watch the first video, you will be possessed to watch the next 21.

Also, there's no such thing as too much Patti. :3 (unless you're wearing head phones, in which case it could cause serious damage to your ears... if sustained for a long time.) Anyways, I like her cover of "Ain't No Way" more than Aretha's.

  34. Can we just have a sincere discussion on here about the wonders of Fried Chicken? XD Just Kidding. How about how importance taking care of ones self is to the voice? Like the foods we eat and the drinks we drink. I find that on a day where I eat fairly healthy and drink lots of water with honey, I sound wayyyyy better than I do on a day full of sweet drinks and fast foods.

    ReplyDelete
  35. LOL One of these days you're gonna have to cook for me. I am starting to develop a lot of faith in your food skills.

    ReplyDelete
  36. LOL Well, don't discuss that importance under the Dean Martin/art Pack videos. All those cats smoked and drank...on stage. All btw having very long vocal careers.
I think a better tip towards maintaining one's voice would be to not belt and whistle your throat into oblivion within twenty years or less.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Define at what point in history ;-)

    ReplyDelete
  38. =D I'm glad you enjoyed!! I'm showing Emily's songs to everyone. She needs to be more known.

I love Ella Fitzgerald! I have all Cole Porter songs she recorded.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyyRi3l7E_k - Here's another duet Sinatra/Fitzgerald

    ReplyDelete
  39. Some of those names sound familiar. I'll take a look at them!

    ReplyDelete
  40. I dont think beltings the issue lol. Barbras been doing it for decades and she still sounds amazing. :)

    ReplyDelete
  41. I have two albums of Ella with Louis but tbh I find I don't really listen to them.
Ella was truly awesome but I find she is not really getting to me on a deeper emotional level and I tend to listen more to those who do.

btw are you on facebook? There's a group there you might enjoy.

    ReplyDelete
  42. They should sound familiar, you probably heard their names and their music in movies and such. Probably a lot of their music will sound somewhat familiar as well. :-)

    ReplyDelete

    ReplyDelete
  44. hmm autumn (fall) is when the weather turns cold, bring waterproof clothes and jumpers as it could be raining. we dont get snow till april and summer ends in late august :).

    ReplyDelete
  45. Barbra belted naturally to her and without straining her voice and when it fitted the song. It wasn't a " competition" to her.

I am talking about singers who belt for belting sake and who strain as if it is a competition. If not with other divas, with themselves.
All in order to satisfy their fans. An audience who cares more about being able to brag their favorite reached a certain note then about the over all performance.
You know, the kind of fans like Mariah has a lot of. Who complain about her " whispering too much these days" .

I really belief a lot of what you say singers should pay attention to is probably true for Classical music singers but in pop music...I think that belting fashion is and has been way more damaging to voices. :-)

    ReplyDelete

Would love to hear any opinions on this performance by Jessica Sanchez.

Also is anyone else really interested to hear Janelle Monae's new album? The two latest singles really have me excited

    ReplyDelete
  47. Get the girl a sandwich, somebody please. Right QUICK!

Also think her voice has an unpleasant quality to it and the phrasing etc is rather bland and uninteresting.

    ReplyDelete
  48. I usually agree with you Opie but that comment was gratuitous. That girl is thin and flawless. She doesn't "need a sandwich" like you say so condescendantly.

    ReplyDelete
  49. They have completely different ways of making music, it's like trying to mix oil and water.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Avoid polyunsaturated fats, fructose and processed food, eat real food, drink ONLY when thirsty, sleep a lot and everything should be fine.

    ReplyDelete
  51. UGH I log in but My comments keep going in as guest -_____-

But for some reason I really fell in love with her since her idol days. I'm still waiting for her to impress me (because she was honestly the best on idol IMO) however her latest album was TERRIBLE was really expecting more

    ReplyDelete
  52. Well there is a misconception that pop singers sing with a trained pop technique when not all of them do. If you are belting with proper technique (such as Barbra or Mariah or Whitney etc.) the voice usually USUALLY stays very healthy and undamaged throughout their careers. Belting is actually not that much more forceful than...ummm.... regular" singing. Its just that when people like Selena Gomez or Christina aguilera dont know what their doing and literally yell and scream that damage begins to surface. Also every voice is different and some singers can belt forever whilst others can do whistles freely and naturally and easily for years. It all just comes down to how prepared some of these "Singers" are and if they even know what theyre doing.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Belting is healthy as long as it's done with good technique, without too much weight on the voice. It's ok to make the sound weightier from time to time but it shouldn't be too much. the most important is rest and avoiding abuse.

    ReplyDelete
  54. My favorite thing about her is the way she was really good at scat singing.

I am on facebook =D. Just search for Aline Rosati Brunes.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Russian contralto, thrilling performance, feel free to watch :) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRtOuEeeRrA&

    ReplyDelete
  56. Yes I agree with you but those ladies I mentioned above seems to really have changed my opinion about your latter comment bc I was the same way ..... Judith hill being a background singer for Michael Jackson & Sasha Allen being a background singer for Christina Aguilera are exceptional talents ..... Also another singers who is amazing Amanda Brown who was also a background singer for Alicia Keys .... Performances to look at Judith Hill Feeling Good or What A Girl Wants .... Sasha Allen Next To Me or Oh Darling ..... Amanda Brown Someone Like You , Dream On, Here I Go Again , & Stars

Jacob Lusk, Joshua Ledet, David Archuleta, David Cook, Chris Brown, Kierra Sheard, Dorinda Clark-cole, & Lashun Pace !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Please .... 63. My mom is gonna buy me some salmon steaks and assorted leafy vegied and I'm gonna make this tomato sauce to top the salmon steaks one day next week but if we can't afford the salmon steaks I told her to buy chicken breasts. You are welcome to fly across the Atlantic to try a dish. Lol

    ReplyDelete
  64. If Jessica came to stay with me she'd be thick and juicy and ready for life.

    ReplyDelete
  65. Its been a long time since I just went and slaughtered some fried chicken...poor bird. Doesn't deserve me confusing its tender stringy flesh with bone...

    ReplyDelete
  66. LMAO..... Beat me to the punch.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Are you kidding me? That " flawless" alone makes my point. ;-)
Nobody is flawless Mark. And that girl is ridiculously skinny as is evident in size of her head v her body.

In this day and age..that is never gratuitous to point out such " fashionable" skinniness.

And so happens, that was genuinely my first thought at seeing her. It is also my thought after viewing other pictures of her.
She looks unhealthily skinny to me.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Doctors warn if you wait with drinking until you feel thirsty , you actually waited too long already.

    ReplyDelete
  69. Except it didn't for Whitney nor Mariah.

    ReplyDelete
  70. Sorry but that is way too long a list of names for me to hunt down.
You should add some links to the video you feel best shows off the ability of each singer.
I think you'd stand a better change of people actually checking them out than a vague chase of a list of names.

    ReplyDelete
  71. See, I thought that was you. Sent you a message a few days ago.

    ReplyDelete
  72. LOL I fear I might not get a visa. Hahaha

    ReplyDelete
  73. xD My name is quite ordinary here in Brazil but I think I'm the only Aline who likes DD <3

    ReplyDelete
  74. That is false. that's mainstream propaganda. If you drink when not thirsty you run the risk of entering a mild hyponatremia state, that is when the electrolytes of your cells are dissolved, you pee a lot and flush salts. That's not good. We are supposed to listen to our internal signals.

    ReplyDelete
  75. It's impossible to know if someone is healthy or no just like that. Everybody has a different body constitution. Some people are skinny, some are bigger. You have to be in their kitchen to see if they starve themselves or not. For instance I don't go and call fat people derogatory terms and say that they should stop eating (which would be rude and stupid).

    ReplyDelete
  76. Well, that's what doctors always say. If you don't mind, I am going with doctors over DD posters.
I'm sure you can see the logic in that approach? :-)

Anyway, both views are up, folks can decide for themselves.

    ReplyDelete
  77. I don't know many Brazilians, other than Donnie and The Annoying One on this blog.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Ha!!!! True .... Lol ....

    ReplyDelete
  79. Okay personally, I know this is kinda going against the opinions of everyone on the internet, but I did not really care for Michelle Chamuel at all, to me her voice wasn't anything unique, and I felt like she lacked a lot of technique, agility, and control that a lot of the other contestants had, and I don't know how the hell she won second place in The Voice over talents like Judith and Sasha. Personally, I think Danielle is decent for a young country artist, but I think she didn't really stand a chance against a huge majority of all the female contestants on the show, she's talented for her age but she has a lot of growing to do.

As for American Idol, I didn't pay as much attention to it as I did The Voice or X Factor, but I felt like the show itself has gotten very boring and dry to watch, the contestants have been decent, but I haven't seen any shining stars among the crowd, it just felt very lackluster compared to how fresh it was when Kelly first won.

    ReplyDelete
  80. It might be rude but in the case of obesity, it WOULD be good advice.
This girl to me doesn't look just constitutionally skinny, like I said, she looks " unhealthily" skinny. I am going in that by proportions and how much bone structure one sees in the face combined with her age.

Anyway, I didn't go up to Jessica and say that, I didn't go up on her twitter or facebook and say that.
Give me a little more credit than that Mark.;-)
I said it on a blog she is extremely unlikely to read.
I WOULD still , if I knew her try, to get some food into the girl, but in a more subtle way than just saying " eat!!!"
I am familiar with folks with eating disorders and know just saying stuff like that would have no effect.

I have met many people so far in my life and 9 out of 10 times when someone was as skinny as Jessica looks, it is either an eating disorder or some kind of substance addiction. She doesn't look like any kind of addict to me so I am going with...this girl, with obvious showbiz (rather than musical ) ambition, is imo probably starving herself.

As a feminist...I feel keeping quiet about such matters in general, gives off the wrong signal to girls generally. And girls generally ARE reading this and blogs like these. I feel they should not be told extreme skinniness is natural. It simply usually is not.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Well now, can't very well let the opportunity go by without a little plug for Anouk.

There are so many fine performances...it's hard to pick one.
Decided to go with the one I am most in the mood to hear again right this minute...

    ReplyDelete
  83. HAHAHAHA Trapped in the Closet is a joke!

    ReplyDelete
  84. Drink only when thirsty? Nah. If you wait too long you could be dehydrated. People should also drink water when they feel "hungry" cause that could be an indicator of thirst as well. If people don't drink enough water, they'll be tempted to over eat.

    ReplyDelete
  85. LOL I meant baked actually...my bad. I prefer oven baked in fact and mayonnaise has loads of eggs ..them is healthy!
The body needs salt to function properly. That's why Gandhi used it to make a point.

Also as the old Greeks already said...everything with measure! ;-D

    ReplyDelete
  86. Did you really just try to imply that mayonnaise if healthy?? Or were you joking?

And yes, salt to a degree but too much can cause water retention.

    Totally agree, moderation is key.

    ReplyDelete
  87. LOL kinda joking but matter of fact...mayonnaise being mostly egg yolk and oil, it's not unhealthy. The unhealthy factor lies in quantity one eats, not the mayonnaise itself.

    ReplyDelete
  88. My point was that a lot of belters are guilty of abusing their voice and that more singers ruined their voices like that than through eating sugars and the wrong kind of fats.

    ReplyDelete
  89. i agree she looks very skinny
but even on idol she was really really skinny
so we can't know if that's just her normal body type or if shes purposely not eating for the sake of stardom

as for her take on clarity - i feel her voice is more suited for R&B kind of songs and i cant say it was horrible because it wasnt it just wasnt a good fit for her voice

    ReplyDelete
  90. idk ive always been told by my doctors to drink tons of water

drink before you eat to help digestion, before you sleep, and when you wake up

but theres so many things out there said by many people so its hard to keep up

    - i say just do what you feel is best and and drink when you feel the need to

    ReplyDelete
  91. kelly is the most successful

and is the true american idol

no one on the show has reached her kind of success

shes had a long career and i still remember being younger and watching her sing a moment like this for the last time when she beat justin

but atm i just think there are too many singing competitions and they should really tone it down a bit because were just on overload

    ReplyDelete
  92. yeah i hate bow down.....
but i mean its beyonce so even though i dislike the song, i still think she performed it well
same thing with run the world - that was a horrible song but she killed it when she performed it at the billboard awards

    ReplyDelete
  93. What about Adele and Lana :) Both great songwriters with low voices

    ReplyDelete
  94. What about a duet between Adele and Lana :) Both great songwriters with access to low notes. Both like instruments and piano on their songs. Both writing about love. And with Adele's belting and Lana's sweet upper register it would surely be and interesting mix

    ReplyDelete
  95. Actually Whitney's belting technique wasn't always perfect, especially the higher she went and more often she did it. Her raised or tense larynx was one reason why her voice declined so quickly, on top of getting very little rest (and of course, all the rest).

    ReplyDelete
  96. R Kelly is a great talent. People see him as just another R&B/hip-hop artist like the basic Chris Brown, etc. but his songwriting is really good (more when he writes for other people) and he has a great voice.

    ReplyDelete
  97. 12 years?! :O

    ReplyDelete
  98. Lol, I know. It doesn't change the fact that I completely love it though! It's hilarious!

    ReplyDelete
  99. I completely agree. He has been such an innovator in the R&B genre. But he's so overlooked by today's generation, for the reason you stated... people like Fistopher Brown make all male R&B singers looks bad.

    ReplyDelete
  100. She is amazing and it is such a shame that almost nobody knows about her. She has plenty of good pop songs like Heaven or If I Was God, Broke...just do not compare her to Gaga !

    ReplyDelete
  101. what artist's new music are you most excited to hear guys ?. i looking forward to gaga, porcelain black ,lana releasing some new things :).

    ReplyDelete
  102. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6EPwRdVg5Ug

I love this and especially her voice. :D

    ReplyDelete
  103. That could be interesting....but they have a lot differences in the way they compose, I see lana more like a rapper?? She plays a lot with words and I believe she put all the instrumentation after that. Adele on the other hand, I always picture like sitting by the piano trying new melodies.

    ReplyDelete
  104. Haha yeah it's hilarious. I didn't even have to click the link to know what it was haha.

    ReplyDelete
  105. Carrie Underwood?

    ReplyDelete
  106. Yeah Opie was wandering the dessert for 12 years in search of Kelly Clarkson.

    ReplyDelete
  107. Lana all day errrrday.

    ReplyDelete
  108. I love the fact that you see Lana as more like a rapper.

    ReplyDelete
  109. Hey everybody! I just wanted to know who's your favourite "whistler" and why.
My personal favourite is Minnie Riperton (Mariah's a close second). She had such control over her whistles... She was so amazing and it's so sad that she died so young...

    ReplyDelete
  110. Quick, name 5 of your favorite right now divas. Not past, not used to be (as in Mariah's voice in her 20s, if Mariah in her 40s is your favorite right now, that's fine), favorite right now. Any criteria - voice only, voice and image, stage presence etc, up to you! I'll go - off the top of my head:

    Jessie J
    Pink
    Sia Furler
Amy Heidemann from Karmin (she's better than Ke$ha)
Madonna (yes, even today - and yes I'm totally biased and you can't stop me - ha!)

    ReplyDelete
  111. Woah! Now THAT is contralto. Thanks for sharing!

    ReplyDelete
  112. I think she's a mezzo.

    ReplyDelete
  113. Jessie J's new album and Dr. Dre's latest album that was supposed to come out 10 years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  114. I prefer Foxes' voice on this track. There's a vulnerability in her voice that Jessica's doesn't seem to have.

    ReplyDelete
  115. Notes on paper = mezzo; Depth and timber = alto

Same arguments that apply when talking about Alicia Keys, Lana Del Rey, and Adele

    ReplyDelete
  116. Opie, I grew up in Hawaii and have seen dozens of Filipina girls (and young women) that look just like this. How old is she? She does not look unusually healthy.

    ReplyDelete
  117. I am just in love with YouTube. They have really come a long way and artists on YouTube are now collaborating with each other. I am especially in love with the YouTube vocal trinity: Natalie Weiss, Scott Hoying, and Luke Edgemon

    ReplyDelete
  118. Yes but alto, contralto, and mezzo are not the exact same thing. I don't like labeling people altos because alto is simply toooooo broad. Anything from a lower set soprano to a high baritone fall under the term alto. Mezzo soprano is more specific of a term and for women it is the widest voice type with very soprano like mezzos like early Beyonce to thick mid level mezzo sopranos like P!nk, Adele, and Toni Braxton (voice is very dark but not very low. Past her lower register sits a typical textbook mezzo-soprano) to the lowest of the low like Brandy, and Jasmine Sullivan. Don't let where the voice sits fool you either. These women have passagios between E4 and A4 which places them all as mezzos. A true contralto's first passagio sits parellel to that of a tenor. It is between B3 and rarely above E flat.

When I get a chance to get on my computer I will check to see if she is mezzo or contralto.

    ReplyDelete
  119. Well, I have seen plenty skinny girls and I know Filipina girls are of very slight build often but I am looking at the bones in the face as well as skinniness of body.
And a girl of 17 , even when skinny, typically has less bone showing in the face.

Now maybe this particular girl is naturally exceptionally skinny but I believe odds are against that. Not just because of nature but also because this kid has been trying to get famous since she was like 10 years old. And the pressures put on women in the industry are a fact.

Since nobody here knows the girl intimitaly, none of us know what is actually the deal with Jessica.

All I say is, to ME, she looks way too skinny.

Mark seems to think that is some kind of insult. I think that is a terribly dangerous message to sent to girls, so I argued him but I am not going to go in an argument about what is the case with Jessica. Again, none of us can tell for sure.

  120. Yes, I do not know about the technicalities but Whitney's voice went through a big decline in a fairly short time. Mariah's voice also has declined.
Neither Barbra's nor Shirley Bassey's nor Robert Plant nor many others who did do a fair amount of belting went through this.
From what I know all of them didn't follow a perfect diet or refrained from all smoking and drinking.

My conclusion is, it is more likely extreme belting harms a voice than what one eats.

    ReplyDelete
  121. LOL Yes, but unlike Hannah says, I wasn't wandering the dessert. I was dwelling on civilized lands. Problem was, I was avoiding the wastelands of pop charts and the likes. How was I to know Kelly was hiding there?

    ReplyDelete
  122. I never avoid dessert Hannah. Best part of the meal. ;-)

  123. I think Carrie's success is less wide than Kelly's. Carrie is mostly big in the US.

    ReplyDelete
  124. "even on Idol" ? This girl has been trying to make it since she was 10 or younger probably.

    ReplyDelete
  125. Its really hard to characterize the pros because they usually have such
massive ranges. Finding their tessituras would take some work. Thank you
very much for doing that (once you get to your computer).

    I
think a lot of us characterize them wrong, depending on what notes they
can reach etc. Maybe I'm too used to seeing lower scale mezzos labeled contraltos (incorrectly) but you gotta admit, there is a huge difference
in Christina Aguilera or Beyonce mezzo and an Lana Del Rey or Pink
    mezzo.

I think depth and tone is important. That's why I labeled
this lady a contralto. Her A4s sound so much deeper and bolder and "down there" than
say Katy Perry's A4 (who I've seen labeled as a contralto).

    ReplyDelete
  126. agreed, lana is building a good track record of consistent brilliance.

    ReplyDelete
  127. You made a good point here. Let's wait for who really knows about it, because to me even Alicia Keys isn't a contralto. =/

    ReplyDelete
  128. Bey

    Nicki

    Gaga

    RIhanna

    Britney

  129. I was expecting this to get messy but I guess i'm going to have to be the one who talks about the elephant in the room, why is Opie such a little bitch?

    ReplyDelete
  130. LOL You share first...why are you?

    ReplyDelete
  131. Although there were other factors at play with Mariah and Whitney. Whitney's voices was damaged due to substance abuse, and Mariah's because of her nodules. I'm not saying that the extreme belting didn't contribute, but I think there were other factors that contributed to their vocal decline.

    ReplyDelete
  132. I like her. I really didn't think her first album was all that great (Little Bit, Breaking It Up, and My Love are my jams though LOL). I liked her second album a lot better. She isn't the greatest songwriter, but this is something that she admits herself. Apparently, writing in English is difficult for her, but she does it anyway to connect with a wider audience.

    ReplyDelete
  133. Oh no you didn't Opie! LOL It's not just Americans though. When I went to Puerto Rico to visit family, I was served huge portions. Admittedly, it could have been the fact that it was my first time meeting a lot of my family, and they just wanted to make me feel comfortable LOL. I was so full every day.

    ReplyDelete
  134. Yes, I'm sure the cocaine didn't help but let's face it lots of singers have been addicts to some drug.
But my point really was I have never heard of any singer losing their voice due to too much fast food and Coca Cola.

    ReplyDelete
  135. Finally watched the video. At first impression she definitely sounds like a mid level mezzo-soprano along the lines of P!nk and Alicia Keys but she's a bit more steely than them but on the slight. In actuality she sounds like if Haley Reinhart was a lower set mezzo. They have similar nasal qualities and similar vocal thickness Judy two different placements and belting tones.

As for Lana Del Rey she is not really a mezzo but I can see the confusion. Christina is a light lyric mezzo who is thirsty to be much bigger. She is indeed comparable to the likes of Beyonce but trying to find a clip of her singing naturally and with decent technique will take hours if not decades.

As for Katy Perry, she is one of those rare full lyric sopranos with horrid technical ability and sucky projection. She is not a mezzo, just has a dark voice slightly lower than typical soprano tessitura and a thick mid voice. The soprano fach is wide too. Katy is one of the lowest set sopranos that I can just think of. That also explains why Katy's A4 lacks meat. That is the equivalent of a tenor belting out upper third octave notes.

But anyways, plenty of mezzos sing in the contralto tessitura (if you are looking from a classical standpoint) because pop music requires no projection. Let's say a lower lyric mezzo like Kimbra would sing opera. She would have to project all her low notes and probably couldn't go lower than f#3. Brandy, a woman known for stooping down into the 2nd octave quite a bit probably couldn't project operatically past B2.

Singing operatically, I struggle to project below Bb2 because of my voice type but that doesn't mean it is my lowest note. The operatic range basically shows how low a vocalist can go while remaining audible without the aid of a microphone across a huge room. In opera projection is everything and the fact that in pop, we have microphones, we don't have a need for projection so a woman can hit a g#2, g2 or f2 with much more ease than she can at full projection. That is what people get mixed up when it comes to pop ranges: classical standards which are clearly defined and pop standard which have not.

  136. I'm excited for Janelle's new album! I really loved her debut!

    ReplyDelete
  137. LOL I think you are probably on the money there Mel. But that happens everywhere. Especially older generation. Food = love.
Even here in Holland. My aunt always tries to stuff me too

    ReplyDelete
  138. If Lana's not a mezzo what is she???

    ReplyDelete
  139. I feel like Zedd is about to become the new David Guetta. He's been producing for big name artists across the globe. Apparently, he'll be producing Gaga's new album, and he recently produced a song for Namie Amuro: http://www.metacafe.com/watch/10763866/namie_amuro_heaven_mv_1080p/ Call her basic and generic if you like, but I have a soft spot for this miserable faced woman.

    ReplyDelete
  140. I think especially the way she structures her songs, like Live or die or Off to the races, shows a great influence of rap songs plus the way she uses rhymes

    ReplyDelete
  141. Pure perfection Christina http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ad7ZR1Hkw6c

    ReplyDelete
  142. She is what many would describe an intermediate soprano. The type of intermediate she is a soprano dugazon, basically a lyric soprano voice which has a very good grasp on low notes. Serendipity knows a bit more about it than I so that'd be the place to start. There are quite a few other intermediates as well. The soprano falcon is one. It is a lower set voice with a great upper extension and the endurance to stay in the soprano tessitura. Then you have soubrettes.

    ReplyDelete
  143. Surprisingly, I liked that Namie song. Don't know why because usually I don't like that kind of music but whatever the difference is..I liked that one.

    ReplyDelete
  144. She's a mezzo.
Sounds like Hayley Reinhart if she was a mezzo tbh.

    ReplyDelete
  145. Dugazon.
A light-lyric soprano with the tessitura and colouring of a mezzo soprano.

    ReplyDelete
  146. Contralto. I'm definitely okay with that classification

    ReplyDelete
  147. I think it's the best cover of a music from Live that I ever heard.

    ReplyDelete
  148. Oh, I definitely agree. Come to think of it, Gaga looks like someone who has snorted one too many coke lines (Gaga stans don't come for me, you know it's true). I think Maroon can attest to the fact that eating unhealthy meals does not negatively affect your voice LOL. No shade Maroon, but you're always talking about some dish that sounds like a recipe for diabetes and high cholesterol.

    ReplyDelete

And no shade taken...lol I eat like a mad trucker in china town.

    ReplyDelete
  151. I think she got up to B4/C5 pitch in belt but was she a mezzo at the time?

Anyways I like the acting she potrayed... Now be a good Seren O'deary and POST ALL PERFORMANCES!!!!!

  152. Definitely, it's the same in Puerto Rico. I remember being afraid of turning down anything that was given to me because I didn't want to offend any of my family members. I experienced hospitality that you don't see too often in the U.S. Not trying to get all sentimental and icky LOL, but a lot of my family in Puerto Rico is very poor, so to see such generosity when they have next to nothing was new to me and I really appreciated it.

    ReplyDelete
  153. Bey and Gaga are probably in my next 5. She might be there in Nov when her new album drops. I also like Lana Del Rey, Alicia Keys, Katy, Ke$ha... So many massively talented ladies are not on my list not because I don't think they're good, I'm just not into their sound or songs.

    ReplyDelete
  154. Maybe you can't resist her miserable charm? ;) haha. I also kind of have a soft spot for zedd because he's a cutie. I'm so superficial sometimes LOL.

    ReplyDelete
  155. I love that rendition but I can't really judge how it stacks up to other Live covers. I only know the band from two songs now. That one and the collaboration with Shelby. Which is pretty good I think.

btw They thought so to. When they came to Holland, they asked the people from that show to see if Anouk would come and sing it with them.
Which turned out to be disappointing imo. The guy's voice didn't mix well with her's, he is not very good at duetting and any way not same level vocalist as Anouk.

    Here's the song with Shelby...

  156. She belts Bb's during the choruses and gets up to a C#5 at times.
I've talked with some others and they say that she was a contralto around this time as well. Very rare to have a contralto voice around the age of 19.

    ReplyDelete
  157. LOL I was talking about the music tbh. She does look a bit " miserably" I agree. Not really my type. Nor is Zedd of course but I do see he's a cutie.
But as far as guys go..I'd probably sooner go for the Dean Martin type.;-)

    ReplyDelete
  158. Hahaha you really DO have a way with the phrases Maroon.

    ReplyDelete
  159. Poor people are often more generous. They Know!
We've always been poor but my dad was for instance a great tipper.
Puerto Rico sounds fun. I don't know if it's the name or my long crush on Gigi Fernandez but always sounded like a place I'd love to visit. Probably no comparison in reality but in my imagination it and Cuba are similar in atmosphere and kind of people.

    ReplyDelete
  160. I was wondering, because the C#5 was appropriately bright but fourth octave notes were brighter but I got a feeling they were headier.
    She is just stellar.

    ReplyDelete
  161. Thanks. lol

    ReplyDelete
  162. All I heard was poor laryngeal placement. She can sing but she keeps muddying her voice by dampening her larynx. I have been a big fan of this girl far before my knowledge of music grew. But her speaking voice is soft and high but her singing voice is lower and thicker? She is a lighter mezzo than what she is trying to be.

    ReplyDelete
  163. bey and gaga are the only two true performers/vocalists on that list
granted theyre not the best in the world they sure are much more talented than the rest you listed IMO
gaga is just an artist at heart and you see it in the fact that she takes risks despite what ignorant people
and bey is just the performer of this generation - even i do have doubts about people constantly claiming she steals lyrics or writes a few lines a song and says "she wrote the song"

but either way both are good vocalists and dancers and also two of the nicest pop girls out right now

    as for @joel
i love lana i think shes very underrated and i do like alicia but katy and kesha ....no.....

this was very hard cuz i mostly listen to rock band like breaking benjamin and bands like city and colour soo yeah tough to pick five

  168. What is peoples favourite break-up song? I have been trying to find the perfect one to describe my situation, here goes!

So my Canadian lover decides he is moving home at the end of the year so I decided cut it off now as I don't want to be starting university and my first work placement with the course when he leaves, meaning I would be a mess trying to get through something as important as my course is to me. The sad thing is though I am genuinely relieved and glad its actually over....

I need someone to find me a song that relates to this lyrically as I don't wanna taint my love for Kelly, Mariah ect by using one of their songs lol :D

    ReplyDelete
  171. congrats on uni ! i start uni in september :) .pink has a great number of break up songs as does lana del rey in her back catalogue. my personal go to songs are :

one in a million by millionaires
    blind by kesha
kill your boyfriend by natalia kills
    f**k you by lily allen

i like to keep it upbeat in such times but by far my favourite thing to do is pour myself a drink of something strong and put the queen amy Winehouse on .

  185. You got me there, Opie. Interesting enough, "diva" is exactly the reason Beyonce is NOT in my top 5. The things she does (like yelling at a fan trying to take a picture of her at a concert) just turns me off just enough to keep her off my list.

    ReplyDelete

    5 only? Dang.

    Mariah Carey
    Kelly Clarkson
Marina Diamandis (I'm somehow really really REALLY into her!)
    Florench Welch
    P!nk

I would have included Christina Aguilera, Lana del Rey & Leona Lewis, but we all know the problem with Xtina...
Lana can sing but her live settings are a bit of an acquired taste (still love her a lot, btw!)
Leona Lewis seems to be getting some pitching problems too lately, my guess would have been her nosejob, but Serendipity stated that it was because she strained a lot, hence the vocal problems now.

  191. MARIAH - the queen of all singers of all time.

Christina - I think she is very consistent when it comes to her voice, her music might not be that great anymore, but the girl still can sing the sh*t out of a song.

Lana - her voice is unique, people may say she can't perform live but I think there are plenty of great performances by her, and she can also write great songs too.

Florence - unique and revolutionary visual, voice and style. her songs are grand and she knows how to make a performance.

Björk - album after album she is still the most visionaire singer of all time, she has a style and a voice that cannot be copied or compared.

    ReplyDelete
