Mariah Carey Performs Medley @ American Idol

Mariah Carey singing At Idol

You better believe Mariah Carey was going to work that vast back catalogue of hers when she finally hit the American Idol stage to perform! With a vast chunk of the home audience probably being too young to remember Mariah's glory days in the 1990's, this was a smart move by the Diva to educate them (and any haters) as to just why she's deservedly sitting at the judges' table. The fact that it'll lift sales of her entire catalouge I'm sure had nothing to do with this decision(!)

Having had the original Idol audience cleared so that she could be surrounded by her faithful and supportive "Lambily", Mimi began the medley with her début single Vision of Love. From the first few seconds of the video you could see she wasn't entirely comfortable on the stage, but she seemed to relax- never completely- as the performance went on. Luckily the voice was surer than her demeanour, with her tone being particularly impressive throughout! Sure, there was some constriction and pushing at the top her range, but overall her voice sounded to be in great condition! [I'll leave it to you guys to discuss any lipping/editing/dubbing- I'm not going to risk getting shanked by Lambs today!]

However, it wasn't the smoothest of medleys, with too many songs being crammed into too short a time slot. As a result of this sausage-stuffing mentality, the whole performance felt rushed, and latest single #Beautiful- which needed the hardest push- was the biggest causality of this disjointed approach. But what really got my goat was the awkward and just darn ugly transitions that occurred between the hits! Surely they could have found a way to integrate the songs better! Perhaps it was all very last minute.com- which might go some way to explaining the general uneasiness of the whole thing.

Still, it was great to hear Mimi's voice sounding so strong. Bring on the (rumoured) world tour!!

  1. Omg. Laved it. Laved it. Laved it.

Funny though, I've been listening to her whole lot again since Almost Home.

  3. Wouldn't put any money on that being completely live but she did sound good. Those transitions, I agree, were very poor.
I liked 'Beautiful' at the end of that medley...it immediately sets a mood and I really think that is a great song.

  4. I liked #Beautiful most too! The others sounded a bit less feely for me. Probably just me though, right?

  6. Some parts were definitely lipped. The editing is terrible though. It's all a mess. Mimi did well though! I still honestly think she has one of the voices in the industry.

  7. The only song that I was 100% positive wasnt live was #beautiful. It didnt even sound dubbed. Sounded exactly like the single track.

  8. Really? You think it was lipped? I really feel the opposite. :-)

  10. H.O.R.R.I.B.L.E LIVE/LIPSYNC PERFORMANCE!!! THE WORST I'VE SEEN IN YEARS. That's not the Mariah Carey I know and (still) love.

  12. Ugh, fuck the haters on this damn website. AMAZING PERFORMANCE.

  13. This was poorly executed and horribly lipped. She ought to be a shame of herself, as well as embarrassed. You let one of your (many) nemesis come on stage with a voice so thin and outperform the hell out of you.

  17. i hear her breathing into the mic at random intervals as is expected. her pronunciation is a lot better than i recall it ever being. she may have some overdubbing during her high notes to support her during the transitions to appear smooth but other than that it sounded as i expected from mariah.

  18. it had dubbing on it, i could see it mostly during her whistle notes as support because very few people can match how accessible she has it.

  21. I know. But I thought people wouldn't enjoy this terrible performance.

  22. I just listened to that other audio vid....I stand by my opinion. :-)

  23. J.Lo also lipped.

  24. I think the thing is that a lot of audiences these days don't think too much about actual vocal ability. If a singer can belt a few notes or stay on pitch in a ballad, people instantly assume it was a great performance. Mariah's great, but this wasn't her best performance, but audiences hear "legend" and they instantly want to have that on their iPods.

This horrible performance put "#beautiful" on #8 in Itunes. It was #19 before. Even HERO, My all and Make it happen "reappeared" on itunes list. How come?
