Vocal Type: Mezzo Soprano
Vocal Range: 3 Octaves 1 note and a semitone (C#3-E6)
Whistle Register: No
Vocal Pluses: Ke$ha employs a talk/singing/rapping style for the most part of her music. The voice generally is used in its midrange and is characterful and able to effectively communicate the mood and tone of the lyrics. Her skill in manipulating her delivery allows for Ke$ha to project a variety of different emotions: from obnoxiously bratty [Hear:Blah Blah Blah]; to cool and relaxed [ Hear:VIP]; to soft and melancholy [Hear:Dancing With Tears In My Eyes]. However there is an identifiable marker of nasal placement that runs throughout the range, as well as a characteristic teenage petulance. It is possible for her to somewhat temper this, singing with a timbre that is contrastingly warmer, softer and airier [Hear:Blow (Deconstructed)], but it's not used often.
Ke$ha's belting range is surprisingly wide- starting at a B4 and extending up to an F#5, [Hear: Dirty Love]. The quality of the notes produced here are bright and piercing but thin and somewhat biting. The tone, timbre and texture of the notes is consistent right through from the lower belting range to the higher notes. An unusual feat when contrasted with most singers, who find their belted notes thinning and changing in quality the higher they sing. Still, Kesha doesn't sound to be carrying any tension in her voice, even up at the top, which suggests a good technique and the possibility that she can go above what has been shown. She is also able to sing for sustained periods in this part of her range without issue [Hear: Supernatural (Deconstructed) or the held F5 in Crazy Kids/ E5 in C'Mon ]
Vocal Negatives:Ke$ha's use of autotune has led many to question whether her ability to sing is pure fabrication, rather than due to a stylistic choice.
You should add the high notes from goodbye and from I'm the one :)
ReplyDelete@ anon, I found a video that has some higher and lower notes! Enough to in fact push her into the 3 Octaves category!
ReplyDeleteI've hear that she can well go into 3 octaves and much more and that she has actual control of her voice. She knows what her strengths are and presents that, but knows her weaknesses and practices beofre she presents them. I like that.
ReplyDeleteContralto?? She doesn't even sing, just talk, lol.
ReplyDelete3 octaves? HAHA OMG LOL U CAN'T BE SERIOUS.
ReplyDeleteI agree. Most of her notes are completly modified with computer programs, that is clear as crystal. No way she has that range, it's impossible.
ReplyDeleteLol haters r mad
ReplyDeleteHonestly Kesha is a very capable singer. However her generic sing/rap/talk style and image overshadow this and much criticism comes along with it. She has proved herself live on several occasions though and I've heard she will be making a rock inspired album soon so I hope she uses less autotune and more of her natural voice.
ReplyDeleteKe$ha is one of those few artists that can be called an actual ARTIST with their music. She is a fun writer and her musical style is very much different from anything else i've ever heard. Her newer more colorful image is also very eye catching and her music is very fun and is not meant to be taken seriously (minus maybe a few songs). She is a very capable singer and im totally stoked for her new album.
ReplyDeleteI am definitely a fan, and am really looking forward to new material! Music doesn't always have to be deep and heavy to be affecting or important- though songs like "The Harold Song" shows she is capable of more weightier material when she wants.
ReplyDeleteI think people are unduly unfair and snobbish about Ke$ha. She uses auto-tune because it suits the electro sound she created on her album, but there are plenty of demos she recorded before she became famous that clearly show she can sing. See this post for one of the songs [http://www.divadevotee.com/2011/03/keha-cant-sing-listen-to-keha-singing.html ].
ReplyDeleteWill her songs be sung in 10 years, probably not, but it doesn't take away from the fact that they serve their purpose as being great pop records.
Besides she offers a really nice contrast to artists out there that take themselves a little too seriously.
I hope Ke$ha eonni can sing so real as who she is.
ReplyDeleteShe can't sing and she hasn't show any signs of her vocal capability, her writing is on par with 14 year old with a rhyming dictionary, her image is sleazy and regurgitated, it's hard to believe you actually wrote that.
ReplyDeleteOn the contrary she is a very capable singer. She has done many recordings and songs that show her true talent. Her writing to you may be substandard but no one can deny the natural talent she possesses.

I have a lot of time for Ke$ha and I am bored of people slating her saying she cannot sing ect. She most def can and not only that she can emote a song perfectly well, check out the links right here for proof.
ReplyDeleteNot only that she is a fantastic writer and producer who always goes out of her way to entertain her fans, so what if she is a little trashy, rude or obnoxious? It's all a front anyway, she is a wee teddy bear inside just needing some of our love guys ;-)
She's a mezzo-soprano.
ReplyDeletekesha is a decent singer but i am still baffled with what she has done with her career
ReplyDeletesince her voice is mostly drowned out with autotune, the general public thinks she cant sing and we cant really blame them
additionally shes a bad songwriter and her lyrics sometimes dont make sense or are about dinosaurs
CONTRALTO ? she's a soubrette !!!!!!! u----------u ;;
ReplyDeletei agree the auto tune crap needs to end. her voice is actually really good, she just needs to actually present it. instead of altering it to the point of almost not existing.
ReplyDeleteKesha is actually a fantastic singer! Just the autotune crap...no she's definetely not a contralto ...she's probably more of a soubrette or even mezzo ..but I think she's a soubrette
ReplyDeleteDefinitely a soubrette
ReplyDeletehave you heard her bob dylan cover? ah-may-zingg!
ReplyDelete... soubrette *-----*
ReplyDeleteShe was originally a pop/indie-esque artist. Check her prior-Sony music up before you judge. The girl can sing...and it's a shame she doesn't.
ReplyDeleteKe$ha can't be a Contralto. Her voice is thin and sounds like as if she was shrilling.
ReplyDeleteI came on here to research vocal ranges and I see that Kesha + Britney have vocal ranges which span 3 octaves and Florence Welch, Adele, and Gaga have vocal ranges that aren't that large. Is this actually true because if it is then I'm very surprised.
ReplyDeleteHaving a large vocal range doesn't, in any way, make you a good singer.
ReplyDeleteThat's true, but I still find it hard to believe that ke$ha's is that large
ReplyDeleteEb#6???? Eb6 or E#6?
ReplyDeleteLol no such thing as E#6...I think dd meant Eb6
ReplyDeleteBUAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAAA!!!! What a load of horse shit. I just can't. Hahaha!!!
ReplyDeleteYou can talk, too, dear. Right? Why don't we listen to you? Singin' is not just about have a voice like Xtina, Beyonce etc... I listen to these singers too but Ke$ha's voice is makin' me feel fun, happy, alive. Before you decided to make a comment, think about that, there are a lot of people(fan) who want to listen to them. You don't have to like or listen to them. But you have to show your respect. ^^
ReplyDeleteso hard to believe she has a wider vocal range than katy perr who can actually sing GET REAL PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm going to say something that has been said by myself and others countless times on here. Range DOES NOT equate to being a good singer. It is how you use it that matters not how much you have to use. There are plenty of singers out there who posses large ranges but aren't anything special vocally. Most singers have 2.5-3 octaves, it shouldn't come as a surprise or massive feat if a singer shows this amount.
ReplyDeletePleaaase update kesha's vocal range :333 she have a new album now without Autotune and the Deconstructed (Acoustic) EP
ReplyDeleteHey DD and the DD crew, did you guys ever buy Warrior?
ReplyDeleteI just bought it yesterday after hearing a couple of songs on youtube and falling in love with them. I have to say out of all of today's pop stars Ke$ha is growing to be one of my favorites. I love how her music is just straight up fun, to the party fare and very catchy! Despite the use of autotune you can tell she has a rather impressive set of pipes, particularly on her song with Iggy Pop and the divine Wonderland. Also there is no attempt to be a revolutionary social figure who is out to give herself credit for liberating certain groups of people, even although she supports many a good cause and speaks up for folks such as the gay community. I really do love it, and a lot more than I thought I would. Not that I should be surprised as I loved her debut and Cannibal!

ReplyDeleteI think thats her best live performances and shows off some range. And she actually sustained her notes. When blow started, those notes and the way she emphasizes her voice with that "twang" and punch of hers is kinda hard moving. She usually sucks at moving and singing
Also, she sings the "you spin my head right roud, right round when you go down, when you go down down" in Flo Rida's song Right around
update this...
ReplyDeletewhere I can hear the proof that she is a contralto.. because for me she sounds so ordinary mezzo-soprano.
ReplyDeleteHmm, DD, Warrior has been out for a few months now, and you've definitely shown a lot more love for good ol' Ke$ha since you made this profile. Maybe it's time for a revamp?
ReplyDeleteThe Dinosaur song is a funny history. Did you really understood the lyric of this song ?
ReplyDeleteThere's no proof she is because she isn't lol.
ReplyDeleteWell, most of her higher notes are screams or exclamations, which DD sometimes includes and sometimes doesn't for whatever reasons.
ReplyDeleteShe's like the new Britney Spears - has an alright voice but didn't develop it and let the production and hype overshadow what talent she had (which imo, isn't a lot but I've heard her acoustic stuff and she isn't that bad)
ReplyDeleteAnother great update! What other ones have you been beavering away at DD? This is great!
