Nicki Minaj - Vocal Profile/ Range

Vocal Type: Soubrette
Whistle Register: No
Vocal Range: 2 octaves, 4 notes  D3- Bb5
Vocal Strengths: Although classed as a rapper, has demonstrated the ability to carry a melody aptly. Her voice is full of character and energy: able to switch between a thick and heavy timbre to a light and bright one quickly providing brilliant contrast. Her midrange is solid and her chest is capable of hitting the fifth octave.
Vocal Weaknesses: Her chest voice is thin and becomes weaker very quickly as it gets higher.
Recommended Listen: Super Bass, Fly

  1. Her vocal pluses for me is the versatility of her voice, shifting from thin to thick timbre of her voice. It has an attitude in her voice.

Her vocal negativity is being nasal at all times...

  2. I think Nicki is amazing in what she does. She might not be the best singer in the world, but she has an amazing sense of rythm, musicality and is a great rapper.

  3.  Thanks for that,  incorporated it into the profile!

  4. I think Nicki is one of an artist that we should take a look at because she is a person who tend to learn new things. She started as a rapper and now she already had songs which she actually sing in it, for example, Turn Me On or Super Bass and I personally think that she is better than GaGa.

    1. Lol. Gaga has more musicality than her and more professionally trained.

  5. Would Soubrette be really appropriate for her vocal type? I mean it's just that most of the time I see the term used more as a classification for style rather than vocal classification.

  6. I think she's a Light mezzo soprano

  7. soubrette refers to both a voice type(usually a mezzo or a soprano) and a opera roll. but her range is that of a contralto.

  8. You're crazy.

  9. "Stupid Hoe" is the main reason why I hate her.

  10. I actually think that comment was spot on. Nicki's music isn't always to everyone's liking, but she does have an undebatable sense of musicality.

  11. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Nicki has hit an A5 before in her song Young Forever. It's a background note, but it's incredibly audible.

    Here's the link:

It should be right around 2:12 - 2:20. She holds it for about 4 seconds.

  12. I'm tending to agree with yourself

  13. Yeah, DD, I think her range needs revising! Here's a better video link (see 2:18) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ycnwumwcrb4

  14. i dont know if the notes are accurate because those last notes in the video are autotuned and the d#5 was actually sung by easter dean who sang most of the chorus with nicki only doing background

obviously her strength lies in rapping because i dont know if she can hit an f#5 live

  15. Another couple of weaknesses here: poor stamina when dancing (I know that's controversial, but if Gaga and Pink can do it....) and the dodgy 'breakdown' in this vid at 2.30 with the backing singers makes me think she's not much of a live vocalist tbh. However, she gets a big plus for not miming! http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=zocbHkY-J94

  16. I keep "whitelisting" you so your messages with links don't need screening, but it doesn't seem to work with you! what kind of witch craft is this!!! But thanks for the points :D

  17. Ha! I am still on vocal probation! Slap an electronic tag around my larynx!

  18. I never verified so you could be right. I'm sure what with her new album out someone will create a new video with notes from that album. Will change as soon as I find one.

  19. I'm hoping someone will make a new one, what with the new album! I'm keeping my eyes open.

  20. Would likely have never checked out her stuff if not for this blog. I find I quite enjoy her sense of humor and lyric writing ability. Thanks DD

  24. She's definitely NOT a soubrette, that only applies in opera. She's a contralto. Her voice is mostly nasal, thin, really weak and there's no vocal support. I can't tell you if that's her real voice because her tracks are heavily auto-tuned. The only thing I can tell you is that her voice sounds like a cartoon and is really annoying. Not hating on her just telling the truth.
Source: I'm a professional opera singer.

  25. You're right, the one singing the "high" notes actually was Ester Dean.

    ReplyDelete
  26. Lmao I can't even take Nicki singing seriously

    ReplyDelete
  27. i don't think that she is a soubrette.
i think that she possesses a new type of vocal range called
    "GHETTO" hahahahaha lol
    but seriously i don't think she's a soubrette

    ReplyDelete
  28. I'd say she is a Soubrette but she is more of a lower register singer in live performance because she knows her limits to how high she can sing in chest voice but then again through her performances she does a lot of dancing running around and rapping so that could be the reason why she doesn't put on her full potential when she is in a singing performance.

  29. Please do a review on her performance at the AMA's

  30. Is that why it took 30 people to make the album she's now released for a 3rd time. Let's get real for just a minute shall we?

  31. Is this profile a joke? You're being much too generous including her among other greats on this website.

  32. Her voice is very light and what's weird is that if she practiced enough, she can actually "sing." Her voice can become very emotional at times and her chest voice is very stiff and bright, which I like. Nice profile! Oh, could you do a vocal range on Dionne Warwick? Her F#5 and Eb5 are beyond amazing! In one of her 1990's performance at a church she sustained a killing G5!! Her voice sounds just like Whitney's.

  33. She defenitely ain't a contralto.... And she has a mezzo-soprano range.....In my book, a mezzo soprano sings from A3-A5 classically, a soprano sings from C4-C6 classically, and a contralto sings from E3-E5 classically.....those are more like tessituras and not ranges......As of now, I think a lyric mezzo with a comfortable lower range is what she is.

  34. It's obvious that you don't agree so I'll just agree to disagree. :)

  35. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xGq2W3wDyro I know this is not an accurate range to a lot of people but I think it's quite accurate I don't think her range in longer then this.

  36. This profile describes her voice perfectly. She can sing, and rather aptly. Although she's not considered a singer per say she has shown some ability. Her voice is light and seems to work best within a given range. She can't reach the high notes before it becomes too breathy and she can't reach the low notes without it becoming too nasally. However her mid range is very, very good.

  37. i agree, as i said that of a contralto. there are many forms of contraltos, the highest of which can match a mezzo soprano in both range and texture of the voice. the ranges for these two tend to be interchangeable at the middle sets for this reason.

    ReplyDelete
  38. What song are you talking about?

    ReplyDelete
  39. She's definitely not a contralto. She can make herself sound like a man but not when she's singing.

  40. That B♭5 is an exclamation.

I'm not saying this in any type of shady way. I would actually love to here her sing a capella without auto tune. I find her voice quite interesting.

    ReplyDelete
  42. Agreed. Her natural singing voice isn't that of a contralto.

  43. Really? lol
