Vocal Pluses: Jessie J has the ability to sing quick and complex melisma through the range without issue, a feat often noted as being a signature of her style. Along with this ability, she has the control to sing trills, staccatissimo through complex melodies with pinpoint accuracy [Stay With Me], and add texture to vocal lines via grunts and growls.
Her control, in regards to vocal dexterity, is mirrored in her breath control. As a result she can hold notes for lengths of time without loss of quality to the sound [I Will Always Love You (Live)], and sing complex and lengthy vocal lines in a single breath [Domino (live)].
The mid-range leads without issue from the dark lower range and up into the belt. Being versatile, Jessie is able to play with the dynamics, timbre and natural character of the voice to suit whatever she is singing. For instance she can sing with a soft and airy sound; a fuller, cleaner one, with a medium volume; be feminine and warm; or sing with an icy timbre that is infused with aggressive attitude. She relies on her musicality to determine which style is most suitable, and it is this understanding that allows her to sing across multiple genres [blues/ dance/ rap].
The belting range is elastic and energetic, being able to reach high into the fifth octave, with the aid of a head-dominate mix. The lower half of the belting range (below a C5) has more resonance and a fuller sound [Domino] than the extremes, which take on a metallic undertone. Still, Jessie manages to keep a degree of resonance and character even at the top due to her (questionable) technique [Bang Bang] which has her often singing from the throat. This placement is also why there can be an edge present to these notes [Mamma Knows Best (Live)].
The head voice is controlled, of medium weight, warm and measured. She is able to use it within octave-spanning runs [Nobody's Perfect (Live)] and with or without her signature quick vibrato [Flashlight (Live)] .FLashlight
Vocal Negatives: Her technique sounds improper when reaching above an E5, and as a consequence her voice becomes shrill and unstable. The lowest notes are also breathy and hit with a low larynx.
