Duelling Divas: " I Will Always Love You"



This is what happens when us normal, regular folk try to tackle the Whitney Houston version of I Will Always Love You:


Though the critically acclaimed song was written and released by Dolly Parton in 1973, it wasn't until Whitney Houston covered the song two decades later that it really took on the iconic status it now enjoys. In fact Houston's rendition was such a worldwide phenomenon, and so different from the original, that many didn't realise it was a cover or a Country song.



ORIGINAL:
Dolly Parton's version had a sweet sincerity about it, as well as an honest delivery that sold the emotion and story of the song. The song was written by Dolly in response to her professional split from mentor Porter Wagoner, so it's no surprise that the delivery was so convincing.


COVERS:
Whitney Houston put a soul spin on the song that included changes in the structure of the song and in its vocal melody. Interestingly it was the Lisa Ronstadt version that Whitney heard before deciding to cover I Will Always Love You, and not the Dolly Parton original.




Amber Riley: Standard Whitney Houston imitation, with the exact same vocal lines that Whitney used (look out for all the falsetto switching in the climax and the mimicry in her vibrato). It's good, vocally, but nothing more than a pale imitation of Whitney Houston.


Beyonce :I really enjoyed this ambient rendition, just wish it had been longer and that we had heard her tackle the big notes of the song.


Beth Ditto :A simple and honest rendition that is less about the vocal and more about the lyrics. Definitely leans towards the original Dolly Parton version.


Charice: A brave choice starting the song a capella, but it gives the song its requisite atmosphere. Charice plays with the melody here and there, and it gives the song a fresher feel than some of the other versions. I'm not really a fan of the placement of her voice, or the way she flattens it out, but other than that it's a good rendition.


Jennifer Hudson: A haunting rendition that took place days after Whitney Houston's passing. Great vocal, that was controlled and measured. It also showcased well Hudson's solid midrange, which is often overshadowed by her high octave belting.


Jessica Sanchez: Great control, and great technique. This renditions was cut a little short to shoehorn it into the American Idol schedule. I would have loved to have heard her do the whole song, and see how she managed the big, sustained notes after the bridge.



Leona Lewis: A guitar led arrangement that subtly nods to the original. Leona's vocal melody is slightly different from either the original or Whitney's version initially. However, when the bridge hits it veers directly into Whitney Houston's lane. Leona has no problem hitting the notes, or with managing her breath control and this rendition shows how easily she transitions into her falsetto.


Linda Ronstadt: Very much in the vein of the Dolly Parton version, but with a slightly more gusty vocal. It's possible to hear where Whitney Houston took inspiration; sharing a similar, fast, vibrato on certain words and the use of head voice at the end.


Nicole Scherzinger: I really liked the softer take on the first chorus, and her midrange in the verse. However, there seemed to be a lot of tension in the voice when it came to the big notes. This wasn't an issue when she sang a snippet of the song, in response to Simon Cowell's shade, during the auditions of X-Factor USA. (I felt really sorry for the girl on stage, though).

  1. what a great post , most of the videos gave me chills when they hit the notes ! i have to say Leona was stunning vocally and moved with such ease through her range but i also had to vote for Nicole scherzinger because i was for some reason in the mind she possessed little to no vocal ability and i was blown away by her ability in the second video ! i was also surprised to learn dolly was the first to record this song ! x

  4. LOVE THIS POST EXCELLENT!!! I love the comparison of each singer's rendition to the original and the videos you picked couldn't have been more on point. I totally agree with your comment about the placement of Charice's voice. Jennifer Hudson's version was ok, honestly it wasn't her best. I personally LOVED Jessica Sanchez's, Nicole's and Leona's versions the best

  5. I wondered when this controversial Duelling Diva's would appear.


    Personally I prefer Dolly's, I am not taking away how incredible Whitney made the song and how she blew everyone away with it its just the writer uses a song to send a message and Dolly did that, I believed the message of the song from her and not so much Whitney (I did until the last massive belted note which shattered any kind of feeling that she had built up).


    As for the the imitators I think Hudson, Ronstadt and Lewis did the best job in covering the song, but that is just down to personal taste.

    In the video used, Dolly herself seems to be influenced by Whitney's rendition as much as all the other singers ( except Ditto and Ronstadt).
    Of the covers I liked Ditto's rendition best. It's a tender song. Who the hell shouts when she is trying to be tender to someone? ;)

    Totally agree with your statement there, I'm not taking anything away from Whitter's version as it was pretty spectacular but that was mainly down to her massive and pretty much perfect voice.

    Not of the song she didn't. This is a tender song. When's the last time you "shouted tenderly".
    The only magic Houston captured is the magic of her vocal ability. Whic we all know was magical..."yes, Whitney, we got it already"
    I'm sorry but anybody who thinks Whitney captured this song perfectly must be utterly unfamiliar with the emotion this song is about.

    truly moving and impressive to me.
    Christ! and this vid makes me love Whitney even more, she's so kind and that smile. I bet she could divide the Red Sea with it :)
    I prefer Whitney's version to Dolly, not only because of her vocals, but the dramatic, yet soulful feelings, from sad beginning to heartbreak and despair when she belts chorus after the pause at the end of the song. Whitney's songs from Bodyguard probably formed my musical taste in childhood, for they're the firts ones I loved.
    And I'm sooo curious how Beyonce's full version would sound, her gorgeous vibrato fits the song perfectly

  33. Pffft Mariah left Whitney hopping on one leg at the Oprah performance of When You Believe, soooo.... In any case, I was talking about melisma. Mariah's voice was always much more dexterous than Whitney's. Just compare the runs Mariah used in "Lead the Way" and "Forever" to any of the ones Whitney did her whole career.

  35. Clearly we have different priorities. Mine ultimately is with the song and it's delivery. Yours seems to lie with vocal acrobatics. This is why I prefer Dolly's rendition of this song and Whitney , for me, isn't even in Streisand's league.

I thought we were attempting a more objective assessment making a sum of timbre/tone, technical control, range, musicality, flexibility, length of time the sounded great, all around length of career.

  66. I never said Mariah was a stronger singer, I simply provided evidence that the two are pretty much evenly matched in that department. Whitney drowns Mariah out in one performance. Mariah wins in the next. There is no clear victor, seeing as they are both inconsistent in that aspect.

    i do believe my original point was that Mariah did better vocal runs, and now you have conceded that point (however ridiculously.)

  68. I'm sorry, but unless you can produce a clip where Whitney does a run that exceeds Mariah in dexterity and intricacy, I consider this a victory. Mariah has done faster, more complicated runs than Whitney ever has- clearly meaning that she has more mastery over the skill than Whitney does. Also, Mariah, as I have said previously, has better note delineation than Whitney (whose runs were always rather sloppy and slurry in comparison.) This actually does constitute for a better run.

  69. Mariah is without a doubt the "queen of melisma." In her prime nobody
    could compare. Whitney, undoubtedly, had the stronger belting voice. So I
    think all things considered they are pretty equal, each having their
    own strengths. However, I disagree that Mariah didn't abuse the melisma a
    bit. They were always so well tailored to her songs but there were times
    I wish she would have just sustained the notes. Especially when
    belting. It seemed rare she would hold the notes and she had such a
    pretty, resonant voice. When she held notes with vibrato it was awesome.
    Songs like 'forever,' while good...she turns every single word into a 40 syllable extravaganza.

  71. What do you mean she needs better control? I agree that she should reign in her melisma (and she does, now) but as for her voice, I'd say she had far more control over it than Whitney. I've never seen Whitney able to use her voice in the complicated ways Mariah does. Mariah could control tone and texture. Whitney could play with tones and registers, but never had the technical control of Mariah.


    Also, after both experienced vocal decline, it was obvious that Mariah could control what remained far better than Whitney could.


    tl;dr: Mariah has excellent control.

  72. How do you define a stronger belting voice? Loudness? Resonance? For me, Mariah always had a more impressive belting sound than Whitney. In Whitney's earliest tracks, her high belting sounded like...squealing, a bit. Forced, high, and nasal. Examples include "The Greatest Love of All" and "Didn't We Almost Have it All"


    Mariah's high belts at the beginning sounded effortless in comparison. "Anytime You Need a Friend" and "Emotions (the live version, of course.)".

  74. Yes, and Mariah has excellent control even after her peak- with very good technique! I would go as far as to say her control was twice as good as Whitney's. She sang with ease, she played with tone and texture. Whitney could not control her texture or tone, and even had trouble with breath control- just watch her performance of "I Know Him So Well". Unlike the studio version, she doesn't hold a note for any longer than two or three seconds.


    As for restraint... I suspect you haven't heard her new material. Mariah is very much restrained. Her new songs generally have a grand total of 0 runs. She does indulge once in a while... IWTKWLI comes to mind... but generally doesn't.

  75. Struggled with breathing? Yeah whitney may have their but that wasn't a constant trait. I see we will never see this end and by the way Mariah better than Whitney belts lets do we need to show those When you believe clips every time Whitney and her belt Whitney over powered her.

  78. LOL at you saying Whitney's runs were better. She lacked clarity- the notes all became a jumble, not clearly delineated like Mariahs. In a run, each note should be distinct- even in the studio, Whitney struggled with this.

    It's just that I know I am opiniated and will argue my opinions vehemently. But not with the intent to bully the other into ''my'' view. More because I likethe sparring. A good opponent sharpens the mind.
    And imo both you and Reiko are a joy both to spar against and with. :-)

  92. I was shocked to see Whitney won this. I was so confident that everyone would vote for Dolly. I know Whitney is talented and everything but after listening Dolly's version I feel like Whitney is a robot programmed to sing every note perfectly but no emotion at all.
