[Note: This is an old post I forgot to publish, but as it's such a great little EP I thought it was still worth publishing.]
Ever wonder what it would sound like if Feist and The XX got together to create an album? Well wonder no more as I introduce you to my "currently listening to": Oh Daughter and The wild youth EP.
Electronically sparse backing, muted baselines and echoey XX-esque electric guitar form the backdrop of this 4 song EP. It provides a cool and measured backing for Elena Tonra's -the woman behind the album- soft and hushed voice to bring to life the beautiful and thoughtful lyrics.
Medicine: A piano led, haunting tale of the ravaging effects that some form of substance abuse is having on an individual and those around. It's a song that will ring true for anyone who has experienced someone they care about changing and surrendering their life to an addiction right before their own helpless eyes.
The line "You've got a warm heart, and a beautiful brain, but it's disintegrating because of all the medicine" is a particualry heartbreaking line and is an honest account of how those who watch the sufferer decline can't help but feel.
Love: A song that explores the insecurities a breakup involving infidelity leaves on the innocent party.
Youth: People from the United Kingdom may remember this song being used in an advert for television show Skins. Another song that deals with love and the effect that it can have on an individual.
It specifically deals with a breakup that happened in Elena Tonra's youth, and the bitter ramifications it has had on her relationships since; "if you're in love then you are the lucky ones, because most of us are bitter over someone".
A gem of an EP.
