The club sound didn't work for Leona Lewis, neither did the edgier, British inspired sound found on Trouble. So what direction does Leona turn in now for the third single from Glassheart? Back to (safer) pastures already traversed, of course !
New single Lovebird is ballad that has "classic" Leona written all over it. I'm not a fan of it, but it should resonate with those who haven't yet got their heads around her recent attempts at a new musical direction. It will also keep fans of her original sound appeased, and assure them she isn't leaving them behind. Besides, it's winter: what better season to release a ballad.
Performing the track live on Daybreak, the Diva gave a slightly less polished performance than usual; but as her "usual" is pretty close to perfection, that's definitely not an insult. Singers are renowned for hating early morning showings- because of the negative affect it has on their voice-so I think it was probably the time of day, rather than her voice itself, which was the problem.
Also, LOL at whatshisfacefromxfactor calling Leona Lewis a "beautiful seahorse" before she sang!! Maybe that's what put her off!
This song sounds like classic Leona indeed. The entire introductory lick is reminiscent of the synthed organ on "Bleeding Love." Even though this wasn't a dazzling show and was relatively simple, she's damned talented to sound so great at the crack of dawn even with a slight bit of pitchness. Put me up there and we're going to have some serious issues! She still pulled this one off.
ReplyDeleteI don't think it's because of the morning voice. I remember her performing on one morning show and still being so perfect. Or I might just be hallucinating.
ReplyDeleteShe actually sounds a little bit sick. You can hear the nasality when she sings lower falsetto notes. She sounded almost the same when she was singing "I See You" a few years ago on some show. Can't remember when and which show though.
ReplyDeleteWho is this girl? Is she selling something door to door already?
ReplyDeleteDiva? Singer? What? Give it up, Leona.
I love Leona's voice. It's so sweet, alluring and ethereal... I find it one of the most charming and magical voices in today's music. She needs to improve a little bit her control, though. She sounds a little bit shaky and pitchy.
ReplyDeleteI really like this song, it reminds me of the old and amazing Leona. I don't think the club songs are her thing, the ballads and mid-tempos is where her voice sounds better.
Probably having a bad day, or a morning situation. Her controls are usually really really great. I might be biased but... yeah. I can't help it.
ReplyDeleteWow, this is pitchy. And her voice sounds... thinner out of the studio? Is this normal? Anyway, still wayyyyy better than all the performances Xtina's had this year. Lol.
ReplyDeleteBrilliant vocal performance considering...but thats about it. I would much have rather heard her tackle Fireflies...or the brilliant title track Glassheart...
ReplyDeleteit happens early in the morning, its harder to get the vocal chords to relax and warm up. even with proper technique it can be easy to become slightly off pitch. Its one of the best times to do exercises but not always the best times to do a full performance like this. But this was still good technically. breathing was perfect as always, but i can tell her lower half was having issues with stability. the falsetto was also a little too lose for her usual stuff.
