The Legend (with a capital letter!) that is Cher took to the Voice USA to spread the camp Gospel to a new generation of listeners. Rejoice and receive it gratefully, young'uns! Rocking some kind of hybrid wig, and an outfit that you won't find knocking about your local high street, the Diva had the crowd suitably hyped with her new single, Woman's World. Sure, there was a backing track going on, but her live vocals were pretty strong over the top, so all was okay! If I'm honest, I thought Cher couldn't sing live anymore, but she sure shut me up with this performance. Shame on me for doubting her! I only wish her Burlesque co-star had been there to catch the performance!
I already covered my thoughts on the single, here: it's good but not great. Still, it's almost unbelievable that its release marks the entertainer's fifth decade in the industry! When will your fav be able to boast such a feat!? NEVER- that's when! And she's still going strong, even now! Whatever this member of the Diva aristocracy is taking, I want (desperately need?) some of it! I have my suspicions that she's made a deal with this lovely lady, but I'm yet to one hundred percent confirm it...
Thoughts?
I loved her performance! She was really good. The styling though... that's an other story...
ReplyDeleteLove love love love love LOVE her. This song is actually quite mediocre, but my obsession with her is back thanks to the song! Although during the verses she is heavily backed by a pre-recorded track, she sings in the chorus without any. Always liked her tone... but it sometimes feels like a drag queen... LOL.
ReplyDeleteAs for the wig and outfit, maybe she's trying not to stereotype women into only those princess barbie-ish kind singing this song.
No comment on the song but she is an inspiration. I wanna be kicking it with the banshees when I'm 68 years old...JS. And her voice is to die for.
ReplyDeletethat weave:no
ReplyDeletethat outfit:no
vocals:yes
song:yes
i didnt grow up with cher's music but i love this and her. she's fairing far better than madonna look wise ....maybe because she wears clothes.she sounds good but sliped abit on parts altho that can be excused as first performance nerves,a true legend and pro.
I actually like the weave and outfit. It just screams Cher.
ReplyDeleteThat weave, yhes. Outfit, not so much.
ReplyDeleteCher will always be to me the one and true queen. Mariah is royalty, Cher is a Goddess! XD Now that I got that out of my system- Cher still slays live even at her age. Im glad to see shes getting some Current mainstream recognition.
ReplyDeleteI think there are singers who could have sung that better but ..there's something about Cher which makes you believe her so completely when she sings " this is a woman's world". Catchy tune.
ReplyDeleteThe headdress..hmm, but the whole outfit is so Cher.
The woman Rules! I enjoyed that.
Her voice is distinctive enough to really make most of her songs listenable. Even if the material is not refreshing, Cher has the enthusiasm, timbre, and style to really bring fun to something that is quite old.
ReplyDeleteChristina was there, she performed earlier with Pitbull
ReplyDeleteI would agree with that. That was in my mind as I wrote my comment. :-)
ReplyDeleteBut this particular tune I happened to enjoy and I think still would have if some other capable singer had been singing it.
You know as much as I really cannot be bothered with the single itself I really liked this performance. Cher is showing the young pups how a song should be delivered live, the vocal, the costumes, the stage production. She is a legend after all though!
ReplyDeleteI look forward to hearing more from her, I might be tempted to dig out some of her older works, cannot get me enough of Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves! Great song, classic! But then there are so bloomin many to choose from :D
Here is Christina's performance for last night
ReplyDeletehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HVauMijz_Og
Oh dear, Christina didn't sound good here at all. The start sounded like she had little to no footing with the song, then in came the strained throaty notes!
ReplyDeleteI might be sounding a little harsh but its probably more to do with the fact I hate the song and Pitbull. I feel neither of them do anything positive where Christina is concerned.
That mess is a lost cause...let's give her throat the proper funeral -_-....
ReplyDeleteHaha indeed, with all the abuse she has caused her cords one might suggest getting the anti-christ to perform said funeral Lol harsh huh? :D
ReplyDeleteNot really, harsh...more so honest....
ReplyDeleteThe first belts sounded a little better mixed, but all after she just started hollering and screaming.
ReplyDeleteHa I hoped you would say that!
ReplyDeleteLOL Serendipity yesterday was proposing she had some sort of contract with the devil to have fans as delusional as hers and that instead of asking for loyal fans she should have asked for good vocal technique. I died
ReplyDeleteHaha I missed that, further proof clearly that this is indeed the case!
ReplyDeleteI was listening to Christina yesterday (WooHoo to be exact) then Bound to You came on and my ears just about combusted...again further evidence haha
Aye, the usual crack! But then as she says she doesnt care how she sounds. Perhaps when she cannot make any sound any longer because of her abuse she will, but then it will be too late! Very sad really!
ReplyDeleteI felt meh about this performance.
ReplyDeleteWow, Christina was just ..horrid. Still loving the song though. And still not feeling the Pitbull hatred.
ReplyDeleteI think Christina knows what to do regarding proper vocal technique, but when she see that crowd, it all changes. Its a diva antic to go with what has made her money in the long run. There have been other moments where she is singing and proper technique is used. Also, her famous "Christina Sound" isn't her natural voice. Her voice is naturally softer, but she doesn't use it and uses improper techniques to make a bigger sound, which has damaged her voice over the years
ReplyDeleteWell she is stupid for compromising her vocal health.... I give her 5 years before she can't even speak....
ReplyDeleteLOL I'm the wrong person to ask. I know near to nothing of such technical things. I just have ears and years. She just sounded terrible there. As if she had little control over her vocals.
ReplyDeleteSee above, I know hardly anything about " proper vocal technique" . I just went by my ears and it sounded terrible. She seemed to struggle, seemed trying to do something but failing badly at it. Why technically it went wrong I have no idea but this seemed to go to vocal control to me. I don't think she was going for anything special though.
ReplyDeleteI do know she sounded way better the previous video DD reviewed of this song.
And like I said, I still like the tune itself. :-)
Holy crap, go Cher! 67 and singing like she's MAYBE in her 40s or late 30s. That is one hell of a voice, one hell of a technical approach, and a magnificent star coming back to the limelight.
ReplyDeleteu like the song? really
ReplyDeleteand for me the biggest thing about pitbull is that he is basically talking (i cannot consider him a rapper) and he is still using a really heavy backing track
christina was pretty bad too and i still dislike her grunting and gargling - but on a good note, she looked very good! definitely see her weight loss
and overall christina's technique during her performances for the past years has just been bad - obviously there are exceptions but i just dont consider her a good vocalist anymore
i thought the performance was okay
ReplyDeletebut i have always loved cher - i just find her very genuine and i have always felt that she has never gotten the credit she deserves
PS. I still love her, but I do notice her terrible way of singing too y'know. I just love her older records... her newer albums are also my favorite... but let's face it... those vocal cords needs proper funeral.
ReplyDeleteYes, Really. I like this song. The song itself. :-)
ReplyDeleteAnd since I am not into rap I don't care whether someone claims to be rapping but isn't or is bad at it or anything. Don't know the guy, have no expectations and have no issue with his vocal tone. There's nothing for me to dislike him for.
I also have no big love for Christina nor big expectations. I've seen her in the past do one or two excellent performances on big occasions. Kudos to her on those because they were truly outstanding. But not familiar with her work other than the reviews on this blog.
She sounds dreadful in this video. Clearly going for something and not making it.
Christinas placement has gotten a little better but she is so SICK sounding! God, she needs a break.
ReplyDeleteMy ears need a break from her shouts too :(
ReplyDeleteDD I BEG YOU: A REVIEW FOR WE CAN'T STOP
ReplyDeleteWell a lot of them are already really low anyway. Lol
ReplyDeleteA break? What do you think she's been doing the past few months?!
ReplyDeleteI feel a lot of the time she has a song that isn't vocally challenging (such as this) and so decides to inject some of her "unique vocal stylings" into it. For me the song sucks overall apart from her part because she's singing within her comfort range and using her natural tone with little need to strain, etc. It's catchy and all but it's probably worse collaboration she's done, yet one of his biggest international hits.
ReplyDeleteOh, she knows alright. Her techniques are at their best (although not perfect) when she stands still and sings ballads. She does still use her natural voice - in this song for example, in her new Spanish duet and recently when singing Blank Page live.
ReplyDeleteYou can clearly see/hear that she couldn't hear the right key/note to start on at the beginning. The belts weren't great and there were a lot of grunts and growls thrown in there but the rest wasn't that bad.
ReplyDeletePerforming with Pitbull and getting back her chair on the voice which will result in her singing even more often
ReplyDeleteSince the end of the 3rd season she's performed about half a dozen a times, that's quite a bit of rest tbh. The coaches don't perform that much really, only 3-4 times in a season, although she did try and plug her album quite a few times last time.
