Alarm bells should have been heeded about the potential crumminess of the impending Born this way when the childlike lyrics were released a few weeks ago. Nevertheless, being a fan and wanting the song to be as epic as promised, I swept the bad lyrics under the "commendable message" carpet and trusted in Gaga's strength of melody and music to carry the song to the promised greatness.
Depressingly, Born this way doesn't just fail to live up to the hype, which to be honest was never going to happen, but more worryingly for what's to come with the album, it fails to succeed in even being a good song. The production and melody sound mediocre at best but even worse is how it sounds like a gayer- who would have thought possible- rehash of Madonna's classic Express yourself (listen to the similarities here)
Young fans may hear Born this way as something new, inspiring and exciting and good for them, it can be their generations (watered-down-version) of Express yourself. However, there are songs out there that get across the same message more eloquently, more sincerely and a whole lot better than Gaga's has here- just contrast it to Marvin Gayes' Whats Going on. "Obliterate 'I Will Survive'"? HA!

ReplyDeleteThe song is mediocre. I really wish it wasn't, but it is. I am a huge GAGA fan, and have been to see her 3 times. The song does not sound like a single at all, more like the 9th track on an album. So underwhelmed and disappointed :(

ReplyDeleteI respect that you like the song but please refrain from churlish comments and tell me why you like it. Perhaps I'll see what you see and the song will grow on me.
Also, I have a post that says how I felt when "Express yourself" debuted and it was pretty much the opposite to what I feel about "Born this way". I think gaga herself probably remembers that feeling, hence her trying to recreate that with this song.
As I expected the song is terrible and to be honest, so is Gaga. The comparisons to Madonna are a joke. Gaga does not have Madonna's sex appeal(she looks FUG on the new Vogue) nor does she have Madonna's stage presence or star appeal. Gaga is too gimmicky and as a gay man I refuse to jump on the band wagon. Young girls and gay men worshipped Madonna because she was empowering, ballsy and the ultimate champ; Gaga on the other hand is condescending (little monsters...how pathetic) and appears to have the loser brigade behind her. Please make her and desperate antics go away already!!!

I just find the whole song exploitive and dumbed down. I know people are commending Gagas' courage for mentioning "transgender" and "Gay" in the lyrics, but please, this is 2011, if it had been a decade ago I might have given more credit. But Bottom line is no one is shocked or surprised by her choice of words.
Give me Katy Perrys "Fireworks", Pinks "Raise your glass up" or even Ke$has "we R who we R". I don't care who wrote, or produced them, I just know that they make me feel more inspired and lifted than Gaga's effort.
Honestly, this is what I expected it to be. Lady Gaga has never really had any substantial songs and if for some reason you really think she does just go listen to her lyrics and then go listen to someone like adele. The beats are good (which is what makes gagas songs) but the lyrics are always mediocre. Don't get me wrong I like Lady Gaga but I never expected her to really blow me away.

ReplyDeleteWhat is funny- or sad depending how you look at it- is Rolling stones Magazine gave Adele's "Rolling in the deep" 3.5/5 stars but Gaga's "Born this way" 4/5.
I'm starting to think I'm missing something with Gaga's track.
I'm scared more and more about this type of communication just for that people buy when like for example when she and her team said that is a future gay anthem...It's like to force people to admit it like a dictate...Gay songs are chosen by gay people.
ReplyDeleteA artist can be inspired by, or pay a tribute for a other artist. But in this track (new?) the line are totally the same...were is creativity? The problem is not just about Gaga...the problem is the crisis in musical industry...majors need to sell a lot...Gaga was create for that. That result poor and quick production for radio. Medias have a big part of responsabilties about this new bussiness way.

ReplyDeleteI find the song utterly forgettable. But unlike every other Gaga song, there is no stuttering nonsensical gibberish making me want to shove sharpened pencils into my ears. It certainly is an anthem song (the only actual resemblance to "Express Yourself" BTW--the pop anthem song structure, that is), whether it will surpass "I Will Survive", meh, only time will tell, but I doubt it. Bless her, however, for actually writing a song specifically about the mo's instead of just attaching meaning after the fact like the above mentioned Pink, Perry (not the best ally really), and Ke$ha whose songs were all recorded and mastered prior to the mass suicides of the babes this past year, which is, from what I understand, why Gaga actually wrote "Born This Way." Strangely, I really like the song when I hear it and am looking forward to seeing how Gaga matures as an artist on her next album based on this sample--having found the last 1.5 album completely unlistenable after the first couple of spins (not aided by the fact that she was completely overplayed on the radio). But like I said earlier, the song doesn't linger as it should. I've already forgotten how it goes.

I used to be a huge fan of hers, because finally a singer seemed to appreciate dancy, catchy bubblegum pop. But I've gone off her because she's so contrived and not as talented as so likes us to think.
Her good luck was meeting the incredibly talented RedOne, who made her repetitive generic songs the hits they became. But she's got a different producer on Born This Way.
I've heard it many times now and can't even remember how it goes.
The litmus test is - if no one knew the singer would it have been a hit? Of course not, it sounds like a losing Eurovision entry.
As for the cheesy subject, does anyone really want to hear a (probably heterosexual!) white woman born into huge wealth patronising everyone??? It's easy for YOU to say GaGa!

I mean, what did you expect? The greatest song of all centuries? Gaga is nothing but a fake, bland and boring copycat. Her songs sucks and her image is completely unoriginal. She was a sellout from the start, but many teens at my school will still think this is the best gay anthem they have ever heard. I feel sorry for my gay friends, they apparently dont have a great taste in music and don´t know Gaga is doing all this spectacles for marketing purposes.
