[New Video] Florence + The Machine: "Spectrum"

Florence + The Machine have released the video for one of my favourite tracks off of the Ceremonials album, Spectrum.

Keen to mirror the opulence and luscious feel of the track itself, Florence + The Machine enlisted world renowned photographer David LaChapelle to direct the clip.

There are some gorgeous set pieces to be found in the video for Spectrum, for instance the flooded cityscape, and the golden-hued apartment, but it feels like they either ran out of time, or money to really use them to their best advantage. The choreography looked particularly loose. But I suppose that will happen when you're trying to squash in a video shoot while on a world tour.

It's still a gorgeous video, and one that will bear even more fruit for those who understand/appreciate interpretive dance- because there's plenty of it to be found here! Unfortunately, that isn't one of my areas of expertise, so my views remain somewhat superficial.

Speaking of my lack of cultural refinement, did anyone else pick up on the odd placement of the lighting in the first scene...

Spectrum is available to buy on July 8.

  1. I very much enjoyed that. Loved the visuals and to my surprise, the song. Aren't the dancers simply doing a pretty straightforward interpretation? Or is that my cultural refinement not seeing anything deeper than that? Ballet never was my kind of thing.

  3. What is the point of a spell checker if it doesn't work!! ARGH! Thanks for that!

  4. There must have been a reason for the lighting placement, because it would be too silly otherwise. I'll just accept your reasoning. Its easier than thinking it was just an unfortunate choice.lol

  5. It's just a possibility I thought of though, I could be completely wrong. Though seeing as I checked out Florence on Wiki and see not only did she study art but her whole family did, I think she is probably well aware of symbolism of all kinds of cultures. I think likely whatever the reason, there WAS a reason.

  6. Sometimes spell check doesn't realize incorrect spelling if the incorrect version is still an existing word. which leads me to speculate...what's a spetcrum??? Going to look that one up

  7. Yeah, I noticed that Florence had a glowing vagina.

I think this video had a good concept but it looked kinda cheap. Like it looked like they were in a studio and it seemed kinda messy. My favorite Florence video is "Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)."

  8. Cheap as in how much it cost or cheap as in another meaning? Because that video for Rabbit heart looks financially way cheaper to make than this one must have been

  9. I think it was just an unfortunate choice. It seems like they made the video in a hurry anyway and must not have thought about it.

  10. Love the song, and Love the video. When you were speaking of lighting are you referring to her glowing ^&*&^? I mean I usually don't catch things visually as well as I hear things so I don't really notice much else in that scene.

  11. Well I imagine that they spent more money making this video than the Rabbit Heart one, but I think they used the budget more effectively in Rabbit Heart. I'm clearly in the minority in my opinion on this video, hahaha.

  12. I quite enjoyed the video, and this was one of my favorites off of Ceremonials as well. Question though, will you do a review of Marina Diamondi's "Power and Control" video?

  13. I seriously doubt that very much. Which is the most polite way I can think of saying "Hannah, I think you are nuts": :-b
No way is this video made on the cheap and in a hurry and without thinking about it it much.

  14. Well you know what that means, if you are in the minority , you are clearly the one "wrong" ;D

  15. Yeah, even though there's no right or wrong anyway (I imagine that's why you put the wrong in quotes). Anyway, I absolutely love Florence and she doesn't need flashy videos like a lot of singers to make her songs more appealing (I'm not saying she's trying to do that).

  16. Well, we'll just have to agree to disagree. You're not the first person to think I'm nuts, hahaha!

  17. No I meant it more like an indication it was a joke about people who think just because millions of people say something , it must be right.

But it is true there is no "right" and "wrong" morally in tastes. Of course I do think from a personal point of view of my taste that there is a right and wrong taste. But I don't think that judgment means anything BUT in my mind. ;)

  18. To be clear, that's not in itself a bad thing in my book. "Nuts" is way better than "ordinary". :)

  19. Hahahaha, me to! I'd rather be nuts than normal.

  21. Love the vid, the hair though does remind me a bit of Hayley Williams but that can be forgiven, to be honest Ceremonials is a spectacular album, I cannot fault it, a little like Lungs - Awesomeness!
