I never much cared for her music with the group N-Dubz, and haven't liked her new song Young; but I've always thought there was something interesting about X-Factor judge Tulisa Contostavlos' voice.
Taking to the microphone at Radio 1's Über cool Live Lounge, Tulisa took on Sia and David Guetta's belter of a track Titanium. An apt song choice considering all the controversy surrounding her and that tape at the moment...nuff said.
There are some tuning issues at the start, but the tone of her voice remains interesting and engaging throughout. Initially it's soft and slightly airy, but as she builds to the chorus, switching to her belt, it takes on a rockier edge and a more confident and assured tone. It's a delivery choice that works really well with the lyrics of the song, and proves further to me that there is something a little special about this young woman's voice.
Now all Tulisa needs is the material to show that off.
Very good vocal performance. Tulisa has a solid voice - her N Dubz material didn't really show this off. She could probably pull an Adele-style ballad off pretty well too.
ReplyDeleteI'm hesitant to listen to anything associated with David Guetta, and I looked up the original before listening to the cover, and I actually like the song (and the cover). I'm not to familiar with Tulisa, I just know she was a judge on the X Factor UK.
ReplyDeleteI agree, she is quite good. I thought that when she took the stage with lil mix that she held her own pretty well...shame she is so annoying, and well lets face it, a bit sl**y....or maybe I am just being a man bitch...
ReplyDeleteShe has obv never had a voice lesson. She is doing her living best to push those notes and the top end out.she becomes rigid and constricted in the neck and throat seems really forced.I'm all for performance and feeling the song but she came across constipated.I was like have a senokot already! If she continues like this she'll damage her voice. She has a nice raw huskiness to her voice and her range would improve greatly with training.she definitely a contralto in the alexandra Burke league but she has no where near the control and range of Alexandra yet.
ReplyDeleteYou haven't missed much....lol Oh and good luck for tmw! :D
ReplyDeletethis is the problem with a lot of good singers
ReplyDeletethey have bad material and tulisa is proof of that
Thanks! Exams are finally over!
ReplyDeleteShe needs to stop smoking or her voice will only get hoarser and she won't be hitting those notes again.
ReplyDeleteShe did a good job, I thought she sang really well with Lil Mix on the X-Factor too, there are other Live lounge performances out now that y'all should youtube, bloody good stuff!
ReplyDeletewhat is her vocal range?
